Title: Chainsaw question
Post by: BD1 on December 12, 2018, 12:43:49 PM: So I have a Stihl chainsaw, one size smaller than the Farm Boss. I opened my carry case for it an saw that a bunch of the bar oil had leaked out. It was sitting in the normal position, not on its side. So I refilled it and left it on a board for a few days and it was leaking again. before I bring it in, is there anything I should check? No visible cracks or anything...and it has been not been abused.

I keep a few shop rags in my case and they eventally get oil soaked, just replace them every now and then and the mess is minimal, if you store it long times between use you could just empty the tank before storage. I have a few saws and the worse is the only husky in the mix, no matter what ive done it leaks pretty good, i figure the stihls make it nervous and its just peeing its pants :chuckle:

Nah, the Husky is just marking it's territory to give all the Stihl's fair warning. :chuckle:

As long as you have a good O rings on the caps the oiler won't drip as it's now on the high side.

make sure you have good caps though :chuckle:

Post by: NOCK NOCK on December 12, 2018, 06:45:58 PM: 1. Talk to a Stihl dealer that knows their stuff. There is a fix for excessive oil leakage, don't recall exactly what it is other than something with the oil line they replace (One of my smaller saws has needed this done 2 different times now.)

2. There are actually summer and winter bar oils, wrong one at wrong time of year can cause excessive leaking.

Mine too!! I put a few paper towels down under my saw to soak it up...

What type of oil are you using?

Of course the Husky guys are done cutting all their wood with less power, by the time Stihl owners get done adjusting their carb! :hello: :peep: :stirthepot:

Did you run it recently & have you cleaned out the oil holes & channel in bar?
Like others said, a little dripping out of the oiler hole is normal. I have 3 that do it. If its leaking out of the case, thats not good. A bad seal there, could overheat your saw quick. You can do a vacume test on it to determine a leak.
Arboursite.com has alot of saw gurus. You could ask there too.

I think I may have a bigger issue...forgot to check model but saw that is leaking a fair enough to warrant dropping it by the shop that I bought it at...cool small local shop that's been around for 30+ years. Hope it is something simple. Will post results soon.
