Title: new to GMU 346
Post by: Stuwee31 on September 20, 2018, 07:20:38 PM
Alright first thing is first. I’m not looking for anyone’s honey hole. I’m just looking to see what information you might have about the area. I hunt mostly, well until this year I’ve hunted exclusively west side near satsop, capital peak area.

Every year my old Supply Sgt and I go from orting through the off road trails to cle slum. Or at least we try to. Sometimes we don’t quite make it. But it’s a damn fun journey to say the least. So I was wondering if anyone knew how the deer hunting was in this area? Or if there were a lot of hunters? I have seen a few elk and I elk hunt just north of the area in 336.  I know it’s a 3 point minimum and I am sure there will be some beauties. But I’ve only ever hunted black tail deer and not quite sure what to be expecting different.

Any information would be greatly appreciated. Not sure how the weather will be mid October, but for jeeping in and hunting a few days surviving off the jet boil a few days I think it will be a fun new tradition.

Good luck everyone and thank you in advance

Very few hunters in that area and also very few deer. Look at the harvest report. I think the success rate is around 2%. But it's a great place to camp and go for a hike with your rifle. Just don't count on seeing any deer.

Well went and did some little scouting. Nothing to far off the beaten path just checking maps and trails we’ve noticed. Saw a stud 4x5 and marked a waypoint. Then slowly back tracked to keep the peace. Just wish it had been open already! It’s got me all antsy to get out there now!

Far and few in between. Not saying they're not there, just saying you're gonna work really hard for 1. He might be there today and this afternoon he will be 5 miles from there.

I'd say, the 1s legal buck you see, shoot him because theres a strong chance you wont see another.

Saw a stud 4x5 and marked a waypoint.

GPS coordinates or it didn't happen!   :chuckle:

There are a few good animals around, but generally speaking the population is WAY low (something like half of objective numbers according to the mgmt plan).  Honestly, you got pretty lucky if you spotted a 4x5 in 346.  I hope your luck keeps up!

That said, I'd hunt 346 vs any westside unit any day of the week.  I love the open/mixed country spot-and-stalk.  And 346 is gorgeous country.  Have fun!
