I love my Stoeger 3020 (20 guage). I got it brand new for $300 last year. Weighs less than 6 pounds and has been great carrying it around upland hunting.

Never had a problem with my Rem. 1187, although my buddy's. Benelli Super Black Eagle is sweet. I'd steal it from him but he's my friend and I don't want to make him a criminal.

$300 for a good semi might be a bit tough but they are out there. Remington or Mossbergs might be your best bet and yeah check pawn shops in the area.

All the guns listed are good. Before you rush out to find one check the feel and fit, you noted that pump guns "just don't fit or feel right" and I would concur with that. I don't shoot Remington 1100/11-87's because the wrist area doesn't fit me correctly. After 50 or so rounds my hand and wrist are numb and painful (that's me).
Another auto to look for is a Baikal/Rem Spartan, made in Russia not pretty but very functional. Note parts are available from EAA Corp in Florida. I have one that I use on the salt water, after 12 years of hard usage only one part broke. I was able to fix that issues with a wine bottle cork cut in half.      :chuckle:

Cabelas has the Stoeger M3000 on holiday sale for $399.97 after rebate.  It's more than your budget but if you want a new gun you will have a hard time beating that.  If you need to stick to $300, you will need to look in the used market.

Save a bit more to bolster your budget and get something like a used Franchi or used Winchester SX2/SX3, or even a used Beretta Xtrema or A400 if you're lucky.

Saiga 12 with drum mag!

Ive been eyeballing a brownjng a5 personally, that or anything benelli... I used to shoot a sportsman 48 until I had a really bad misfire, dont know if it was an ammo failure or a gun failure but I switched to a side by side and pump shortly after but likw the a5 enough to want one

Don’t go cheap on a semi auto you’ll regret it. Handle a ton of pumps until you find the right one

I would go with pump for home defense. My go to shotguns is Mossbergs.
If you want semi auto look no further and get Mossberg 930.

Why exactly do you want a semi auto?

I mean to each thier own, but a pump is 10x more reliable, costs less and with practice you can shoot just as fast

Maybe into the side of a barn. An auto will have less kick, and while your taking the shotgun down from your face, I'm already putting the bead on the next bird.
But your right an auto is a thoroughbred and not a plow horse, more time for cleaning and more issues. But I wouldn't have it any other way.

I have had a Mossy 500 a Rem 870 and a Win Defender they were all great guns but just didn't fit they didn't point as well as I thought something should years and years ago I had an old Rem 11 it came up to my shoulder great and pointed even better most all the autos I have tried were similar it's main purpose is hunting and busting clays as for home defence well it kind of comes natural to a shotgun doesn't it

Now I look at it like this, would the same people sayin why use a semi shotty for self defense because its unreliable, use an ar15 or semi auto pistol for the same purpose? Qualitt semi autos regardless of firearm type are reliable as hell with the proper maintenance and ammunition. Its up to you if the higher upkeep is worth the faster follow ups versus the dirty manual action reliability

At this point there is more then reliability like 30 rounds in the mag(AR-15) or compact size (handgun), still some people prefer revolvers over semi-auto handguns due to its reliability and fail proof.

IMHO 20 inch barrel goose gun is not the best option for home defense. Mossberg 500 with short barrel loaded with #8 birdshot is best. For semi-auto clays ill go with Mossberg 930 all day. Best two shotguns out the price/quality. See no reason to pay 2 grand for fancy Italian shotgun if 930 will do same for fraction on the cost.

I would never suggest a light bird load for defensive purposes. And a 20 inch gun is just fine for in the house. I said nothing about a 2 grand Italian shotgun. I use both an remington 1100 and a mossberg 590 in my house. Also capacity wasnt in question, manual operation and semi auto operation were and applies to the conversation brought up.

I’ll second the 930 mossberg. Great gun for the $$

For a home defense shotgun the Rem Tac-14 with arm brace makes for a very nice and compact setup.

It cost me more than $300, but I like my Mossberg 930 a lot.
