Title: Upper Columbia chinooks
Post by: huntnnw on July 21, 2019, 02:27:50 PM: Hit the Columbia for summer run. Some of the best fishing I’ve had for chinooks at times . We hooked 22 chinooks, several sockeye,a 6-7lb triploid rainbow and several jacks.

You're right, they probably hard to edit at this point, but they sure are edible. Do you have much experience with upper Columbia chinook?

I don't know the table fair but suspect they are fine. Perhaps not prime but I'm sure they'll be enjoyed.

Just as importantly, they are hatchery fish made specifically for harvest. We should strive to harvest as many as we can.

:yeah: He's right on. They were put there to be caught, so catch as many as possible.

Post by: 7mmfan on August 02, 2019, 11:46:44 AM: Those lower river fish are an entirely different animal. I don't blame you for being snobbish, they are great fish down there. I used to be of the same opinion on those upper river fish, having grown up fishing the coastal rivers. If you caught one that looked like that it was on it's last leg. The Brewster fish that are dark and lanky still cut very well. Their journey is far from over at that point, so they still have a fair amount of fat, and the meat almost always cuts red.

The further they go or the earlier they come in, the better they hold up. It's entirely possible to catch a nasty in a bay, some of the fish are leaking eggs practically as they touch fresh water.

If you look at the most prized and well known fish like Copper River or Columbia springers, they enter very early and thus have a ton of fat to last a long time in the river without eating which makes them incredible eating.
