So I've never hunted Elk. Always wanted to. Mainly a matter of time management - I know deer better, and I have limited time (full time job, 8 kids, year round coaching, etc). So I spend my 5-10 days available for hunting pursuing what I feel most confident in. Deer.
Several years back I had an older buddy who was a Master Hunter and had been into elk hunting for years. He was about to invite me to his Elk Camp, but then his daughter had to go and get married - to a young buck who stole MY SPOT!!! :bash: :bash: :yike: :dunno: Oh well :chuckle:
So I gave up on the dream...
Now that my 11yr old twin daughters just passed hunter's ed, and with my 9 yr old going to take it next year - I'm wondering if there are youth opportunties I can start looking into that will open up some more options - like with the youth deer program. Get the ball rolling now, so that in a few years, we may be able to harvest our family's first elk.
Thoughts? Any advice?

You will need to give up some things , then spend some time in the woods before seasons start to get familiar with where you want to be at 4am opening day , secondly , get used to the idea of owning and practiceing to shoot a bow , you see cuz missle launching at elk has become rediculouse , dangerous and basically PATHETIC imitation of what it used to be , just a bunch of idiots , not all but most , bow hunting is the only way to really feel like your hunting , and not fighting for a parking spot or getting used to moveing pumpkin patches cuz once the sun comes up that's all you will see , little orange spots moveing allllll around you weeeeeeeee !!! Get a bow , up close and personal with the out doors , and you can get a parking spot if you can beat the Christian rock band there , just kidding ,but bow is the way to go in these to many creeps in the woods times we live in and lastly , elk calls don't work ,all they do is attract preditors and scare elk away , these are the words of call champion Wayne Charlton so take that one to heart , he told me all you need is the lost calf call , a very short and suttle mew ,other than that calls can ruin your hunt , anyways that's just my take on this elk thing these days , and I've been pesuing Mr. Majestic for 30 years.
