Title: Youth Whitetail in 101
Post by: donimator on October 02, 2018, 10:40:24 AM
My 11 yr old daughter just recently passed her hunter safety class.  Proud dad right here!  I was planning on taking here deer hunting with me in 215/233 this year for the weekend of Oct 20-21.  But after reading the regs closer with the youth hunt options, I see there is an option for any whitetail deer in many of the 100 series units.  Being that the 101 is about an hour away from where my deer camp will be, I am considering hunting there with her for a better chance at getting her first deer considering youth can take any whitetail during that weekend.

Now the dilemma....   I have never been to that area and don't know where to start.   I am on the west side and don't have time to get over there until hunting season.  Kinda late at that point.  I did find on WDFW website about Morning Star Ranch but an unable to find a good phone number to ask for permission.   So I figured I would reach out here and see if anyone has any thoughts or pointers for the 101.  Preferably the western side of the unit closer to hwy 97.   I am not looking for big buck honey holes or secret spots.  Just looking for an area that has a high population of whitetail that would give my daughter an opportunity at her first deer.

Sounds like a good plan. I wouldn't even worry about private land. Just hunt public land along the border of 101 and 204. Maybe try to focus on some of the DNR land that is a little lower in elevation than most of the National Forest. I'm doing the same with my 12 year old daughter, taking her where she might have an opportunity for a whitetail doe. I'm hoping to find a buck for her to shoot but for her first deer a whitetail doe will be just fine. I was lucky and got some private land to hunt in Whitman county, October 15-16, but we'll be on public Saturday/Sunday. Good luck to you and your daughter!

Public lands North Republic, In Area GMU 101 you'll want to hunt NF-700 rd. Right off HWY 20.   It is a Triangular section that is the southern most tip of Storm King.  Between Trout Creek rd (#257) & Sheridan rd (#253), there is a recovery/retreat center on Sheridan rd.  So hunt EAST all the way to trout creek rd.  Trout creek has some private property, so hunt WEST of there. This area is mainly for disabled & youth hunters.  There is a good mix of  whitetails & BIG muleys.   Partner got a 400lb Muley there one year.  We fill our deer tags every year.  On the Sheridan rd side there are more whitetails, the Trout creek side there is both.
I'm not going to be hunting there anymore due to falling out with some of the guys, that's why I'm spilling the beans.  Let me know how you guys do.

Following...no luck with mule deer bucks for us this year. Had the boy on a couple 2pts, never saw any of the legal deer we were watching. So...hope to get him out in one of the areas open for whitetail doe.
