Who is going? I'm thinking about going out on the 2nd, baseball season is putting a damper on Saturdays.
-
I will be fishing the 10th and 11th of May on Vancouver Island. Not going to do the Wa rodeo this year at all.
-
Might go first opener - prob be last minute decision - we did pretty good last year
-
going May 2 from Westport

going May 2 from Westport
How do you do out of Westport? I’ve fished Neah Bay for many years and we always get our fish, but getting tired of the tribe screwing all the fishermen. Every year I say it’s my last up there. I’ve heard Westport is a bait fishery. Is that true? We kill with artificial out of Neah Bay.

We get our fish on all the normal gear. Pipe jigs, curly tails, and bait all work. I don’t think the ling fishing is as good though.

Last season I went out with Randy Lato from La Push for halibut in Area 2 (1 1/2 hour ride)......party boats from Westport arrived after a 4 hour run. Doubt that everyone got a halibut......because there were boats everywhere competing for fish and they didn't spend that much time actually fishing before the 4 hour trip back to Westport. Try La Push......we limited on halibut and lingcod. I fished with a 28 oz. TNT bar and a dab of Smelly Jelly. Some boats were rigging with lingcod bellies.

Sounds like fun. I've been trying to get out for halibut for years, but something always comes up. Planned on the 5th, but the water was bad, and I guess it's not looking good on Thursday for the same reason. Just curious, what is considered being too rough to fish? Is it a personal opinion, depends on the size boat you have, or something else?

It definitely has a lot to do with your personal comfort level and boat size. If I can keep my lines pretty vertical it is fishable. In 500 ft of water this can take a lot of backtrolling to make this happen, but you can fish in pretty nasty seas, it just takes a lot of the fun out of it.

Will be out of westport Sunday on a six pack for butts and ling.

Got our limit Saturday.

Ok thanks. I was a little confused. I'm looking at the LaPush weather and it's like 60 degrees and 7mph winds thinking it's a go and he was talking like 9 foot waves at 10 seconds or something to that effect. Guess it's different talk 30 miles out.

There is a coast guard formula for swell and second duration in relationship to boat length. Those are decent sized swells and relatively steep. Nice wind report. If going out of LaPush, a southerly wind causes mixed seas. Also if wind is crossing the swell direction. I always prefer to buck the wind out and ride it in, feel safer if it kicks up. Every port and bar has its quarks. Those are easily fished seas if the report ends up being accurate, but i bet they will make quite a few pukers. Have fun.

BC was good to us for a second year in a row. We did not get much in the way of bonus fish like lingcod/rockfish but the hali fishing was pretty good. One highlight was having some fresh halibut and crab we brought in cooked and served to us in the marina cafe/bar while we sat and watched the sunset.
How is everyone else doing? I heard the inside waters have been slow at best... :dunno:

We were up at Port Townsen today. The wind came up around 8AM and I had a puker on board so we called it early. The fish counter at the boat ramp has only seen 2 fish come through there this year.
