I just wanted to put this poll out to see what people are using most often for their elk hunting bullets. Why you use them would be a bonus.
-
I use 200 and my wife uses 130, which there is no option for.
-
168 because it shot far better than 180 in my rifle.
-
Haven’t hunted elk with a rifle for a few years but when I do again it will be with 215 Berger’s
-
180 in the 7mm
105 in the 6mm
Both Berger VLDs.
-
6mm is not a a legal elk bullet.
THIS HAS ALREADY BEEN SHOWN WRONG THE 6MM BULLET IS ACTUALLY .243 NOT 6MM WHICH IS .236 IN.. SO SKIP THIS.
-
Really?
-
I'm not understanding why 6mm is not a legal elk round. Wouldn't that be like a 243 which would fall in the legal caliber minimum requirements for big game hunting.
-

.24 or larger is legal for elk. 6mm is .243

:yeah:
-
ok i guess the 6mm bullet is bigger than the actual measurement of 6mm.
6mm is .236 in diameter.
-
I'm trying out some sledge hammers in 255 at the moment, that i think i like. Usually i shoot 250 grain partitions.
-
I will broaden the polling for the big boys.
-
162gr for the 7mm
225 for the 338wm
-
I use 200 grain accubonds

.338 200 grain Nosler Ballistic Tips is what I have loaded up right now, but I've also got some 185 grain Barnes TSX that I'll probably load up for this year.
-
I've never shot an elk with a gun but I'd shoot a 139 grain hornaday from my 7mm08. Daughter shot an elk last year with a 120 grain bullet that led to a 40 yard recovery.

Doesn't the Nosler make a mess of the elk? My daughter shoots them in .243 on deer and it sure opens them up - to the point I'm thinking about switching. They are fine if you are dead broadside with good placement, but anything else ends up with a bunch of wasted meat.

I haven't shot an elk with them but going by what John Barsness says, the BT in .338 is a tough bullet that is mostly jacket (copper) with very little lead. I shot a deer and antelope with them and they seemed to hold together just fine.

I used the 180 gr ballistic tips on a good number of elk but also deer, antelope etc. IF it was a longer shot the bullet performed perfectly on close shots it blew s*** up. It had a tendency(at least for me) to blow up and wreak havoc at closer ranges. I liked them because they shot so good out of my rifle but when they came out with the accubond I switched. They shoot just as well out of my gun and have performed amazing for me on about anything you can legally shoot including African game. It was quite a few years ago when I shot ballistic tips so they may have improved but I would highly recommend the accubond as an alternative . I could be wrong but I was thinking the accubond was developed to improve on some issues with the ballistic tip on big game? Anyways, my vote is 180 grain accubond out of 30-378 and 300 win-mag for almost everything including elk :chuckle:
-
I have knocked down a lot of animals (deer, elk, bears) with ballistic tips and they had always been great when I used them. I shot the 7mm 140 grainers at 3250 FPS and the 6mm 95 grain at 3000. Both performed very well. They are a good performing bullet.

I wasnt trying to beat up the bt I agree they are a good bullet. I hunted with them for years and shot everything with them. But I did have issues at closer range (animals usually died quickly but it was a mess) so I switched to accubond and I am glad I did. I think they have performed better at all ranges and size of game.

I wasn’t implying you were beating up on them or anything. Just giving another opinion. I am in agreement with you. :IBCOOL:

Really depends on the caliber using
338 use the 250 gr interlocks or 285 gr tsx
348 use the 200 gr
308 use the 180 gr

Just in case you didn’t know, 6mm is the same as 243 and is legal to hunt with.

 Question BullBlaster,Why would you use the heavies for elk?
long range
energy
less deflection
shoots best in your rifle?
-
I don’t buy elk tags anymore but if I did I’d shoot 250 bergers cause that’s what I shoot

All the above... they are the only bullets that have been shot in my 300 win. I like what they do.
That said there wouldn’t be any issue with lighter bullets, or differently constructed ones.
I’d also really like to get an elk with my 375.

180 Accubond

300 WM with a 200gr Partition

only answer better than this would be anything mad by RAD.

@ magnum_Willys Agreed :yeah: ,There is no replacement for displacement. :chuckle: The retained energy counts.

400 grain Harvester hard cast lead..... Who needs a jacket?
-
200GR BARNES tx out of a 325wsm. They have performed great for me everytime.
-
180 gr Sierra Gameking (#2160) in the 300WM and H&H. The .308 cal 180 and 200 grain Spitzer Boat Tail Gamekings have a tapered jacket for magnum velousities. Today several companies produce tough tapered jacket boat tail bullets with an over .5 ballistic coefficient (g1) but Sierra was doing it half a century ago. $33 per 100. Not all Gamekings have silmlar construction

250gr Nosler Partition in the 35 Whelen. 220gr Speer in the 356 Winchester.

165 gr btsp in Federal Premium or in Federal Fusion shoot best in my .06.

For elk I’m typically using something in the 260-275 range in whatever I’m carrying whether it’s a 338, 375 or one of the handguns.

Was my favorite buck and bear caliber used growing up in the Methow👍
Mine is a older tang safety ruger that I got lucky and it likes them hot. 3188 fps for the 130 bergers has made for some fun longer shots. My Idaho elk last year was 510 yds.

Had 3-m70"s and a ruger #1. All great shooter if using light bullets pushed fast. Today, I would want a longer throat to push the longer bullets.

Very cool,I was thinking of running them.Have you harvested with them yet and if so how well did they perform?
-
This year I got a 5x5 Roosevelt Bull the shot was around 90 yards and just punched him in sweet spot went maybe 30 yards and flopped I tried a bunch of different bullets and powder-pellet combo and these were the most consistent and accurate of all them I bought 10 packs of these and I’ll use them for any big game or coyotes
-
 thanks i will put some down the barrel and see how i do with them.
-
Looking at results, it seems most are midrange in available bullet weights. I thing more due to caliber then to weights. I am more of your "heavy for caliber" types. Glad there was no option in the 90-105 grain options. Conversation would have been interesting.
-
7mm w/ 168 gr Berger
-
A quality bullet in any of the weights mentioned will kill a Elk, as long as the driver iis competent. While I'm not a .257 Weatherby fan, I have watched severel Elk smoked at distance with the chambering. I believe they were shooting some rather light partitions.
-
:yeah: so what grain do you use the most for elk?
