I haven't purchased a new gun for many years. I went in to buy a youth 22 and I got put on the delay status at Dicks sporting goods on December 6th. Should I eventually get an official response? Has anyone gone through this? If I get denied, will they tell you why? I am baffled by why it is so difficult to buy a youth 22. Any advice?

.22s are part of the rifles that have a mandatory wait period.
-
your first mistake was you went to Dicks...
-
I've been delayed several times. I have a similar name to someone who's got several felonies so they get "reviewed"

:yeah:
I bought a gun at cabelas once, same thing, bought a couple more locally, no issues. If you know you should get approved don't sweat it
-
Have you called to see if it's been released yet? I'm delayed on every purchase I make. It usually only takes one or two days for the proceed on my purchases.

Isn’t there a time limit? Where if it’s delayed, after so many days of no response they can complete the sale?
-
This is without a concealed carry permit I am assuming?

"If the FFL has not received a final determination from the NICS after three business days have elapsed since the delay response, it is within the FFL’s discretion whether or not to transfer the firearm (if state law permits the transfer). If the FFL transfers the firearm, the FFL must check “no resolution was provided within three business days” on line 21d of the ATF Form 4473."

Sounds like its without a CPL. I used to get delayed all the time due to similar name even when I was an l.e.o. until I got my CPL. Now I don't have that issue. Delays were usually 3 to 5 days. You should call them asap.
-
The information they have me said they the ATF version of who does the reviews has 30 days to respond and not to appeal until after the 30 day window. No, I do not have a carry permit either.
-
A CPL has nothing to do with firearm purchases since it is a state permit and not a federal one. The only thing a CPL will do for you is on a pistol purchase you dont have to wait 10 days. I have a CPL and still get delayed

Dicks is famous for making gun buys difficult. I think they have a policy of waiting for approval and not accepting the "time" limit. Do not buy anything from Dicks! If you did not pay yet just get it somewhere else, cancel Dicks

So does government shut down effect NicS?
-
Can happen anywhere.
My local gun store guy was talking about this the other day. Some checks take days and there is never an explanation from the Feds. My last one was near instant.
-
Screw Dicksn they are funding the anti gun campaign. They bought Big 5 and own Field & Stream.
I refuse to spend my money at anti gun stores.
Costco, 7/11, Panera Bread and a bunch of other businesses San all go to hell.
-
So I've not much experience purchasing guns from stores but I've always gone in and filled out the form and gave them my cpl and shortly thereafter walked out with my new firearm. Is this not how it is for everyone? What's the delay about?

Surprised you didnt mention wal mart and rei. Want to fill me in on the costco thing?

I would go somewhere else if the delay was more than a day or two. CPL doesn’t make buying a long gun easier, just makes it so the ffl can run it since the extra scrutiny has already been done within the last five years.
Bad news is the FBI is ending the courtesy checks on hand gun sales, people with CPL will have to wait like everyone else.

Where did you hear this?

I get delayed every single time. It should only take a day or two. In fact I was put on a delay Saturday and was called today (the store was closed Monday and Tuesday). You get delayed by the feds so it doesn't matter what store it is. I personally would never buy a gun from dicks though...

Lots of mis-information here.
First, the OP did not mention handgun or rifle. Typically, a Youth .22 comes in rifle form. Either way, this should have been settled long ago by either a DENIAL, OPEN, or PROCEED status. I imagine the idiot assigned to enter the NICS checks has never checked the NTN status, or they lost the OP's phone number.
Second, the proposed 10 day wait on semi- autos is not in effect till July.
Third, any decent FFL (which category Dick's clearly does not fit in) would have notified the applicant of any denial. Delays usually flip to OPEN or DENIED after 3 days.
Fourth, the FBI courtesy checks referenced do not end until July.

Just read the same thing in a news paper article about the fbi courtesy checks...
