Title: Need a stock for a long action savage, cant decide.
Post by: syoungs on June 13, 2018, 08:55:09 AM
Finally getting around to finishing up some projects.
I need a stock to fit a long action savage, and theres a surprisingly limited selection out there!

Gun will be used for hunting, and long range plinking. Its a 111 in 7mm rem right now, going to order the barrel for it in a week or so, going with a varmint contour of some type, from shilen or criterion most likely, undecided on caliber still. (7mm or 30 of some type)

Looking at stock options now, and like the looks of the choate tactical for a budget minded stock, but I'm worried the weight is going to be to much.

I could do another Boyd's pro varmint, but I've got one of those, and would like to mix it up maybe.

Bell and Carlson has a spotter style stock that would work. But I dont think the comb would be high enough for a good cheek weld, and not sure how to rectify that on that particular stock.

I'd like to keep the stock dbm for now, but I'm not opposed to buying a ptg setup right away if it opens my stock options up significantly, budget is about 400$ total right now.

Anyone have any suggestions?!

In the lower cost you really have your options figured out.  Not much in the $150-$300 range.  I have the Boyd’s pro varmint on one of mine and I do like it.  Could also go to one of their thumb holes which I have on another rifle and like that also. Other options out there would be to go to manners or McMillan which both make for savage but if not in stock takes some time to get.

I bought a Stocky's accublock for my 700 that I really like. I'd also look at Redhawk for options too. I believe they're the same family that owns McMillan...

Stockys? They've got B&C and thumbhole laminates with aluminum bedding in stock for like every major rifle.  They ship very quick

Have you looked in the classifieds on other sites?  I know long range hunting has a very active classified section as does accurateshooter.  I'm not a Savage guy so I haven't noticed if there are any new take off Savage stocks for sale but I've bought many new HS Prec. take off stocks from LRH for Rem 700's.

This is my Stocky’s accublock. Mostly I wanted to try this style of stock and didn’t want to dump a bunch of $$ into it in case I don’t like it. We’ll see. It’s currently at Benchmark getting inletted for a DMB bottom metal and they’re going to bed it

Wow that stockys is nice! I love my Boyd's pro varmint, which is very similar to that one. I may end up trying the stockys this time.

I wish those new mcmillians came in a savage model, I think they have themselves a winner there I'd they inlet them for the guns running barrel nuts from the factory!

Thanks for the advice and help so far

Nothing savage, just rem 700's.
Probably should have just started with a 700 and used a remake barrel  :chuckle:

I went with an hs precision pro m24 pst129 and an accurate mag dbm for a direct fit, for my 111. Still awaiting a barrel though.

If not the HS precision stock posted by Yorke then I would just go with a Boyds imo. They have a ton of great stocks for savage LA.
