Title: White River MF Bull Tag
Post by: big al on June 12, 2019, 03:38:02 PM
HI folks,

I got drawn for a White River Bull Tag. At least it starts pretty early for MF on October 19? ( Any bull)

I am not familiar with that area and could use some help?  Road access? ATVS? I Plan to go up and start scouting in a few weeks, but don't have the foggiest idea where to start?  Any help is appreciated?

Just go up on the ski slopes and shoot one (Crystal Mtn) that’s the ski slopes. It’s past Greenwater up on the mountain. Or hike into Big Crow basin for a big boy Been scouting it and hoping for a tag for years. Don’t find nothing there just hike up behind Goat lake. If you wanted to be a really easy hunt and don’t care how big your elk is just hike the deep Creek Trail right along Highway 410 you should run into something .

I’d do the same and get up high on the east side of the unit if you’re able. There is some great country up there. I’ve never been up there around the season so I don’t have any specifics, but the big grassy basins up around the PCT (which is the boundary) have a lot of critters early in the year. I’d volunteer as a pack mule but I’ll be in Wyoming then. Enjoy the tag!

Congrats.  I was in your shoes last year and got some great advise from guys on this site.  I was able to scout a couple of weekends during the summer and had a great time during the season.  It's not a slam dunk, but there are plenty of elk in the unit.  Some guys on here would say I wasted the permit by shooting a spike, but when your over 60, hunting solo, and you find a shootable animal only about a mile from the truck on level ground your finger kind of takes over!  PM me if you want some specifics and observations.  I'm sure others on here with much more experience/time in the unit will chime in too.  Have a fun hunt!

might as well leave your atv at home, if you can hike, you’ll have a good hunt. If your a road hunter, buy the Hancock white river pass and you’ll have access to lots of good road hunting. Expect to see elk, and if your not holding out for a trophy you should be able to find a 3 point or better bull.  300+ are not around every corner but there are some big ones.

I had this tag last year, though it didn't start this early...the elk will be in the bugle when your hunt starts...be careful on getting exact locations on here without double checking the area, for example someone already mentioned "big crow basin"...THAT IS OUTSIDE OF THE WHITE RIVER UNIT. But Goat lake is inside the unit, and has a lot of elk but it is not an easy hike, in or out. I highly recommend buying the White River Hancock pass as this will give you options, even if you don't end up going there, and there are parts of it that don't get hunted by the Muckleshoots. I hunted both the Wilderness/Public land area and the Hancock lands...I'm happy with the bull I got as I like to eat elk.

Hunt the gmu 346 PCT/ Louisiana saddle by way of little Naches Road and u will get a nice bull.  U will be into bulls every day.  Walk the PCT on the gmu 346 border and just drop down into the 653 every time you see a nasty hole drop down into the nice cool areas with water. If u don't know how to call very well just bring a hoochie mama with you and squeeze that thing about every 20 minutes.  Its very thick in there.
U will need to walk off the game trails and step over huge fallen trees and u will break lots of branches on the way down into the deep holes so when u fall or break a branch squeeze the Hoochie Mama and keep walking and get as deep as u can.  Start walking in at least 2 hours b4 sun up and stay in there late enuf to where ur last 45min walking to ur truck is dark neededing ur head lamp u will get one. Bring a flash light too so u can use it in the dark cuz it very hard walking as we had a odd freeze back in like 1992 that fell lots of huge branches and trees. Set up camp ur camp on the 346 side. Have a few guys that can get up there fast to help u pack it out cuz it's a hard pack out by ur self.

This hunt is earlier than yours but it will give you a good idea of the terrain and kind of bulls you could find.

That should be a fun hunt. Hubby had the archery tag last year. No bugling until the very last day,we were close to getting it done once or twice, but couldn't seal the deal. Still had a lot of fun, this was our first time really elk hunting. I called a bull 20 yards from me, Hubby had two bulls come in together probably less than that. If I would have cow called to distract, he probably would have been able to get a shot off, I just didn't think of it at the time.
I carried my 30-06 and ended up getting two bear.
Have fun and Good luck!

This a great hunt no matter your style of hunting.  If you are a road hunter, buy the Hancock pass.  If you like to put miles on the boots, there is endless opportunities.  I have drawn the archery tag once and had a blast.  There is great hunting up around crystal mountain, and like another said, the PCT is a great place to hunt as well.  It is beautiful country to hunt when you get up in elevation.  Good luck and keep us all posted.

Congrats! My son had the muzzy tag last year. My daughter drew the same MF tag as you you this year. We plan on spending allot of time in there this year. Huge area with elk scattered all over it. Drive it, find an elky spot and learn it. Don't get to picky it's a tough hunt with cosiderable tribal hunting and weekend hiker/campers. Get away from the roads if possible.  Feel free to PM me with any questions.
Oh, and make sure you bring a bear gun when when scouting, we had quite a few encounters.

You don’t know where I live. There aren’t many choices for the bull tag, And I’m ready to prepare now for next October. You don’t need to put people down because you probably didn’t get drawn. It was 16 points for me.  I’m sure someone will point me in the tight direction yo start scouting.

Congrats on the draw ... I also drew the same tag. Just bought the Hancock pass at a friend's direction who knows the unit well... are you planning on Hancock or the public side?

Fun tag, I think you’ll really benefit from the new season dates. I had the tag last year, I was really looking forward to hunting it hard and finding a big one but then I drew a Nevada bull tag. 6 minutes in to opening day it was over, left for Nevada the next morning. I’ll be up there scouting for someone with the archery tag, happy to help out, pm any questions. Lots of bulls in the unit but the elk are in specific areas spread out over the entire unit.

CONGRATS ON YOUR DRAW!!

I am jealous.... and I don't scout that unit.

I hope to draw it someday just to see knuckleheads tell me I don't deserve it.

I hope you drop a beast and have a blast doing it.

Big Al,
Congrats on the draw!
Ignore the negativity from some on this form.  They just don't get it.  As hunters, we should stick together and help each other out, not rip someone for not knowing an area they applied for.  For many of us, hunting new areas is exciting and rewarding.  You'll get some good advice here from guys who know the area.  Have a great hunt and be sure to post pics, successful or not.

Congrats on drawing that tag.  I put in for that unit as well, hoping to draw some year.  Never hunted it since there is no OTC for that unit, which makes some of the critical comments head scratchers (especially since it took 16 years to draw it).  I'd love to hunt it from the top side via the PCT dropping down to the west into the unit.   That's my plan if I ever draw it.  Although I'd probably buy the timber company access pass as well, as a backup plan.  Would love to draw that tag some year.  Good luck on your hunt, and please post results so those of us hoping to draw the tag some year can follow along.

Congrats.  Had the tag a few years ago.  Fun hunt.   With that early start you can be anywhere in the unit and if you get snow late in the hunt, there are some great places to catch them migrating out of the park.
I agree with others on buying the pass.  It’s cheaper than it used to be and will give you full access.
I live in Enumclaw.   The elk numbers seem to be back to where’s they were in the 80s.
Have a great hunt.

I also drew this tag. Twenty years of applying for quality and bull. First time drawing either. I don't have another twenty years left :) :)  It's scary how close I came to not applying for anything this year 'till my son told me I was being dummie.

It's understood what I'll need to do to punch my tag on this hunt. I'm 61 years old and my legs aren't what they used to be but I have heart and desire. Wish me luck boys.

Buy the pass. Go in bridge gate. After you get over the bridge take a right for an opportunity for some good bulls. If you go to the left you will also have an opportunity for some good bulls. Good luck!

:yeah: Park on the main road and walk back into the swamp on the old logging roads. There always seems to be a couple of bulls hanging in there.

Headed up this Sunday for a few days for the first scouting trip. Thanks to those who Emailed and called giving insightful information. Sticking to public land at this point as it's seems this is better suited to the type of hunting I prefer. Of course if anyone has more tidbits to share I'm all ears :chuckle: :chuckle:

I had the tag last year and got a little 5x6 bull.  It was a fun hunt and put many miles hiking back by the washout and other areas but I ended up lucking out and finding my bull off the 73 road not very far from the truck.  I will be hiking this sunday up by crystal mountain for my sisters birthday and will keep my eyes open and let you know if I come across any elk while we are up there.

I just wanted to say thanks for all the help and suggestions. I am pumped and ready to start looking this area at all the spots people suggested except for the deep dark holes post over blow down. I'm 69 and have not desire to die walking with an elk in my back up a grade I probably can't hike normally.( I like elk meat, qqaw does my family. LOL but thanks everyone. You have been a big help for getting started especially. Perhaps some new stuff will pop up after archery season starts and people fill tags?

Respectfully,

Big AL

We've been all over the Tree farm bear hunting this week, the bulls have started tearing up the trees and hitting the wallows, haven't heard a bugle yet but it does look like things are starting to heat up. Good luck.

HI folks,
Just wanted to finalize my White River MF Bull hunt.
I came close one time but did not succeed. I just wanted to say many thanks to Trophyhunt and ALL the guys who stepped in to volunteer help and availability to help pack.  YOU were all appreciated. I hunted 12 days and covered a lot of ground. I saw elk on some days, all cows and calves. Several White collared Cows.  A special thanks to Jon for hunting with me opening weekend, and all the fellas that offered suggestions as to where to go and where to look. I pretty much completed everyones suggestions BTW>

All in all a discouraging hunt for me and expensive, but lots of beautiful bluebird days to reflect on life, and enjoy Gods beauty, especially up close and personal with Mt. Rainier.  Thank you everyone. Your help, and kindness were greatly appreciated.
Perhaps another year?  The good Lord willing? ...: > )
