Title: Chumming The Beach North of Hoodsport WA
Post by: AL WORRELLS KID on September 19, 2018, 11:33:19 AM
It won't be long before the action starts again.
Here is an excerpt from my fishing diary I just rediscovered.......

November 7th.....Hoodsport Point, North of the Combat lines at Snag City, near the Hatchery.
The Chums were massing just offshore, their backs bobbing in the surf as they rounded the point headed for their birthplace.
Richard and I were fighting Chums (some pushing 20 lbs) both of us standing in waders, fishing from off the beach, watching them fly sideways in their Aerial Displays! (one Dancing Gal shot up 13 times before finally tiring.)

To be honest, catching one of these Toothy "Willy Wannabes" does have its own arm wrenching thrill and you can really work up a sweat, even in November.
As we tried each lure in our Tackle Box, not a bite, cruising by us ignoring our offering's, giving us the cold shoulder.

Then it happened! There hiding deep in my Cooler, still frozen, I spied a bag of our soon to become, "favorite secret weapon."
Frozen Anchovies! Purchased at the last minute on a whim, these little Popsicle sprats ended up saving the day.
Strung up with a needle through the vent and out the mouth, hanging under a Big Bobber with a few split shot, they made for nonstop action!
But alas it wasn't long before I heard my friends despairing cry " OH NO! WE'RE OUT OF ANCHOVIES!"

As quickly as it had started the action was over and we decided to call it a day. Worn out? Yes, but packing home just shy of two Limits of those Old Salty Dogs, destined for the Smoker.

Chums are a lot of fun to catch.

But I'd rather eat the anchovies.

Combat fishing at its best.    I use a hand tied, sparsely, chum candy.

Favorite night there, showed up, not a soul around.  A fresh batch of chromes showed up.   It was unreal.   Word got out and the hordes showed the next day.

Other fun times.....fishing while the natives net your catch

Fishing from a float tube, trying to land one of those rascals

i've done very well with a bobber and jig out there.  haven't fished north of the hatchery in probably 15 years, may have to give it a shot this year.  i always remember the little bay between potlatch state park and the tribal hatchery being good fishing as well, but you can't park on the highway there any more.

BigGoonTuna,
Looks like there might be more Parking now at your Little Bay and a Boat Launch too! (If this is the same Bay you are talking about?)

Great place to fish for Sea-run Cutthroat as well!

nope, that's the potlatch boat launch.  where i'm thinking of is just south of potlatch state park -- about the first glimpse of hood canal you get going north on 101.

AWK - thanks kindly for pointing out the point.
I've been fishing Hoodsport proper since the mid 90's, and never knew about that little spot.
Had a buddy within 500 ft north of the hatchery that had 120 ft of beach front we used to fish from, and have known the past and present the owners of the motel further north (before the point) that have given us us access - all good folks.
It is easy access to your spot from the Skokomish Ramp - immediately north of Potlach near the spillway. Plenty of parking, no launch fees during the week, just don't plan on coming in and onto your trailer if a lower than 2 ft tide. Would have to wait for some water.
Another thing to note - those fishing outside the 'Hoodsport Hatchery Zone' (a 2000 ft strip) will have reduced limits vs inside the HHZ for both Chinook (July/ Sep) and Chum (Oct/Dec).
Tight lines to you all.
