Title: Scope for 223
Post by: crowinghen on January 01, 2019, 09:34:23 AM
I need to get a scope for my new 223- want to use it for coyotes and bobcats- Western washington so not too many long distance shot opportunities maybe 200-250 yards would be about the furthest, with about 3 feet being the closest, LOL
I don't know alot about optics. But I have been pretty happy with my Nikon 3-9x40's on my other rifles. But I think I would want something with a little bigger field of view for varmints.
Thanks!

Shepherd Rogue Duel Reticle 6-24x50 on Amazon for $332.49.Lifetime warranty.I broke an early Shepherd and had it repaired twice for no charge  and when they could no longer repair it they sent me a new generation scope worth $900 and I only paid $400 for the first scope back in the late '80's.I have the one with the range finder circles to 1000 yrds and its 6x18.I have made many one shot kills at really long range shots for me at 500 to 700 yrds without taking a rest or shooting sticks. Te he scope is  as bright and clear as Zeiss or swarovski to my old eyes.Their online sales list the Duel Reticle out of stock so I looked on amazon.Check out their scopes.

1x3 Weaver would be my choice if shots were under 200 yards. Keeping both eyes open in close cover is priceless. (Thus 1 power.) I think they are still less than $250 at Midway.

Fullfield II™ Riflescope 2-7x35mm Or you could go with a 1x4.5  1x5 like a leupold I have been using a Burris like this for going on 20 years, never loses zero and has been the demise of hundreds of coyotes. The fullfield line is  affordable and reliable.

CH, take a look at the Sig Sauer Whiskey 3X9 illuminated. Really like the one I put on my .223.

I ran a Leupold Vari-x I 2-7x33 shotgun and muzzleloader scope for a few years on an AR for coyotes. It worked really well for sub 200 yards. The reticle was thicker than I would have liked but other than that it was perfect. That specific model is no longer made, but a 2-7x33 from any of the major big name companies would do well on your .223.

I have run the Vortex Diamondback 1.75-5x32 on my slug gun the past two years.  Price point is right around $175.  Its quick on target for the close shots and still shoots well at 200 yards with the BDC.

Sig whiskey 3 scopes are a solid choice and a good price point.

I have both the Burris MTAC 1-4x24 and the Steiner P4XI 1-4x24. Both with throw levers. Both are good scopes. The Steiner has clearer glass and larger eye relief. Both have great warranties and very good reticles.

I've been shooting coyotes with 1-4x20 Leupolds and have Varix-II, VX-II, VX-1, VX-2 and Freedom 1.5-4 on various coyote guns I'm good from my shoelaces to 300 yards with them.  A couple of V-3 Weavers great little scope.  I'm also a fan of the 1.5x6x40mm scopes and have them on bolt gun from Burris, Alpen, Bausc&Lomb and Sightron with these I'm more than comfortable in open country or the thick stuff.

I don't ever recall being under scoped but on more than one occasion I've lost opertunities by being over scoped.
