Title: The birth of a Boondoggle
Post by: yorketransport on November 02, 2018, 08:13:14 PM
As I get closer to having the 270 Boondoggle finished up, I decided that it's time to start forming brass.

Left to right: 375 Ruger for comparison, Ruger basic brass, necked to 375, 338, 308, 270, then trimmed and ready to load.

A dummy round loaded with a 168gr Hammer Hunter seated to feed through an AICS patter mag at 3.670".

It pretty much sums up most of my projects. :chuckle:

This is what happens when you don't have any friends who tell you "no, that's a dumb idea". Instead they come to me and ask for a rimmed cartridge to shoot out of a Butch Searcy falling block action for medium sized African antelope and possibly some weird sheep thing in Tajikistan :chuckle:. To which I answered "What about a 375 H&H Flanged necked down to 7mm and improved?". Isn't that everyone's first thought?

This would be a blast in 6mm with 1:6 , Maybe talk Steve in to turning out some 120’s.

I’m still waiting on Steve and my custom .416’s.👍

Their hunting season just ended, so he promised to get back to work. :chuckle: I need to call them next week about slapping together the rifle for me.

Maybe you should just break down and buy that lathe :chuckle:

I did shoot some 7mm 155gr Hammer Hunters the other day. Launched them up to 3409 FPS and still have room to go. Accuracy was good considering the CRAP 💩 bedding job on the rifle.

I need to sell more T-shirts to pay for it! Or just stop buying or building new guns, but that's just crazy talk. :chuckle:

Just get in there and start chipping it out of there. I'm convinced that no bedding is better than bad bedding.

Could do a few projects for other people to maybe pay for the lathe?

It would prob take more than a few builds.   About 10k for entry level smithing lathe and tooling. Not to mention the losses of learning to do it well.  20k would be nice for a diy’er on side gig setup. But then you’ll want a mill as well......

Absolutely wrecked a deer this year with the 30 cal 166s hammers...one of the hardest impacts I've seen

I thought about that, but because I have an HOA which won't sign off on me running a "manufacturing" business out of my house, I can't get an FFL. I looked into this about a year ago while thinking about manufacturing specialty ammunition. It's a little frustrating. :bash:

There's a gunsmith in Tacoma who's told me every time I go there that I can either buy his entire shop including all the tools, inventory and his complete library for an unbelievably good price. He's also offered to sell me just his lathe and mill along with all the tooling for less than the cost of a new quality lathe. Every time I think about doing it I remind myself that I don't have the time or space to really use the equipment. Plus, the money spent on a lathe would pay for an awful lot of completed projects!

A lot of components as well. Way more fun to just shoot
