Title: Ground Rats
Post by: Grizzly95 on March 23, 2009, 11:15:39 PM
I know this is a Washington forum but I want to know about shootin squirels in Montana. My old boss has gottin busted up and can't move with the stealth he once had. He actually doesn't hunt, but shoots about 1000 rounds a week when his back and leg aren't hurtin too bad. I mentioned shootin some rats in Montana and he lit up wanting to know more about it. I have never gone but heard good things about what a great time it is. Anyone with info or who to contact to get info would be helpful. Thanks.

Lots of ground squirrel work in northeast montana. There seems to be lots up near malta. Any good farm up there should be able to produce them.

Here's one of the hundreds I shot last spring. A real good time. More field shooting in a day than most anything else [Graphic Image (http://www.backcountryhunting.net/photo-gallery/albums/userpics/10002/IMG_0332.JPG)]

Was it a spendy trip? I know one would need a license (general hunting license?) but are the ranchers happy to have you or do you pay to hunt land?

I'm pretty sure you dont need a hunting license to hunt p dogs or ground squrriels! I'm not a 100% sure though!

Didn't pay a thing to ranchers or for a license. Most money was on bullets, food, water and gas.

Sweet sassy! Looks like I will be planning a trip! Spring/summer would be the best time I would imagine? Now if I can just get my mits on some .223 ammo.
