Title: Shoot or No Shot 2019 - Episode #6
Post by: WapitiTalk1 on May 06, 2019, 11:44:33 AM
Location: Somewhere in the elk woods
Hunt Pressure Status: Minimal
Hunt: Solo hunt
Date/Time:  Early OCT around 8:50ish
Tag: Muzzleloader; 3 PT (or better) bull or antlerless

Long story short, you’ve worked your way across a side hill, following a vocal bull with cows since right at the crack of dawn.  You’re not overly familiar with this area and are more than surprised to come across what you hear and see now in this small opening, right below a cliff, on the smallish bench.   A handful of cows back off to the rear, left of the bull (starting to drop like flies, below the cliff, in their bedding spot) and yep….. right as you get to where you are now, old whale tail screams a bugle from his resting spot.   The thermals are still moving pretty steady downhill this time of the morning.  Your view of this bull is exactly how you see it, right around 80 yards away.

Shoot or no shot here?

If you're shooting, save the picture to your desktop and open in MS Paint, then place a spot, X, or whatever on the critter before you save it back to a jpg or png and add the marked up pic with your post.

I'm not talented enough at 80 yards to pinpoint a shot on a bedded bull. I'm sure others here might have that.  :dunno:

Is there a shot there I could make, yeah. Would I take the shot, no. I'm standing him up and giving myself every advantage in the world to put a tag on him.

I know this scenario well.  I decide to wait it out for him to stand thinking he will casually get up and offer a better shot.  Thermals switch and he runs off without even standing up :chuckle:

PMan, remember this is a smoke pole scenario, not archery (wanted to make sure you saw that).  RJ

I thought the world revolved around archery. My mistake. :chuckle:
