So i have a duck boat, a 14' livingston with remote steering windshield and such. Ive hunted the skagit bay with my buddies in their boats and they have depth sounders/ map plotters. They are fishermen in the boats but I am not. Perhaps the occasional Crabbing trip. What is the best bang for the buck lower tier eletronic to purchase for the boat? The gps plotter has been really useful when finding the deeper part of the channel or the log we tied up to the last time the weather was right.

I have used Lowrance and Humminbird and both worked fine. I think there are many good units on the market now, Lowrance units start at $90 with transducer. You pay more for a better transducer and a larger screen. For crabbing, you just need to know how far to the bottom, so it depends on how big of a screen you want for the mapping features.
This one is $289 and has built in charts.

I would also check offerup and craigslist, many guys upgrade as soon as the new stuff comes out.

You pay for the size of the screen, any name brand will suit your needs, and probably more.
