Title: What’s your favorite reel for Halibut and bottom fish?
Post by: robescc on March 05, 2019, 10:38:06 AM
I will be doing some Halibut fishing this year for the first time. I’m looking to get my own rod and reel so I don’t have to use someone else’s. I just went out over the weekend and we got four limits of rock fish and we used halibut gear to fish for those so I’m looking for an all around reel for both types of fish. I would like to stay under $150 if possible but open moving up a little more if I have to. I would also like a counter on the real. Thanks in advance.

I have a couple shimano tekota 800 we use as back ups to the electrics.  There slightly more then your budget but have been great reels.

Where are you fishing and how deep?

I will be fishing out of Newport, Oregon and I believe the depth is 300 to 600 feet.

Oh, in that case my Penn 310 probably isn’t the best choice.  Bring teenagers.

My favorite for 600 feet is an electric.  I don’t halibut fish enough to offer more info. Whatever you get, make sure it is geared to retrieve a lot of line per turn of the handle. Reeling for 5 minutes to check your bait sucks.

I have three 1980's era 4/0 reels (a Penn 113H, and 2 Daiwa Sealine 400H) which would work just fine. Was thinking about putting new line on one of them and using with a Fenwick Pacific Stick 7 foot 670C. However, I've been going out on a 6-pack from La Push (Allways Fishing) and have been using the boats gear. Not sure of actual brand name of gear but it was a level wind, no larger than 4/0 (maybe smaller) and was loaded with 80 lb. synthetic (braided?) line. It was a very good combination. Even at 600 feet depth, you could easily feel the bottom with that line and a weight/jig of approx. 2 lbs. This combo brought up an 87 lb. halibut last June and a limit of lingcod. From 600 feet down, it can be a long slow process bringing up a large halibut but with the above combo of rod, reel and line it is easily accomplished. Don't forget the Smelly Jelly.
