Title: Gulp..Gulp...more Creedmoor kool-aid down the hatch
Post by: CaNINE on September 18, 2018, 08:45:37 AM
I've had this empty feeling inside for a while and suddenly realized it's because I'm currently lacking a .243 caliber rifle in my safe.

Now that Lapua is making 6CM head stamped brass I decided to order up a custom barrel in 6CM.  I went with a 26" Shilen Select Match Varmint profile with a 7 twist so I can shoot the heavy 115 grain VLD and DTACs.  Should make for a fun post-hunting season project.  Will mainly use this for targets with occasional longer pokes at whitetail, antelope and yotes.

Anyone have experience with this caliber shooting the 115's?

I’m using 105s in my 6 bungun (creedmoor) thinking my next barrel will be a 7 ya to shoot the 115 tho. How long is the barrel you ordered?

I’m using 6.5 brass necked down since Lapua hadn’t announced the 6 brass when I got it.

I went with a 26".  I'd also like to shoot the 105's too.  Will be interesting to see what velocity I can run them at without the fast twist vaporizing them.   :dunno:

I plan to use H4530, H4831SC or H1000....whatever gives the best precision with the 115's.

One of the guns I started hunting with as a kid was a 6mm Remington re-barreled with a Douglas barrel. I've killed bear, deer, and lots of varmints of all sizes with various .243 bullets. I ended up liking 100 grain bullets the best for all-around use but can see the advantages of a heavier bullet at times.

We started all our kids with a Remington Model 7 in 6mm Remington and I still loan that gun to some youth and adult hunters at times who come hunting with us. I don't know how case capacity of the 6mm compares with the 6CM, but I'm willing to bet no matter if it's a little faster or slower that the 6CM will be a very effective cartridge for small to medium game loaded with .243 bullets.

Mine is a 26 inch 7.75 twist and I was able to get to 3250 at first signs of pressure with 105 bullets. Working my load to be in the 3100 range. I am using imr 4831 for powder and it is giving pretty good fill ratio at 43 grains.

that's because you bought brass before you even ordered your rifle  :chuckle:

I may have jumped the gun a bit. What can I say I know what I want.  :chuckle:
I have confirmed that the loaded neck diameter is the same in Lapua 6 stamped brass and necked down 6.5.

I’m running a 28” 7 twist in 243.  Can run the 105’s at 3100 pretty easily but the 115’s and h1000 shoot so well I tossed the 105’s aside

Where did you pressure out with the 115s?

Thanks exactly the info I’m looking for.  Glad to hear you found a great load with the 115 and H1000.  I’ll start my development with that combo.

I went to the range today  and shot some 105s. This is with 43 grains of imr 4831 and different seating depths. Speed is 3090. Was hoping to be a bit better but may need a different powder to tighten it up a ton. Next time out I’ll play with some different charges.

Sorry if I’m threadjacking.

Good stuff keep it coming...As far as I’m concerned thread jacking is not a thing.

I’d think with a 28 inch tube you could get much more than that with he 105

Yes I’m sure I can.  Not worried about speed tho

Guess this is a good thread to ask this question, I have a 243 wssm sitting in my safe that I was considering re barreling with a faster twist and longer barrel to shoot some of the heavier stuff, is this a dumb idea? I have a ton of brass for it and it seems like components are becoming a lot more available lately than they were in the past

Great idea since you have the brass.  Would definitely recommend the 1:7

The 105gr Nosler 6mm RDF is a wicked bullet in the 6CM chambering, hell on Antelope!

Super accurate. I first played with the chambering in a factory Ruger Predator. The factory Hornady ammo shot extremely well. While the Predators are far from classy, completely utilitarian. I have spent a whole lot more than $379.00 for customs to shoot 1/2 moa or close with hand loads.

These are the first 3 shot and 5 shot groups out of a stock Ruger Predator 6CM with factory ammo.
