Title: recommended turkey choke for Remington 870 wingmaster
Post by: 71Shovelhead on September 23, 2018, 10:05:49 AM: Are the aftermarket "Turkey chokes" better than the stock OEM Remington chokes? If so what make and model should I look at? Internal or extened ?

The after market turket is normally extended and has a much tighter pattern then a normal full choke. The best thing is go out and pattern you gun. You could have 2 of the same exact guns shooting the same exact ammo and they will pattern differently. Different ammo will pattern differently to. I normal use Remington Nitro 3" 5 shot. This last season I starting using Hevi Shot Blended enviro. 5,6,7 shot. Rolled my tom this spring at 40 yards.

If you like wasting money like me, then you can buy several chokes and loads and get the combo that you feel is the best. Does it make me kill more turkeys? No. However, it is nice to be confident that I can kill a bird at a longer range of need be.

When I take kids and gals out that dont have much experience, I never have them use a turkey choke. Always a plain full choke. They won't be shooting more than 25 yds and a full choke is plenty enough at that range. A turkey choke has too tight of a pattern for the less experienced hunters in my opinion.

This is for my wifes 870. Its hard to try lots of different chokes with different loads without buying them first. Trying to scale back on doing that. I have boxes of stuff I try and dont use. Her gun is new to her so we havent patterned it yet hence the question about aftermarket chokes. Most of the people in our circle dont use remingtons so cant try theirs.

I have made similar kills with my 10 ga 3 1/2 5s. I will put this at the top of my short list for her.

Post by: MtnMuley on September 23, 2018, 03:07:30 PM: If you do decide to go with a specialized turkey choke, I'd recommend Carlson's Longbeard XR paired with either Winchester Longbeard XR 5s or 6s. All of my turkey guns are Remingtons and they all shoot this setup well past 50yds with plenty of pellets in the kill zone. A lot of the other combos I tried were close, but this one always got the win. Only other option would be the super expensive TSS loads. They're awesome and unmatched, but I cant justify spending the money...........yet :chuckle:
