I finally drew a Washington elk tag! Grande ronde archery any bull sept 1-20. Went over there this weekend to check it out, saw a few elk, and a pile of rattlesnakes. Most were in the road right at dark, but almost stepped on one during our hike. Anyone know when those things go to bed for the year!!? Think I should invest in some snake gaiters? I’ve reached out to a few members on here already and they have been extremely helpful. Spent last weekend all on the Joseph creek road, hiking both sides of the road. Do I need to be checking out the Anatone side of the unit as well? Or is my time more well spent around Joseph creek to the east end? Thanks for any tips, it’s gonna be a tough hunt, but should be fun!

Rattlesnakes will be going full bore until mid October. Plan on them being around for your hunt.

:yeah: Out in full force for your hunt. Usually mid to end of October when we stop seeing them as much and they den up.

Hunted the ronde breaks last 2 October’s and have yet to see a rattlesnake

Hunted the first 4 days, saw a few dandies, but they weren’t real fired up yet, some cows didn’t have a bull with them. Had a real big one bedded down opening morning, was waiting for him to make a move when 2 archery deer hunters decided to chase a bear with their bow, and spooked the herd of 100 all the way to Dayton. Headed back over tomorrow morning for the last week of the hunt, should be some action starting to heat up now!
