I wish! I tried to sell it into the wife as a good idea but I think my timing was off.  The day i got back from the kodiak goat hunt may have been too soon  :chuckle:

I should be making my 4th consecutive trip up there! Tough place to stop going once you experience it!

:yeah: I used to commercial fish up there but I never really did much exploring on land. Alaska has gotten in my blood now and I'm scheming my way to get back there sooner than later!

That's pretty much why I started this thread. I am looking to get back up there and chase some deer around. As was mentioned once you go there the desire to head back runs deep!!!

I'm not sure why that is either because it's fairly unpleasant roughly 100% of the time lol

What lodge was that you stay at again on that barren ground goat hunt?

So very true I spent 5 days on a sidehill in the wind, snow and rain under a tarp waiting for the wind to change directions so we could go after a bear.

Id go back if I could without a second thought. One of these days I want to stick with the Road System Hunt and see how much cheaper it is. In the past I had a skiff I'd launch from Anton Larsen and motor around to public  beaches to hike from there  (heard of a guy who did it in a kayak once). But I remember quite a few of my friends would ride Saltery to the magic line and kill their limit or would hike off the road system and fill the 3 tags easy.

I’m trying to get a trip together for August of 2020 on POW, something about being trapped on an island with all those brownies doesn’t make me want to do Kodiak, especially when I compare the costs and it seems I can do POW for about 80% of the cost

Not sure about this year but not too far off although POW in August is enticing too.

I'll probably go late september. Try to do a little silver fishing and maybe two deer. Have to see how work goes this summer.

Anyone who goes should do some fishing too while they are there. Fishing even off the road system can be utterly outrageous. Some of the best times of my life so far were on the road system rivers catching reds and silvers! Only have to drive 15 min out of town to get fishing beyond your wildest dreams.

For sure! I have fished with a buddy and caught silvers till our arms were sore.I had a canoe set up so i could stand in it and see the schools. Then i'd slow roll a spinner through them and hold on.

Tagging along on this.  Anybody have any good recommendations for a POW hunt? Thinking DIY out of a lodge/cabin. Been wanting to do this for quite some time.  Getting some fishing in on the same trip would be fun too!

I will say just like Karl mentioned don't let a bucket list be read as a wish list read at your funeral

It's pretty dang easy to do too guys.  It seems intimidating to plan but it's no different than any other hunt.  Get the tags, get there, hunt, and get back.

We used Andrew's Air and flew a Cessna 206.  It was $1,800 round trip.  If we had been heavier we would have taken a beaver which would have been $2,400. So if you have 2-4 guys and keep gear minimal 2,400-3,000 isnt that bad.  Our round trip flights from seatac to kodiak were $525.    Add in the cost of the tags and license and that's about it as far as the big expenses of the trip.

Our pilot said that guys are shooting bigger bucks than ever before.  They had a bad freeze a while back that nuked the deer pretty good but they have bounced back better than ever.

I flew from Kodiak to my guides cabin with Roland with Seahawk Air. There was 2 other hunting groups with me. We dropped them and their gear at a couple of coves. Each had electric fence setups to keep bears away. Which is what my guide had around his cabin. If anyone is interested in a hunt I am game. I was looking at the cannery as they would take you out in the morning and drop you off and pick you up in the evening.

Yeah run a fence and be bear aware along with all the other precautions and a guy will be just fine.

If you can convince my wife I need to have diarrhea of the wallet again I'll go with you :chuckle:  though a trip to kodiak without a goat tag seems far less exciting :'(

I think you are thinking of Raspberry Island, a smaller island that is just to the south of Afognak. There is bears on that island for certain as there is elk. Seen a handful of bears on that island while flying over it.

I'm going to Kodiak in Dec.
The plan is to kill two sitka bucks and go fishing.
Using Sportsmens lodge for lodging ,meals and transport.
Anyone use them or interested in doing the trip?

You'll be getting pretty close to when they start shedding i think depending on when in december you go.

Been tossing around the idea of this for 2020. Saw an outfit that has like a 60' boat that is anchored in the bay that is home base and then a skiff is used to get to land to deer hunt, sea duck hunt or fish. Sounds like a blast

Yea when I started this thread I didn't think I would get much interest. Mostly guys just kicking tires as usual. Turned out like I anticipated.

Couple months ago, after striking out in wyoming, I decided to see if there were any last minute or cancellation hunts available. In my search, I came across the kodiak hunt I mentioned and it sparked my interest. Now I am legitimately looking into it for 2020 as we planned a different hunt for this year.

But I remember quite a few of my friends would ride Saltery to the magic line and kill their limit or would hike off the road system and fill the 3 tags easy.

Back in the 80s when I lived in Kodiak, the boundary for the road system used to be different than it is now.  It used to run from the mouth of Saltery Creek to Crag Point and it was possible to hike in to the multiple deer area from just above the Anton Larsen boat launch. But a couple people who live in Anton Larsen bay complained about people riding quads into "their" hunting area so the line was changed to from the mouth of Saltery Creek to the creek at the head of Sharatine Bay. This effectively made the whole northeast part of Kizhuyak Bay/Sharatin Bay part of the road system.  Back in the day, it was nice to have an area you could get off the "road system" on foot with out boats or ATVs.  Technically you still can if you ride out to Saltery cove and hike across Saltery Creek. But it's a long walk over to the hills.

I also used to kayak from Anton Larsen Bay to Sharatine Bay to deer hunt.

This is a sweet thread. Kodiak looks epic, especially for deer.
