Title: Stuck Evinrude outboard
Post by: gutsnthegrass on June 17, 2019, 10:10:23 AM: I picked up a 14’ lake boat from a guy and he gave me a 2.5hp Evinrude with it and told me it was seized. I gave the pull cord a tug and sure enough it’s stuck. Is it worth trying to fix it, or should I just toss it? I’m pretty handy with tools, but will be the first to admit I know nothing about outboards.

2.5hp for a 14 foot boat sounds kind of underpowered.

I’d toss it in the metal recycle bin. If you do restore it you will have an engine worth $200-$300. Though solid performer in its day, these are dirty, stinky polluters by today’s standards. Not worth the effort.

I have a 9.9 2 stroke I’m looking to trade for a long shaft

Post by: gutsnthegrass on June 27, 2019, 10:53:23 AM: I pulled the spark plugs to add some transmission fluid to help break it free and the top plug had white oily fluid. I assume that is water mixed with oil and not a good sign. Going to dump it.

Look up a couple of forums for vintage outboards. I gave a couple away a few years ago that had a cylinder open to rainwater since 1972. Vintage aficionados may want it, and it is better than dumping it immediately.

Flounder wants it too, for the very same reason.

The window for me has passed, but you should consider listing it free on craigslist.
