Title: Feeding trout to dogs
Post by: Platensek-po on February 14, 2019, 11:25:11 AM
Hey all!!

I fish quite a bit but I really dislike the taste of stocked trout. No one in my fam eats it and in the past I have smoked them and given them to neighbors and friends who don’t fish. They think it’s the best thing ever. Now though I have 2 new pups to feed and have thought about adding stocked trout to their diet. My question is if anyone else does this and how you go about it. In the summer and fall I plan to catch pinks and chum for them as well. I was just going to boil and blend the fish but wondered if anyone has a system that they use. Thanks!

I have given both my labs triploid meat with no issue. I agree that they are only good for smoking so dog food works well too

Head 40 miles west of Westport, put them on a hook, send down 700 ft, and turn them into halibut.   :twocents:

If you cook and pull them off the bones there is no worry.

I turn mine into crab and then have no problem making it go away.

I've been feeding them to my dogs for years. As advised, clean and cook them first; after cleaning, I wrap them in foil and bake in the oven. Upon removal from the oven, I open the foil and pull out the bones. I wait for a cool down and serve with the regular food. I store excess in the frig.

I wonder if you couldn't cook them enough to soften the bones.  I think canning, pickling and pressure cooking do that.  Maybe just pressure cook a bunch?

It'd probably be a disgusting mess though.

Been making my own dog food for years.  I clean and boil the trout then put thru a food processor, bones and all.  Turns into a mush which I add cooked sweet potatoes (not canned), apples, some blueberries, spinach, carrots and a few others all run thru the food processor.  Mix all this with cooked brown rice and freeze in containers.

If I have any old venison that is used instead of fish also chicken livers are a good add.  You can also get some chicken feet and boil them down for the collagen to mix into the food.
