Title: Hook Regulations Saltwater in BC? Trip summary included below. :-)
Post by: lokidog on July 19, 2019, 08:43:52 PM: Hello. My wifer and I are boating over to Victoria to celebrate our anniversary and plan to fish on the way over and back (two days limit :tup: ).

I have a couple of questions as their regs seem to be about as convoluted (maybe worse) than ours for gear.....

Can I use barbed hooks to fish for halibut, I will not when targeting rockfish and lingcod. And, can I use a treble hook on a bar jig for halibut or deepwater lings?

Also, for the possession limit, how do you prove that the filets in your cooler were from the day before, if you get checked?

Thanks all. I am hoping this goes smoothly as I would like to go over there for fishing more in the future.

We never did figure it the hook rules so we used barbless.

What a great weekend with my beautiful awesome wife!

We fished a few locations on the way to Victoria, we couldn't check in to the marina until one anyways (what a shame...). First spot we lost a couple of lures, too much current.

We then fished the corner below Discovery Island trying to find the sweet spot between good current and too much current (outgoing). We caught a bunch of short lings and a pair of Quillback Rockfish there. We headed west looking for some structure and found a pinnacle about forty feet up from the surrounding bottom. I got a nice 9 1/2 pound ling and lost one other fish. We fished a couple more spots on the way to Victoria with no more luck.

Arriving at Victoria Harbor, I was surprised at how small it seemed. We checked in at the customs dock, really easy, and then got some ice and our slip at Causeway Marina. We stayed at an Air BnB for less than a third of the hotels.

Headed out this morning to Constance Bank. My wife caught a big Red Irish Lord, yum! That was our only fish there though as the current was pretty strong. We did see a guy lose a salmon.

We headed back toward where we caught the keeper ling and fished a few high spots we marked on the way there. I landed an ok Quillback and kept it. We released a couple more that were not all bulged out. Canada requires the use of a descending device. Amazingly, one we caught in about 180' fell off the hook at the surface and dove back down on its own. It is strange how some caught fairly shallow will bloat up when others much deeper don't.

Arriving back at the spot from yesterday, we caught a couple more Quillbacks keeping the almost five pounder that my wife landed. We were using 8oz leadheads as my bar jigs just didn't get to the bottom easily. Finally, my partner hooked a keeper ling that was right at 26" but one centimeter over minimum for BC. A short while later, I hooked another keeper ling that was eight pounds.

Off we went home....

Don't try checking in with the BPA Roam app while still on the Canada side of the boarder... 😕 customs check-in, denied. Ok, so tried again a half mile inside US waters, eventually our entry was again denied so we had to detour over nine miles to check in in person. The officer suggested turning phone off and back on next time to reset its location feature.

I've never seen this before, sea urchin spines in both cheeks of one ling and one in one of the others.

It was 15 1/4", I caught a twelve incher locally a couple weeks ago and was thrilled with that. They are a cool looking fish and delicious.

Post by: lokidog on July 21, 2019, 10:42:22 PM: Oh yeah, distance covered first day from Decatur was 47 miles using 14 gallons of gas. On the way back, including bringing my wife in to Anacortes and me back to Decatur was 77 miles using about 23 more gallons.

Every travel has to have its mandatory "food gathering activity." (It was a fantastic weekend. :) )

OceanPro 220 with fish curtain not Alaska bulkhead. It is 24' OAL.
