Title: Easy way to field dress a deer- Steven Rinella video
Post by: Scheindogg on October 12, 2018, 10:10:17 AM: Hey guys I’m still pretty new to hunting- I plan on getting my first buck this year and have never field dressed an animal. I stumbled upon this video on YouTube and figured I’d share it on here for other hunters looking for a simple way to field dress a deer who have never done it before-
Or maybe just a new way for those who have done it a different way?

Regardless Rinella is awesome and I like his detail in this video

Post by: Stein on October 12, 2018, 10:27:11 AM: I actually just watched that as I am hunting an area where dragging it out whole may not be an option. The only thing I don't like about that method is opening up the pelvis, if you drag it around like that you will get dirt and hair in there.

Post by: yakimanoob on October 12, 2018, 02:52:45 PM: Solid video; I've learned a bunch from Rinella's videos (and mostly the meateater podcast). You'll get lots of opinions on various styles of field dressing (this is the interweb, after all :chuckle:) but he certainly did a great job of this style. Particularly, he did a good job of showing how to use the knife in such a way as to not get tons of hair pieces on the meat, which is very important. He also did a great job of showing how to cut around the anus (note he left a little skin around the ring) and how to remove the urethra without spilling urine.

That said, you don't actually need to saw through the pelvis or rib cage, even if you are removing the guts. There's also the other style of field dressing, the gutless method, that a lot of folks do and Newberg has a good video of it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nbnp82DWMCE (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nbnp82DWMCE).

If you do the gutless thing but still want the heart and liver, it's quite easy to break a couple ribs at the sternum, and lift up to access the heart.
