Title: MA10 Coho?
Post by: Stein on June 28, 2018, 10:50:00 AM
I was thinking about heading down there tomorrow or Saturday, anyone have any reports?

7 opens on Sunday for both coho and chinook I believe, but I haven't ever fished up there and don't know where to start.

Jeff head is on fire for coho. Lots of boats catching 3-5 limits. small green/white hoochies a short distance behind a flasher/dodger are producing. Mooching small herring has also been effective. The fish can be anywhere from the surface to 120' down so use your electronics. Remember kings are closed as there has been a fair amount of bycatch

Action: Opens salmon fishing in Marine Area 10.

Effective Date: Effective 12:01 a.m., Friday, June 1, 2018, through July 15, 2018.

Species affected: Salmon.

Location: Marine Area 10 (Seattle/Bremerton Area).

Reason for action: This emergency rule modifies fisheries listed in the 2017-18 Washington Sportfishing Rules pamphlet to reflect fisheries agreed to during this year's North of Falcon, the annual salmon-season setting process.

Other information: Marine Area 10 opens June 1 for salmon fishing. Through July 15, anglers have a daily limit of two salmon but must release chinook and chum. Anglers should check the 2018-19 Sportfishing Rules pamphlet (effective July 1, 2018-June 30, 2019), for fishery regulations after July 15. The pamphlet will be available mid-June at license dealers and sporting goods stores, as well as online at https://wdfw.wa.gov/fishing/regulations/.

May just do that. Launching from Everett tomorrow....most likely later un the day, drop pots, run down and give it a go. You see a good looking dude with a mans man beard flowing in the wind piloting an 18ft white with gray top north river give a wave and maybe a dilly dilly.  Tight lines.

Looks to be about 20 miles from Everett to Jeff head each way.  Not bad if I can run 35, but not too fun at a bouncy 20.

Anyone hear any Coho reports from farther down in Area 10 as in closer to the line?  May have to go out and make a report.

The run back was fine but I was early and it looked like weather was moving in.  That's a nasty run when the wind is  from the North.

Ran up to Jefferson Head from Manchester mostly just because I had not gone that far north in my skiff.  Windy and probably too long of a run for a 16’ skiff.

Fished for an hour and caught two nice 8-9 pound clipped Blackmouth and then came up to 40’ and quickly caught two three pound Coho.

Would have preferred to keep the Blackmouth but happy with the Coho.  Will try the rips a little farther south from now on.

Dropped pots in Murden Bay and Manchester and did not get a single Dungeness just a bunch of Red Rock Crabs.  Oh well.  It was nice to be out on the water.

Is this still happening?

- I called off this morning's trip due to wind.  If the weather cooperates I'll try again tomorrow.

We went out July 4th for 3 hours.  Hooked 4 landed 3 kept 1.  Seaweed and weather really threw some wrenches in the plans but overall it was still a great experience.

Same here, 20 from the north didn't sound too fun.  If I can rouse the first mate, we'll be out early after dropping pots on the way down.

I hope who ever goes out tomorrow post some updates.  I am not able to go out tomorrow but I am planning on going Monday.  Looks like great weather with little to no wind.  Plan on throwing out some crab pots and heading to Jeff Head and Apple Cove.  I am launching out of Shilshole, I have throwing crab pots just north of there before a few years ago and did ok.  Any help on where might be a good spot to drop pots lauching at Shilshole and fishing Jeff Head area?  Thanks and I hope everyone kills it!!

I'd try up towards the oil docks and south of there.

The Coho are still biting off Jeff Head, quick limits there this morning.  A fair sized fleet was fishing off the oil docks, not sure how they were doing.

I was not pleased to see a dozen crab pots in my "secret" spot.  I guess that's no longer a secret.  And predictably the crabbing was not as good as last week.

I was in that fleet.. easy limits as well we are finding a little bigger fish at around a 100 ft over there. our usual crabbing spots are still doing good for us .

I'm probably headed out tomorrow, but the tides sure make planning more tricky.  It looks like I can do a 8 am launch and back after 1 pm with some crabbing thrown in.

the evening bite has been good, the problem is usually the winds this time of year in the afternoon and early evening. I run a 21 foot hard top arima sea ranger and am not bothered to much by the winds, It can make for a long run in a smaller boat if you are coming from Everett tho

Yeah, the winds can suck in the evening.  On my NOAA app it says off Jeff Head tomorrow evening is going to be 9 mph.  I am thinking that shouldn't be to bad to deal with.  I am launching out of Shilshole

Looks like we'll launch at about 8 am, just in front of the nasty tide at Everett.  Any tips or just find the fleet and do the coho thing?  We're planning on heading straight to Jeff Head and letting them down to 40 and 60 feet and watching the sonar from there.

Steady 9 mph from the north is whitecaps. Doable, just not really comfortable, particularly in a smaller boat. But Friday evening on the water is still better than sitting at home!
