Title: Option on MT deer.
Post by: gasman on May 05, 2019, 07:19:07 AM
First year hunting MT, what's your thoughts?

Drew NR deer tag with 2 other buddy, (one is on this forum) and doing our research of where to hunt. There is few options so far but not sure where to concentrate our efforts.
Option 1, one of my buddy has a friend that hunts the NW corner of the state for deer and elk, has killed some dandy bucks, but from my research the deer numbers are lower then many other area in MT. B tags are very limited, and no over the counter doe tags.

Option 2, the other person has family members that live out side of Kalispell, MT. and is going to look at access or other good information on the area. I have not found much info on this area, waiting to hear back from what he finds out, but not many B tags and no over the counter tags.

Option 3, hunting around the Ennis MT area. For what I have found, deer numbers decent, B tags available, and over the counter doe tags, so bring home full freezer is very possible.

Option 4, head east..... for my understanding the farther you go, the better the quality of deer, and more B tags available. Looking around Fort Peck Res. Around Jordan, but have also been recommended to go farther east then that.

None of us are looking for record class bucks, looking for decent bucks and filling the freezer with B tag meat. But if we only brought back one decent buck each, we will be happy. B tags are not a must, but a bonus to fill freezers.

I can't speak to option 1 but 2-4 all offer good opportunity.

Keep in mind if you hunt back east around the Fort Peck, B tags are not valid on the Charles M Russell wildlife refuge that makes up all the breaks area around the reservoir. It would not be hard to fill B tags in any sign in block management area around that area.

I would go 3 or 4, especially since you haven't been there yet.  The chance of getting a decent buck are much higher and that seems like a priority for you.

This is my first year as well. I’ve decided to head over to the Eastern side of the state. At first I was basically just throwing a dart at the map, but now with a little help from a few members here, I’ve got a spot dialed in as to where I’m going to hunt. I’m like you guys, I’m not trophy hunting by any means, I’m just looking to go somewhere cool, have an adventure and see some new country and hopefully lots of Animals and just bring one that makes me happy home for the freezer. I’m a blacktail hunter so just seeing one or two deer a day and I’m happy! Lol.. I’m going solo and my biggest decision is weather to get a motel room or camp out. I’ve heard it can get suuuuuuper cold out there in November. Not quite sure if I’m prepared to camp out in -22 degrees weather.

Pedro! You're going to see a lot of deer over there so don't go and shoot the first nice buck you see unless it's tall and wide and don't come back with any less than 2 deer. For the amount it costs to go over there it's just not worth coming back with only one. The meat has to be processed now in order to get back into Washington as you probably already know. Have a fun trip! Second year in a row I didn't get drawn. :bash:

I've never bought a point in all the years I've hunted there and I think there's been 3 times I haven't got drawn. I guess I'd better buy one next year.  :chuckle:

All options are good except I wouldn’t do the around Kalispell option unless you had some hookup on amazing peice of private ground.
