Thought this might be a little fun to post. I'm looking at a new rifle for deer and maybe elk. I've already got the common cartridges covered so I'm looking at something a little different. Factory Savage 110. Nothing custom or too fancy. Mainly for deer but possibly elk too at times. Hunting on the west side where shots can be anywhere from in your face to 600 yards (my personal limit). Options are:
338 Federal
6.5-284 Norma
a second 7mm-08 Rem (already have one)
I'm not reloading yet but will be soon. Norma ammo is expensive compared to the other two so that is a factor until I start hand loading.
Give me your thoughts or tell me how crazy I am for considering these :chuckle:

6.5-284 and start loading sooner!
-
I recommend start reloading now and then get a new rifle when funds recover. I used to reload in a 2’x2’ space. It really dosent take much room. You will be much happier with your current rifle/‘s
-
6.5x284,Lapua brass,140 bergers & retumbo make my savage shoot like a custom.😎
-
I know not on the list, but
.300 Win Mag - Kill anything in North America - Buy ammo most anywhere - From 150gr to 220gr
-
.338 Federal will give you a bigger bullet and more punch when you need it. Diversity!

Two years ago I made the same decision. I went 6.5x284 and it forced me to start reloading. Best choice I ever made reloading is almost as fun as shooting and enhances the experiance. If you go this caliber don't use up your barrel for load development. Keep it simple. Choose a bullet and stick with it 140 berger vld or save a little and go hornady 143 gr. Eldx. Stick with one powder. Retumbo and 4831sc are both great for this caliber. Use lapua brass. I shoot a savage long range hunter and have seen a couple for 600 bucks lately. The new savage rifle look good to. I also rebarrel ed a savage 30.06 into a 6.5x284 got the action from a pawn shop rifle for 200 out the door found a mcmillan used on long range hunting for 220 a heavy barrel 6.5x284 on 24 hr campfire for 200 headspace guages and barrel wrench fun project.

Thanks guys. Both of these cartridges intrigue me. I'll probably end up with both before it's done

find someone with one or both and try them on for size get what you like best. FIRST! :chuckle:

.260 Rem, can use hand loads or factory ammo and be able to leave the man bun at home. ;)

Hey now he isn’t wanting a creedmoor!! The creedmoor is the man bun gun right @bullblaster :sry:
I would agree on the 6.5x284 it is one of my favorite rifles to shoot.

I’d don’t matter if you have a shaved head or not. With a creedmoor your still a manbun kinda guy. :sry:

Haha, thanks. Knew I shouldn't have admitted that :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

If it's any consolation, I have rifles for pretty much all the common hunting cartridges, not just the creedmoor.

with an '06, you can't go wrong

How do you like your 7mm.08? I bought one for my son but would like one for myself.

I personally love that cartridge. Short action, no recoil, performance almost on par with the 270win. I think it is a great deer cartridge. Id opt for something with more power for elk though.

It has to be the 338 Federal. That's one of the most underrated cartridges floating around right now. I love the 358 Win, but the 338 Federal just has more bullet options.
It's time for all the small bore stuff to get pushed back into the target shooting/varmint category. :peep:

Had to vote to see what the outcome was. Thought it might be unanimous! Lol

I can see from the poll results that I'm well respected in the HW community :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

Hey only 17.6% think you're an idiot. That's some pretty solid numbers man :chuckle:

I have been shooting a custom 6 1/2 284 built on a 700 for close to 15 years it has done it all on deer for me. Shots from 30 yards to 623 yards. I also have one in a factory savage 111 Shoots great as well. Between the two rifles my kids (11&13) and i have killed 7 deer with them the last two years. I run 140 vlds in the 700 and 127 lrxs in the savage still both bullets have preformed great. The savage is going to be my sons full time deer gun next year so have a 6.5 wsm being built right now to replace it for me. 6.5/284 gets my vote for sure.

A very practical choice.
