So lately I've had a fascination with traditional ML and want to get a Good Brown Bess or Civil War period ML. Does anyone else on this forum hunt like the original Mountain men? Also in researching the Brown Bess I found that it was .75 cal and I have found one but it is .70 cal and I cant seem to find any sort of ammunition for this period and caliber. Any advice? Not looking for a modern ML looking for a muzzle loader 1748 era or newer

You will do best by looking on line at traditional ML equipment sales. I've done a lot of business with track of the wolf. I dont have a Bess. I have several trad ML my prize possession is a custom 58 cal Early Virginia Long Rifle. Measure your arms prior to hunting season. The one in which you carry the rifle with most often will be noticeably longer than the other by the end. :tup:

Yeah there are a few here that like traditional guns, myself included.

I’ve hunted with my 1853 3 band Enfield before. Didn’t get anything but it was an adventure. They shoot pretty well there just really long and heavy but it’s certainly doable. If I were to do it again I would get something along the lines of a Zouave or a calvary/artillery carbine (there shorter) and see about added a peep sight (I think a peep sight for a Lyman Great Plains rifle should be close) and a new front sight. The .58 is a not the most popular round so bullet choice is a little limited. But will definitely put the smack down on just about anything within range

I’d like to see the multi tag go south. I think that would get rid of the number of folks that are in the field that aren’t serious muzzleloaders. Then I’d love to see a couple Trad units opened up.

FWIW thats the same thing trad bowhunters say .... 100 yard compound shooters and Xbows sure have had an effect on bow seasons.

I shoot a tradition Kentucky rifle, just bought a 50 cal pistol for a 2nd shot/backup/short range... Wanting to get a flintlocks myself....
Something about traditional guns makes me feel more connected to my grandfathers fathers.... Considering they wrre French Canadian hunters and trappers....
My main firearm for deer/elk is a savage model 99....meaning 1899.... Its what I inherited from my grandfather, but his father was a French fur trader of unknown origin and his mother was Chippewa native from Minnesota....
I feel as if im staying in touch with a lost side of the familly by shooting traditional
