Idaho bird down
Nice job! I was out in the downpour Saturday checking on my little pocket of birds. Silent but there, wont get back until saturday.
Congrats!
-
Great bird!
-
Just a jake
-
Tough day for me. Had a lone bird in the roost but he would not fly down. Almost 645 finally we moved on him and he flew when he seen us i think. Maybe he seen us set up not sure. Otherwise not a single reaponse to any calls

First bird I shock gobbled at about 5:45 looked around for a good place to set up since I knew it was going to be a while before he flew down. Sat for about 30-40 minutes before I called him. He gobbled again in the roost 20 yards away :chuckle: he probably watched me walk around looking for a good spot thinking “look at this idiot”. Needless to say when he flew down it was away and he hit the ground running lol. Then I found the bird above with 2 other jakes.

Had another Tom hang up at 75 yards right off the bat, so once I got this guy working he passed my 50 yard tree and I let him have it.

Congrats to all the successful hunters out there. Save some for us May hunters!
-
Good looking birds so far! Congrats to everyone and good luck to the others! Beautiful morning this morning and plenty of Toms but I’m hunting the high mountain snow birds I’ve been finding. These were out the window though.
-
Roosted a few the night before. 7 year old was along for the hunt. We set up the ground blind and we were in it by 5am. About 15 minutes after shooting light, this fella came to a little hen calling my boy was doing. After the shot the bird rolled down the hill and out of sight.
We gathered our stuff and gave the bird a couple minutes before trying to find it. I knew it was a good head shot and couldn't have gone far. The hill we were on was very steep and brushy. My some located the bird about 80 yards down. He was a little excited to say the least. I thought it was a stump, he knew it was the bird.
First double bearded bird. One was 9.5 inches, one was 7.5. Guess I have to get my second tag now.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190416/e5b30b0c2c01ddc9f6a1c5579a268735.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190416/11531419811620087c56d356f113b15d.jpg)

Alot of really nice birds! I ended up not getting one but had a heck of a great time. Ended up finding two Tom's but could not close the distance between me and them they were all henned up and I couldn't get any closer than 65 yards from them.
-
Nice birds!!!
-
Just a jake but pretty happy I was able to call it into 10 yards with a mouth call
-
My sons first bird came on the first morning of his youth hunt. The first year we hunted a weekend due to work and he needing to pass hunters Ed. The next year we got his sister into chasing thunder chickens.. had a few close calls. No bang flops. So this year had a different plan of attack.. on opening morning it was a wet mess.. didn’t hear any. We waited it out as long as possible.. went for a drive to if any where out strutting. Came around a corner and 2 jakes seen us same time we seen them. I stopped the boy (12) jumps out grabs his shotgun and a couple shells and try’s to sneak up on them.. ( I knew they aren’t easy to run down) he didn’t see them again. We then went to a area we could get cell service. Noticed that the rain would stop around lunch time.. made a plan to go back to camp make lunch and then find a nice spot and set up near the Jake crossing... as soon as we got out of truck heard a gobble on the other side of the road.. plan (B) high stepped it near the gobble. Set out the decoys and setup the blind. Heard a hen yelping and the Tom.. told my boy that we need to be patient that he was busy with his friend but as soon as she leaves he will come find us.. not more then 6 mins later here comes the 2 jakes sneaking in to my 1/2 strut Jake.. starting trouble.. they bumped into it and pushed it around.. he kept his cool and asked if he could shoot one of them.. I seen both had beards and told him to let fly if one gives him a shot.. a minute later bang flop and a smile from ear to ear.. made my season.. will post a pic when I get some on my iPad..proud dad...

Sounds like a great experience, I'd love to hear how it went down if you'd like to share! I also had my first turkey hunting experience and while I didn't get anything, it was a blast!
-
Lots of birds around this year. I've been haunted by the Jake's this season. I cant set up on a gobble without a Jake or two showing up :bash: hopefully some butts will get kicked and they will learn to keep their mouths shut :chuckle:
Dan has been my bad luck schlup for 5 trips over 3 seasons and easily 80 miles of boot leather (19 this weekend alone). Finally got the monkey off his back on sunday! Mature bird and 5 Jake's right into the gun. Mature bird was in the lead with all his minions close behind. Had to pick up and move once but the second set put us where he wanted us to be and came in on a string. Fan'd down to blow our hats off with a thunderous gobble and Dan let him have it! Best part of taking people Turkey hunting is you get to call them in and watch the show, but at the end they get to carry the stinky dead turkey :chuckle:
-
Proud daddy moment. There was at least one bigger Tom with the group but with a squirmy 4 year old with me, I took the first shot I could on this jake.
-
Y'all got some beautiful birds! Did anyone cook one for Easter dinner?
-
Merriam and Rio to wrap up another mini slam.
-
4/15 & 4/17 Toms. Another great hunt!
-
I not only use the feathers to fletch arrows and bones to build wingbone calls, I go kill a few gobblers as well. Got this Oregon tom last Friday. :IBCOOL:

Well I think I shot the last Rio on SE public. :P
Pretty slim pickings but lucked out. I normally do NE but was on vacation with the family in Walla Walla/Pendleton.
Talked to a guy who owns a vineyard who said he has about a dozen that hang out by his truck >:( Of course I wasn't able to hunt them. I even offered to buy a case of wine.....seriously.
-
We ended up with one each this trip. Hens were being a pain.
-
Cle Elum private ground bird my brother and buddy called in this AM.
Love the white tips on those Merriams! That's my goal right there!

Some awesome birds guys!! Some even better MEMORIES!!! Keep the pics coming!!!

Got one this morning
Central Wa

Nice!
-
Turkey down first day out. Called in two toms on a string with no hens. Between what I found out in the field, in my truck, and in the dryer had about 12 ticks crawling on me. They are out thick this spring!

Yeah you're not kidding. I was picking them off me daily and then had one crawling around on my neck on the drive home. Gross. And that was following *all* the precautions....
(Well, aside from not monkeying around in the underbrush like a moron - I didn't follow that one...)
-
Tagged out for the year and done in time to be in early to work. Ditto on the ticks!
-
I run Permathin from Sawyers and have not seen a tick the last 2 years, I use a bug suit over my clothes and that gets sprayed judiciously along with my vest. I also run elimitick shirt, head cover and socks. I hate ticks with a passion.

Tried Sawyers for this first time this year and didn't see a tick on me.

Ticks gotta eat, same as the worms.

Great bird Clint. Any bird from Central Wa is a great bird!
-
First four are Washington, the fifth bird was Oregon. All I can show a picture of is a shell for my Oregon bird :chuckle:
-
Bagged this nice tom off the roost on the 24th. Just shy of 19 lbs, 8" beard, 1 1/4" spurs. He was roosted with another tom and a hen. I watched him push the other tom around and do some spit and drum at the hen and my hen decoy. Almost didn't get a shot because he wouldn't stop strutting. Got punked out by another group of birds the rest of the week. Not much gobbling off the roost this month. Plenty of birds left for May hunters.

Been a long time since I tagged a true westside eastern. Forgot the tripod which made rushing for solo/self pictures a bit of a challenge before I lost daylight. One short series of yelps from a Phelps Black Bat led to an 18 yard shot that put him down in his tracks.

All in all, it was a great time with family and friends. Lots of good time and 17 Tom's in 4 days. Plus my 3 year old daughter caught her first fish, absolutely priceless! I hope all are having fun and enjoying the season! It's fun seeing everyone's success and reading the stories. Good luck and God bless!!!
-
My girlfriend just started hunting last year, and this is her first kill besides grouse. I'm definitely proud of her, and it was an awesome experience being there when she took her first turkey.

Awesome birds everyone. I’m heading back over soon. Would like to drop the hammer on one more this year.

Harleyboss, is your double choked mod & full, and is it a 2-3/4" chamber? I have an old Elsie 16ga choked Imp. cyl & mod, and two old Nickel Steel Model 12's in 16ga. The 12's are choked full and the other light mod. A few years ago I took a Rio at about 20-25 yards with high brass 6's with the 1917 Model 12, which has the old 2-9/16" chamber. I used RST shells for it. I'd love to hunt with the other two guns because they are 2-3/4" chambers, but I'm a little concerned about them not being choked full, although I have to admit I have not patterned them. This spring season, though, is dedicated to my recently acquired Model 97 12 gauge, which was built in 1914. Oncve I have a turkey under it's belt I will probably shift back to my 16 gauge guns. Sorry, all over the map there.....
-
Some great birds coming in folks - congratulations! I'm stuck at work until next week then it's NE corner bound for some runnin' and gunnin'!!
-
My crack of dawn selfie. Finally getting these turkeys figured out. Took years of scouting and bs'ing but now consistently am getting merriams to the call on public ground. I'll soon ruin that when i try for Rios or easterns.
-
Got it done yesterday afternoon with my bow at 40 yards.
One inch spurs, ten inch beard, 23 lbs.
This is my sixteenth turkey and 3rd with a bow.
-
My two from opening day both 9 inchers
-
Any fresh action out there? I'm dying to get back out but can't. Might do some more Eastern scouting before season ends and see if I can fill my second tag.
-
My two Washington state Rio Grande turkeys, not how I wanted to kill them but had to take a poke out at 60 yards and ending up kill both birds.
-
I shot this bird in NH this spring .
-
Wow! Beautiful fan on that bird!?
-
Not the most awesome turkey, but my first. Came in to a jake decoy on my left while I was trying to call a bird out in front of me. I'll take it!
-
Last day. Good luck to anyone still out there! Good job on your first bird Spur!

Filled my second tag this past Sunday on big rio tom. Birds were on fire. Called in a group of 4 toms right off the roost. This is the hottest I've ever seen em this late in the season. Congrats to all who got out and were successful this season! (Also, I saw a few hens with chicks already )

Thanks bud. We really like Turkey hunting! It's too fun for the entire family to pass up.

I got myself a juvenile Jake and Jenny and updated my thread for my family hunt.
-
First Jake my daughter ever got. With my Dad and his Jake.
-
Doubled up this past spring. Stevens County. This pair came in following three hens right off their roost and right to the decoys. One was taken by a 1st time hunter that I was mentoring and the other was mine. Shot simultaneously.
-
Got this Tom while on my moose hunt
-
Looks like your moose hunt was a good one between that and your deer. Did you get a moose too?

Indeed I did day six was able to make it happen

BIL and I got a few over the weekend. Ready for the deep fryer on Thursday!
