Title: Custom bases?
Post by: jasnt on September 16, 2018, 06:02:38 PM
I have a 20 moa rail now but still giving up >18 moa
Action is howa 1500LA
Trying to find a 35 moa rail is like finding a needle in a hay stack.
Any help is appreciated

I've got two options for you:

Go full white trash and use some aluminum muffler tape under the rear of your scope rail to bump it up a little bit. Then just bed the front of the scope base to the receiver to make everything line up.

Use Burris signature rings. I've used 20 MOA in the rings on a 40 MOA base to zero a scope at 800 yards so I could dial the 375 BME to 2700 yards.

I think this is true for two piece bases, but I’m not sure it is the case for a one piece rail. I think the distance from the front set of holes to the rear set is slightly different between rem 700 and Howa/Vanguards. I did a bunch of research on bases for Howa’s 6-7 years ago, so my memory may be a little foggy.

I did a little more research into this and it looks like you may have been correct that the long action bases are the same for Rem 700 and Howa/Vanguard.  I wasn't able to find definitive dimensions for the hole spacing for the Howa LA, but I found some that were suggesting that they were the same as the Remington 700 LA.  The short actions are definitely not the same.  The distance from the front set of mounting holes and the rear set of mounting holes are 0.25" different.

Shim just seems more likely to fail to me which steered me away but I don't actually know that.  I believe I gained 11 or 12 MOA by bedding the rear and just tightening the front screw to snug
