Title: First Deer for a New Hunter
Post by: lokidog on October 21, 2018, 08:57:21 AM
Says it all, got my friend's daughter on one yesterday.

Friday evening, we got out to the blind late, a buck in the driveway on the way in. She didn't want to go after him, that way. Good for her.  Walked down to the blind, dang, at least three bucks and a couple of does out in the meadow nearby, they are right in line with the owner's house....  :(  They take off.  We sit in the blind for the last 45 minutes of shooting time and nothing.  Lots of deer got her excited at least.  Checking the camera on the blind, nine minutes before we got there there was a buck in front of it and thirty minutes earlier another one....

Dad was closer to my place using his bow and had a little tiny spike under his tree stand for a while, first time ever in a tree stand,  think he liked it.   :chuckle:

Hunted Saturday morning, the usual route I take the newbies on and... not a single deer was seen! That was a first.

Put dad in another blind where my son has taken a couple of deer, he saw nothing, bummer for him. His daughter and I, on the other hand, decided to walk the long driveway in to her blind since we had seen the buck in the road the day before. Walking quietly, I spotted a deer under a pear tree, head down in the brush. She was willing to take a doe so we moved farther on the driveway to try to see more of its body.  Then it raised its head, Buck!, cool. I had a shooting stick with me so we got her set up on it, I thought I started the video on my camera, but that was not to be.  :( Now we waited, hoping he would move so she could see more than the top of his back and neck. He had no clue we were standing there 30 yards away. He was munching away and would be out of site for hours at a time, well, it seemed that way.... he moved into heavier brush and I thought he was leaving, but then turned back. As he exposed his side to us I'm whispering shoot, shoot, but she had a hard time getting on him with the 3x scope. He then turned away from us and I again thought we were done, but he turned back to the right and Boom! We watched him run and went behind a tree, I saw him turn and then feet flailing so knew he was down. Thank goodness he did not make it to the Rose Jungle that pretty much surrounded us.

Thank goodness we saw him drop as there was no blood for the first 30' and then very little after that, though a few small chunks of liver.  She hit just behind the ribcage, split the liver, creased the heart and punctured one lung, no paunch involved, yay! Slug was recovered in front of off-side shoulder.

Hard to have a much better dinner than deer heart sauteed with onions and chantrelles and fresh caught dungeoness crab.

Dropped her dad off at the same driveway this morning. I decided to check the apples in front of his blind from last night and there stood a buck at 7:35 eight yards in front of it....   :yike:   :chuckle:
