My buddy and I just booked with mills wilderness adventures for a 9 day elk rut hunt in the bob Marshall. So excited to get in an hear some bugling bulls. Anyone hunted with mills before any advice on what we should bring/ be expecting? We're going September 24th through October 2nd.
We are going to be buying wolf tags as well
-
Wow, that will be a memory for a lifetime. Have a great time.
-
@puyallupaul
-
Wolves and Grizzlies a plenty. Some huge black bears also!
-
Thanks. we are super stoked. As much as we would like it to work out where we both tag out, we figure the experience alone is worth it even if we come home empty. Just getting in 20 plus miles on horseback and seeing some amazing country will be the experience of a lifetime.
-
What does a hunt like that go for? PM me if you don't exit to say publicly.
I drove around the Bob this Sept and it looked awesome

$5,300 for the Bob Marshall Wilderness hunt during the rut, and $4,600 during regular season, both are guided hunts. I booked my father and I through Mills Wilderness Adventures for October 5-13.

That should be a great hunt my friend went with them about 15 yrs ago. He was hunting the last camp time frame. That year he said there was a ton of snow. On the way out they had to go thru a pass and had to shovel snow to get thru the pass. I couldn't tell you off the top of my head which camp that was. They didn't end up getting an elk but said the views were spectacular. I saw pics from the China wall and always desired to go there.
-
Great country, you will have a great experience. Manage your expectations for elk, the density is fairly low but everything else makes up for an otc rifle rut hunt.

Best of luck in your “bob” hunt sir.
-
Partial to Montana Safaris. I Packed all over that country. Great wilderness.
-
I've hunted the Bob a few times, you should have a great time. Take lots of pics.
-
lets see some of the pics of your hunt
-
My 2012 hunt with them. 24 miles / 9 hr ride in. First pic is with Tucker. Second is his dad, Ron on left who has been going into that camp for 50 + years.
Ron said mine was the biggest ever taken out of that camp.
Story in Elk Hunter magazine Fall 2013.
Skyvalhunter, they talked about that trip when I was with them. Must have been a PITA to get out.
I did a 2011 summer Chinese Wall trip them. That trip convinced book a hunt the next year.
Years before that I did a RMEF banquet/ Smoke Elser trip along the bottom. Had to see the top someday.
I WOULD NOT leave without seeing the WALL from the top. Not usually a ridge they hunt though. At least it didn't use to be.
You will have a great trip.
-
Holy smokes that looks awesome. Thats a bucket list trip for sure
-
My dad and I hunted with mills about 10 years ago and had a great time. Beautiful ride in and some awesome country. The weather was crazy warm so rut activity was slow but last few days it cooled off and bulls started bugling a bit. I ended up killing a 5x6 the last full day.
If you aren't horse ready, I would try to get some riding in before you go. The first day to main camp is a long haul and can be rough on your legs and butt. I recommend riding for a while then getting off and walking the horses a bit to stretch the legs. On top of everything, have fun and take lots of pics!
-
Wow, get that bull's offspring!
-
beautiful country , be ready to cover ground those bulls will move a long ways when pressured . drop me a pin with where your gonna hunt , i may be able to help a bit .
-
Tucker found mine in a hidee hole.
-
I've always wanted to hunt "The Bob". Can't wait to see your pics and story when you get back! Have fun and be safe!
-
Oh ya hoping for 2 of his offspring should be good and big by now.
Paul and van which weeks were you both there? Im hoping with it being the last week of Sept. We wont have too warm of weather. You got a pic of your bull van?
Coach. It says on the website we'll be hunting around big salmon lake and gladiator mountain to name a few places.
We are both in our early 30s so we figure if the bulls are hunkered in a hiddy hole we're going to ask where the hell hole is and let's go.
September can't come soon enough. Thanks for all the replies just getting more and more excited every day.

We were in there the 2nd hunt. Bugleing just starting.
Gladiator is the mtn in the back ground of the Wall pic.
Ditto on the sore butt. Don't know how they do 32 miles into the Throughofare in WY.
In one day as far as I have read.
-
That is a stud bull Paul, hoping my dad and I can see some bulls that are even remotely close to that guy this year in the Bob, looking forward to the scenery as well. Just hope the bulls are around.

Our total ride was like 28 miles if memory serves. 21 miles the first day then 7 the second. I was sore and didn’t want to get back on the horse the second day but turned out that it felt good and stretched me back out.
-
Van, we passed thru your remote camp on way back to main camp which is downstream past Needles falls.
Jason Phelps was up that way and thinks he heard my shot. He came in from west side I think. Longer ride.
Gladiator is over my shoulder in pic. Bhunter after you tag out and have a couple of hours, 1/4 mile down stream.
Water level should be low and this hole is packed with Bull trout you can see shadows.
-
Is that the same bull as avitar

Sure is pretty in there. That water reminds me of a couple of the baths I took. Woah buddy is that water cold! :yike:

Van,
Thanks for posting the story just getting the blood pumping thinking about hearing the bull coming through the timber bugling and that anticipation. Your braver then me I don't think I'm gonna be taking a dip in that mtn. Water lol Any tips on if the hunting is tough on what to suggest to try? I know were at the mercy of the weather just hoping we hit good. The new moon the week were going should help abit. I thought it was just a day ride in? Is it actually 1.5 days to ride in?
Paul, I like that thought after we tag out  were hoping after we tag out we'll go out an do some howling and try and fill the wolf tags in out pockets. Amy said they have quite a few back in there. Do they have poles in camp if you do have time to fish or do you need to bring your own? As always thanks for the replies and of course more pictures are always appreciated its going to be a long 9 months :chuckle:
-
I assume you are going guided and out of main camp. Bring fly rods.
Guides will know where to go even with wolves in the area. We heard them one night.
Will post summer fish pics later.
-
I hunted with Mill's three years in a row at lost cabin on a combo elk/deer hunt the week of Thanksgiving. Out of those three hunts I came home with 2 6x6 elk and 3 mule deer. Tucker and Amy are class act's, I wouldn't hesitate to go back if I had the opportunity!! Good luck.
-
Wow! Paul, amazing bull. That is amazing country up in there. I did a deer hunt in there with two friends in 2015 (we came in the East Fork south of Hungry Horse). Beautiful country.

The ride in depends on what camp you are going to. When we went, they were using two camps and the first was a bigger camp that was like 21 miles in. I believe it held like 8-12 hunters and then we rode on in farther the next day and there was 4 of us.
As far as the hunt itself, it really depends on weather as well as what the guides have planned for you. The first few days we rode out of camp at first light on horses to get to where they wanted us to hunt. We weren't really big fans of that as we always liked to be to our spots before daybreak. We talked to our guide, who was a first year guy a few years younger than me, and we decided that we were going to go that route. Hopefully your guide has a good game plan for you guys and that you will be able to just follow his lead and get into some action
-
luv2hunt, Did a repeat guy named Bryan from Graham hunt with you ?
He is the one who turned me onto Mills. He got a huge bull in 2011 in that camp.
His buddies gave him crap that mine was just slightly bigger.
-
Paul, we are going guided out of the white river camp. That bull is a stud .thanks
Van. It sounds like they have changed it up then from when you went. Cause they only take 6 hunters now not 8 to 12. Were going to meet them at the sports show in a couple weeks hopefully we'll find out who our guide will be then and then I'll let you guys know maybe you know him from your hunt. That's nice to hear they were receptive to that idea cause we prefer going out before light too. I figure either way whether we tag out or not, itll be a successful trip just being in the beautiful country on horseback.

Hey Brandon, any chance you could ask if they know who our guide will be for the October 5-13th hunt as well since I won't be able to attend? I'd appreciate it man.
-
Luv2hunt,
You got any pics of your bulls?
Thanks again paul we might have to bring our rods for some tagged out down time of course don't know if that's jinx the trip planning on fishing after tagging out :chuckle:
Josh,
Of course I'll ask. Let me know if there's any other questions you'd like me ask. I'll shoot you a PM with my number and if you want I'll send you some of the bull pics from their albums to help the excitement :chuckle:
-
Bhunter
Tried to add scenery pics but too large. You have the right attitude for experience. Enjoy the moment.
Tucker was my guide probably because it was buddy and mines second trip with them. Wall trip 2011.
PM sent

Not the best quality because these are pictures of pictures but here's a picture of one of the bulls I killed and some mule deer our group brought home. The other bull I killed is identical to the one in the picture.
-
Brandon, did you talk to Amy? Tucker was home plowing snow for county. I talked to her about a Scapegoat general hunt.
Tuckers dad, Ron Mills had his new book come out in Dec. You and WAELK should get it and have Ron autograph it when you get there. Possible stories from your camp.
Copenhavers books were great. Stoneydale Press of Stevensville Mont, amazon has it. Support Mont.
Google search I also found a great podcast between Backcounty Hunter and Ron. Dec 10th 2018. I could not find it on their media drop down though.
Book title, Under the Biggest Sky of All.
There is a reason it's call Big Sky Country.
-
you guys make me jealous
nice bulls
sounds like a reasonably priced trip as well
-
Going into Sportsmans show sat. a guy behind me had a winter kill shed he picked up somewhere near Sun River/ Gibson reservoir. Augusta.
His family is still there. He had it prescored at 396. Unreal. Wolves have not gotten all of them.
If any of you are RMEF members and collect the Bugle magazines, the Sept/Oct 2012 issue has a write up from Ron.
Crash Course on the Bob.

Dang!! 396?! Shame it was a winter kill, bet that was a nice rack to look at!
-
Ya, I was trying to mentally judge how much bigger than mine when he told me.
I should have asked him what his width was.
-
My son and I went on a Drop Camp hunt with Mills a couple years ago, it was great.
We did not shoot any elk, unfortunately the weather was unseasonably warm in November.
The mule deer were there and we both scored on decent bucks.
Although we were not guided by Tucker or his crew, we were well taken care of.
The tent was solid, the camp set up neatly and cots etc. in great shape.
They are really nice people who run a first class outfit.
We will be going again in the future.
One suggestion, GET IN SHAPE!!
Tucker will get you on game, but you have to be able to close the distance.
This may require a 1/2 mile trek over steep broken ground to get a shot.
Those elk won't sit around waiting for you.
Best of luck on your trip, it will be a blast.
Rob.
-
NW, were you up stream from main camp in Sept ?
-
Paul,
I am sure it wasn't us.
We were in Augusta the last week and a half of November, 2017 and hunted till the end of the month.
Tucker set us up in a drop camp site along the head of Smith Creek, near Elk Pass.
The weather was unseasonably warm with no elk sighted.
The game checker said there was not much action anywhere during that portion of the season.
Apparently the elk moved down in an early storm and never returned to the higher ground when it got warm.
Thanksgiving night was about 62 degrees (Not a mis-type) if I remember correctly.
As I mentioned earlier, we will be going again, great trip, beautiful; country.
As a side note, I think that I called you for a reference in the spring of 2017.
Thanks for the tips and positive recommendation, Tucker and the Mills are great.
Later,
Rob.
-
Sounds fun. Would like to do a hunt like that. Too bad about the elk.
-
NW, I have 4 of Ron's books coming. Ron tells me he put my pic in it. Didn't know he was.
You should get one and have him autograph it.
-
Hey Sky,
I sent you a PM, but I'm such a novice (See "Idiot") that I may have screwed that up.
Give me a call at (425) 894-3330.
I have some time this evening, (Sunday).
Later,
Rob.
-
@Bhunter253 you guys getting ready for your hunt? Coming up pretty soon, I know my father and I are stoked for ours!
-
Its crazy how fast its coming  wishing I would have done better preparing fitness wise lol kept thinking I got time but work and life got in the way lol soooooo I've talked to amy briefly and she says it shouldn't be an issue but have you been following the fire in the wilderness? Looking at inciweb and cross checking some of the landmarks she talks about it makes me nervous and seems really close to the area we are.... they've gotten over an inch of rain in the last week so its still at 1800 acres but it's making me nervous...

Oh crap, no I haven't been following that wildfire. Being overseas I'm pretty detached from stuff like that haha, but hopefully it doesn't affect your hunt or our hunt, that would be a bummer. I can't remember, but do they refund your hunt if the wildfire affects it?
-
She says its shouldn't affect us...but when I look at the map it looks scary close to me. I have no idea I know they have a item that states they recommend everyone get travel insurance. So I dunno... we didn't get travel insurance so that could suck.... to stay positive though it should be driving more animals towards our area were hunting so it should be like the best year ever with more animals than ever lol
-

Fingers crossed it doesn't affect either of our hunts, can't wait to hear about your guys' hunt and hopefully you both are successful. We didn't purchase the travel insurance either lol roll of the dice I suppose. Good luck to you guys and will be checking back for the story
-
Thanks same to you and your dad  hope we all tag out and have an amazing experience I'm sure it will be though. 33 days till I leave lol..
-
Did you guys get out of there before that snow hit ? Over the top could get bad.
How did it go ?
-
sounds like dream trip
-
Paul,
Ya we were in there with the storm.it wasn't as bad as the eastern slope but we still got probably 2ft , probably around 1 ft at camp... it started to melt decently fast on Monday after the storm. But by that point Tuesday was our last half day of hunting...we didn't get anything...we had one day last Thursday the 26th where we got under 200 yards from like 4 different bulls bulging like crazy... the wind was swirling all day and it dumped rain somehow they never got super aggressive and new to somehow keep that 150 to 200 yard buffer... and you know that timber your lucky to get 50 ft alot of places. There were bulls seen by guys but nothing hit the ground... they didn't even get a bull the first week before us... Amy was saying she couldn't ever remember having a year where through 2 weeks they hadn't gotten 1 bull..... it's been their worst year so far ever.... crazy.... they were thinking that the really wet summer kept things to lush in the timber that it changed up how they acted.. the storm definitely didn't help basically losing almost 3 days of visibility. The pass coming out was pretty bad. It was amazing and that is definitely a first class outfit and you can tell they truly care about everyone's safety and making sure your having a great experience. Amy is an amazing cook. I would love to go back an try to redeem myself in a few years.. hopefully josh the other guy on here has a great hunt and the law of averages help them on their hunt. He's there now for the 3rd hunt. I can say I wish I did a bunch of riding before I went. 24 miles in is no joke lol all in all an animal is just a bonus and I loved every minute of it , sore a## sucking wind hiking those mountains and all .... and I can't wait to be able to go back money wise...
-
For others who may be interested, what was your total budget for this trip if you include food, gas, and the cost of the guiding itself? Any significant tag/license cost?
-
So this is a 9 day hunt. Lose 2 days horse riding in an out. Last day to hunt is half day so total 6.5 days of hunting.
Cost to book was 5350.00
Just elk license was just under 1000
We had a hotel the night before we left an when we came out so total probably 200 to 225 split 2 ways
Food just minimal on the way and home call it 100 bucks
Gas my buddies truck got excellent gas mileage an I believe it was 4 total tanks and that's counting filling back up at home so call it 300 to 350 bucks -
Then we tipped but that's up to the individual on amount.
Not including tip... probably 6700 to 6900
Seems pricey for not getting anything but that's hunting and the experience is worth it...
-
Mills is definately first class operation
-
Montana Safaris has been doing well back there too.
-
Loosing 3 days on visibility is a bummer. That's hunting. Amy is amazing.
Did Tucker show you where I got mine ?
Did you get a book signed by Ron ? See where he lost pack string described in the book ?
Can't beat the trip.
-
Yup that's hunting. Cant control the weather. Specially the wilderness by the divide can change quick in there. I would love to be able to do it every year and would go back with mills when I get the chance.Ron wasn't there and I only saw tucker the first and last night. He was with return clients the whole trip. We stayed at the spike camp half the time... I think when I rebook in the future if they have the same setup I'd ask to stay at cliff creek spike camp the whole time..i liked it up there...Coming out they had the pack string break several times. Mules take off.. Couldn't find all the mules in the morning... we left camp about 730 am they were supposed to be within an hour of us and it was almost 11 when they were finally able to get on there trail...it was after 10 pm when we met them at their place... they had a very long day trying to get out...just never know what can happen .

Above Cliff Creek is where I think Phelps stayed on his trip. He thinks he may have heard my shot.
