Title: Slowhand's 2018 hunting season
Post by: slowhand on October 12, 2018, 12:22:02 PM
Well, I'm at works staring at the clock waiting for 2:00 to roll around so I can head on out and up to the hills.
Figured I would start this and update it as each day comes and goes. Kind of like a diary of this season and what not.
Super excited to have My middle Son hunting with Me this year. He has been before but never with the gun in his hands. We both pulled doe tags so I figure its a sure thing.
Fingers crossed. :)
Also have a good friend that will be in camp for his second year. He was a complete Rookie last year.
He has decides to bring along His own rookie to show the ropes to. Should be a great time in the woods.

10/13/18
Morning hunt
Up at 4am as planned
Managed to get all the guys up, moving, and out the door by 5am.
My Son Carson and I together in My SuperDuty, Immanuel and His friend Randall headed out in the Jeep.
I opted to go to a large clearing I had seen during scouting.
Waited in the truck till just before shooting light, then off We went. Started hunting mode as soon as We got behind the gate. I’ve been burned by the Deer standing 50 yards beyond the truck before. Won’t ever fool Me with that one again.
Worked the large clear cut from the bottom logging road. Slow walk and glass all along the bottom edge to the top. No Deer :(
Took the trail at the end up to the peak of the hill and slow walked the trail that runs
Along the top of the clear cut. No Deer :(
A few tracks here and there but no significant signs.
Walked and picked apart every visible portion of the two short spur roads. No Deer :(
Hunted each step We made behind that Yellow gate. Returned to the truck at 11am for lunch break
Our lunches Were made at home and bagged up for easy mornings
Peanut butter and Jelly
Handful of almonds
Fruit pie
Fruit roll up
Pretzels
Granola bar
I’m open to suggestions and input

Ran back to camp for bathroom and restock pop/water
Ready to head out for afternoon hunt?
Found the kid back in his bed.
Told him He can sleep if He want but that I’m going hunting. These Doe tags aren’t going to fill themselves.
He decided to get up and hunt.
He slept in the passenger seat on the way. Lol
Continue story time later.....

Afternoon Hunt 10/13/18
Decided to go to the second gate after the pond. It's always been a popular gate in the mornings but not so in the afternoon or evening. I figured all the guys that had gone in this morning would be coming out, maybe I can pickup some intel from them as they leave.
I pulled up to see two trucks still sitting in the parking area. A green 2000s Chev ext cab and a newer Subaru legacy. As We were loading our gear and shouldering our rifles Jed and Emit our camp spot neighbors pulled up in their Red F150. "Any luck yet Carson" they asked My Son. "Haven't seen a Deer Yet" Carson replied
They both had shown genuine excitement at the fact Carson and I had Doe tags. They said they had yet to see a Deer as well. I suspected they had not left the seats of that truck other than to take a pee at some point this morning, LOL. That's ok I'm sure that will be My mode of hunting at some point in My life so I don't judge others and their way of doing things. "keep at it, We are counting on You Carson" They said as they pulled away.
Good old guys with a great attitude. Happy to have them Camping next door to us.
As We walked to the gate the Guy loading up his gear in the green Chev truck asked us if We had seen anything.
I suspect the suspense was killing Him after watching us talk to Jed and Emit for 5 min or so. LOL
We Talked to Him for a few and swapped info, which wasn't much help as He had yet to see a Deer also.
He said that the loggers had been working behind the gate this week and the equipment was back in there.
He said they have been thinning the brush and trees. " You can see way back in there now"
My first thought was, I wonder if the Deer will feel comfortable in that, and have they been pushed out of the area with all that activity?
Continue later.............
