My goal is to land a few on 8lb line with my koke set ups. Please post updates and reports.

Try twitching jigs too. Good fun in the salt with no trolling. Find jumpers and throw jigs at them.

:yeah: Or buzzbombs/rotators with a pink mini squid over the hook. Highly effective.
Why don't you up the ante and just go to a snoopy rod?
-
I'm down for that.
-
Try trolling a Coho Killer or similar flutter spoon with no dodger or flasher.
They are already here in decent numbers and good size. I'll send you a PM. There were only a few boat there today; I'd like to keep it that way.
-
Yup, or text me.

Shipwreck.

I got into a batch of them yesterday off Jeff Head, crazy deep for pinks, 105 - 120' on the wire!
-
A couple of bucks this morning.
-
Ya know ... Moving here last year, I had no desire to catch pinks after catching them in the tributaries to the Great Lakes. However, these fish look much better prior to spawning. I might just have to give it a shot. Good work guys!
-
Bleed them, put them on ice and they are excellent eating. They aren't Columbia springers, but then again you can't catch springers in Puget Sound. I would consider myself a fairly snobish fish eater and I have no problem cooking pinks up. Like any salmon, treat them well and don't overcook.
If you toss them in a hot, empty fish box when it is 85 degrees out with sun beating down and troll around all afternoon, they won't be that great for sure.
I just got the boat trailer back in service and will be out in the next few days.
-
Got one on the vintage zebco!

That's awesome. A 202 trophy for sure. Does the drag work?

Yeah, come late September and they’re a few miles up their river, they won’t be so appealing. Kind of like the swimming dead; slimy, tight scales, skin peeling off, humpback zombies.

The drag does work, but it sounded like it was getting tortured when that fish took off. Lol
-
I'm so jealous you guys are out catching them. I drive over the 522 bridge every morning around 5am. The last few days I've started seeing them slapping the surface of the water. I think I might have to go out "steelheading". A few "accidental" humpy bites are not unwelcome....lol :dunno:

My buddy hooked a springer on a Snoopy rod. It didn't end well. Pinks are great targets for that because it is unlikely but plausible to reel one in successfully.
-
Think I'll have to try for them next time I'm in the area

HA!! I've got that same rod sitting in my garage, my first ever pole and reel. Gotta be at least 45 years old. Pretty sure the reel is rusted up though, I cant fish with it.

This works really good!

The boat is loaded, two yutes and I will be headed out in the AM to drop a few pots then hit them hard. One has never caught a salmon and the other is old enough to start learning to run gear and downriggers, so it should be the perfect opportunity for all. Myself, I am hoping for at least one fish and a crab or two to whip up some spicy crab rolls for dinner.

Mmmm you had me at spicy crab rolls.

You ain’t lived until you’re caught a salmon on a Zebco 202 reel.😉
I’ve got that block checked.👍

Several years ago, I was fishing with my daughter, she must have been 6 or 7 at the time and she wanted her own pole. So, I put out the Zebco 202 rod with a small dodger and a spoon on it, no weight just trolling it behind the boat near the surface. Something, I’ll never now what, slammed it. About 4 feet of line stripped out then the reel froze, then the rod broke at the first eyelet below the tip, then it broke at the next one, and the next one, and so on down the rod until the handle finally broke and the reel, rod pieces, and everything else disappeared into the deep. I wish that I had a video of it.

We’re 4 for 10, got out late and the bite really slowed. Kids are loving it.

Landed 4 pinks yesterday on Possession while fishing for Kings. 3 on a 3.5 inch Kingfisher spoon and 1 on a hoochie. Another week and they're gonna be thick.
-
Any kings?
-
I had a small school of pinks hanging out in my smoker yesterday.

Still using those chief smokers you got from me?

Like you I use a 25yr old little chief for smoking fish and my Bradley only comes out for deer and elk sausage

Lots of pinks at Jeff Head this AM, we released 5 and everyone else was getting them too.
-
Tomorrow is the last Saturday Before Black Hills flag fall football games start. I'll be taking my 6yr old grandson out trolling the mouth of the Nisqually. I was hoping to find some pinks but it might still be early down here.

Might be a bit early for the pinks, but there should be a few kings down there by now. May give a try this weekend also.

Can you fish the Puyallup this year? i haven't checked the regs and haven't been over there in a long time for pinks.

Gonna need the check the regs its confusing for the Puysllup and closed curtains for netting. Takes 2min to google and look up the regs
-
I checked a few usual spots in MA13 last night and nothing showing up on the sounder yet.
-
I didn’t know there was another way to smoke fish.

anyone fishing Browns point??
-
Just a note....limited area of 8-2 opens on the 16th....see regs for specific details but basically if you are N of Muk ferry you are not legal.
-
Got 3 kings at Kinston this morning. Ran over to Edmonds and caught 3 pinks to round out our limits. On the way back to Everett, Brown's Bay and the Shipwreck area were loaded with pinks.
-
Can't stand it, we're headed out now for the evening bite.
-
Anyone getting any Coho yet?
-
Talked to a Native selling fish today on the side of Levee road, he said all they had was pinks. No coho. They wanted 5 bucks for a pink, I was thinking, you give me 5 bucks and I'll take one, 😝
-
Anyone willing to pm me a good spot for crab in the shipwreck area or thereabouts? I may take my kids/dad this weekend and give it a try. I’ve shared lots of real specific info by pm and understand not to publicize.
-
So just south of muk....first real bay i soaked a few oots and had decent crab. Really....i just like a nice smooth area around 50 feet that isn't very steep....dump em and fish.
-
Quick limits this morning despite going 4 for about 20.

If you launch out of Everett, look toward your left as you head down there and you'll see the popular spots. Most places with crab in that area will have pots to show you where they are.
-
Those are all great looking pinks. Not like the half dead ones I used to catch on the Puyallup near the Fred Meyer. Some were still in good condition others not so much.
-
Bite was unimpressive last night although the run from Everett down was as smooth as I have ever seen, absolutely great night to be on the water especially if you don't have ac at home.
We hooked 2, landed one and missed one or two bites in an hour and a half of fishing. There were maybe 8-10 boats and I didn't see many caught. Bummer, I was hoping there would be a good evening bite so I could hit it more often.
Since fishing was slow, I took a few pics of how we take care of the fish for those that want to take advantage of this incredible resource. This works the same with most Coho, but different for Chinook and pig silvers just due to their size. As far as I am concerned, this will produce the best meat possible for any given fish.
Step 1, catch them. Usually the hardest part, except for pinks and then netting them is the hardest part.
Step 2, bleed them. You can either give them one light, well placed bonk or just cut them and they will be dead in a few seconds. With the bonk, you aren't trying to for a home run, just stun the fish. One moderately light and well placed bonk is all you want. Don't be the guy that looks like a scene from a gangster movie pounding on your fish. You can't bleed out a dead fish, the heart must be pumping to get the most amount of blood out. I use a knife to cut under the chin between the gills and take one side of the gills with me, harder to explain than do. You can also use scissors and or even tear out the gills with your fingers if you like it caveman style.
I have a 5 gallon bucket I fill half way with water and cut the fish in the bucket and leave it head first. The bucket reduces mess on the deck by at least 50%. Do this as quickly as possible after catching as the pinks will dance around and get bruised if you just let them flop all around. If you fill the bucket full, you will get wet if you stand next to it.
Step 3, gut. I give them maybe 5 minutes to bleed, sometimes even less. The goal is to not let them stew in warmish bloody water for the rest of the day. I use a Coho Cleaner which works great because the mess is outside the boat and I can just leave it there while I fish. Do a good job, get the kidneys all out.
Step 4, ice. I have an icemaker at home, so I usually start with about 20 pounds. You don't need that much, one normal 7# bag would be ok, two better. If you can use freezer ice, it will be as much as 40 degrees cooler than wet ice, I store mine in a chest freezer maxed out. Mix enough clean salt water into the cooler or fish box to submerge the fish. This icy brine will get freakishly cold, my hands hurt when I have to take the fish out and the water makes sure every part of the fish is in contact with cold. If you toss a whole fish on top of the bag of ice, it will take about six days to completely cool.
Step 5, clean. I use the bloody bucket to wash out the Coho Cleaner and then a half bucket of clean salt water to rinse it. Another half bucket to clean the slime off the deck, a rinse on the knife and then the fish is clean and cold and I'm ready for the next one.
As I mentioned, this works for most coho, but if the fish get too big they can flop out of the bucket and fling blood everywhere which sucks. In that case, I usually bleed them in the net, gut and then ice. Gutting keeps the mess at home very minimized, speeds the cooling, slows decomposition and basically leads to a better product. When I get home, I filet and the spine, head, skin and tail go into the crab bait freezer and since there are no guts, there is nothing to throw away and broil in your garbage can for a week.
It took longer to type this than it does start to finish, you can really get a good rhythm going which is helpful if you have a fish coming over the transom every few minutes during a good bite.
This is what works for us.
-
That’s good advice right there. Works for any fish you catch.
-
I forgot Step 6, make something tasty. Tonight it was tempura salmon which was excellent. One pink would easily feed a family of four, they seem to be running rather chunky this year. I left the fish on ice overnight as we didn't get home until after 9 pm and it turned out better than if I had filleted it earlier, the meat was firmer and held up very well.
I usually eat what I can fresh and then either can or smoke the rest (I don't freeze fresh pinks). They are the perfect size for setting aside batches for the smoker and turn out perfect. I also can some up for use during the winter. If I'm lucky, I'll also have canned crab and razor clams that I use for cioppino as well as seafood stew. During the holidays you can use smoked and canned for some great dip.
-
Looks great and I prefer my fish iced for at least a few hours before the filet knife. Overnight on ice is a good thing.
-
Anyone out or going out tomorrow am? Taking a buddy out for his first salmon. Will run south and put gear in right at Shipwreck and work that area. Long outgoing tide. Will start at 35 and 45 on the riggers, trad himpy gear. Any extra advice welcome.
-
What trolling setup and depth seems to be working the best for you guys when specifically targeting humpies?
-
I troll slow....1 to 1.5.....I average 35 to 55 down but watch the sonar....I've had nonstop action before at 150 in 150 feet....I also like short leaders and double hooks.
-
Set up standard for me. White dodger then a little pink hoochie. I like to add maybe a glitter skirt, maybe a spinner.....but I'm also a good example of pretty lures catching more fisherman than fish!
-
The only thing that I might add to that H20 is one of those wiggle head deals in front of your squid, and a slightly longer leader. Something about the way those things make your squid swim works exceptionally well for pinks and silvers. Might be worth a try. I don't know if anyone locally sells them though, I bought them online.
That being said, they're pinks, so if they're around, you'll pretty much catch them, especially on a morning tide.
-
I agree with 7mm, pinks are by far the most aggressive salmon biters out there and they come in the greatest numbers.
Below is what I use on both downriggers, 16" leader length. After a couple days, the red paint gets worn off on the hooks and they are gold and get bit the same so I'm not convinced hook color matters.
-
This has been the hottest lure for me this season. Pink hoochies with a herring strips work as well; keep the leaders short. White (non reflective) flasher, always. I never use a flasher or dodger that reflects the sunlight, I believe it scares off a good number of the biters . Troll slowly, look for schools on the surface and head their way when they show. Fish first light to the 1st tide change if you can.
-

-
I made a clearish flasher to run an experiment with next time. It has a slight purple hue, but certainly the closest to invisible I have. I'm putting my money on flashy, but we'll see how the fish vote.
-
Awesome info! Thanks for sharing!

This is what works for us.
I poor the fish blood on the garden. It takes the rhubarb from brown and wilted to green and perky in about 15 minutes.
-
Boat is rigged, see you on the water in the am.
-
Well? You've been on the water 2.5 hours now. Pony up man.
-
Few shakers, seal broke one off, just lost one
-
Seal took a humpy??? My guess is that was a silver....
-
Seals are starting to get pretty thick, especially around the mouth of the Snohomish, I'm guessing pinks are stacked all through there now.
-
Musta been...18 lb er fo sho....
Ok we did land one.....schools visible....water is clear.
-
@Stein - I do a pretty similar routine but I've added one thing: When I get back to my truck, I fillet the fish and vacuum seal them right then and there. I have I run an extension cord from my power inverter and can usually wrap it up in 5-10 minutes depending on quantity of fish. My goal is always to minimize the amount of work I have when I get home and have 3 young kids running around me :chuckle:
-

Saw a seal chasing fish under the 522 bridge this morning. It's crazy how many fish are already in the river. Usually doesn't get that many for another week or more.
-
Anybody know the reason for the completely insane pink regulations? OK to fish in 9 but not 8-2, then ok in 8-2 a couple weeks later but not north of the ferry in the new "8-2 south" region, while 6 and 9 are wide open? Seems to me that a fish would have to go through 6 and 9 to get to 8-2? The 8-2 ferry boundary is equally puzzling.
Maybe we'll get thrown a bone by having an in-season return update and bonus limit when the coho show starts.
-
WDFW just shut area 8-1 down effective Saturday 8/17 for pink retention :bash:
-
Realistically, I think they're trying to provide as much opportunity as possible while keeping the areas they congregate the heaviest off limits. If they're that worried about the Stilly and Snohomish fish though, just keep 8-2 closed completely and call it good. Let fish get to the rivers and then have a later season opener.
I just hope it isn't to provide distinct areas for sport fisherman and seiners and keep them separated. >:( The seiners like the water north of the ferry terminal.

That seems the most logical reason I have heard. If so, hopefully it was a trade for some of the popular sport spots in 8-2 and 9 and not just a takeaway. If they traded south 8-2 or 9 for having north 8-2 to themselves that would be a real positive for both parties in my book.
It does seem pretty early to be making a run call on the Skagit, wonder where they are counting them this time of year?
It's also a bit strange that they announce the 8-1 closure on Facebook, but it doesn't appear in their emergency rules or on the app.

Boat is loaded, we’re going to try south of the ferry first and then head to shipwreck if they aren’t up there.
Round 1 of the pink showdown pits the Pink Pounder against White Lightning.

Pink Pounder is proven white flasher with reflective on one side and glow on the other. If pinks had a post office, this poster would be on the wall. By chance it has the sound producing chip thing that was all the rage for a couple weeks years ago. It’s the dependable guy that shows up to work early, stays late and rips out of the parking lot in the Nova. It’s marked with an “S” which stands for Slayer, the best of the best, even among champions.
White Lightning is a white flasher minus the tape on both sides and sanded flat to make sure there is as low of a flash as possible. Bling factor zero. Maybe -1. It goes against everything we think we know about salmon but probably don’t. Think Peter Brand from Money Ball. No chicks, no Instagram and few followers. Tackle shops hate him.
Both have identical leader, hooks and hooches.
Game on.

I have always done better with the Pro Troll white glow flasher as you call it the Pink Pounder. It out fishes everything else, I think its because it rotates at slower speeds.
-
I'll be out in the morning also. Going to try an early Coho spot or two and if that doesn't pan out we'll try for pinks. With area 8-2 opening I'm expecting a line a boat launch.
-
Call me if the bite is on, I have a good guess where you will be. 😊
I tied up all the coho gear tonight just in case. If I see fish on the screen below the pinks, contest may be paused.
Crab traps are loaded too, can’t complain to have the day off.

This may be one of the best side by side comparisons I've read in a while. My vote is pink pounder, I just like the name.

anyone catching pinks in the south sound yet?

I just drove down River Road along the Puyallup and I can tell you there's hundreds of guys lining the river. They must be in there.

I was down there before work this morning, no fish in it. Y'all should just stay home. 😉
-
Be careful with the regs down on the Puyallup.. Unless I am reading something wrong, 12" minimum.. A 12" pink is considered an adult. So limit is 2 pinks. Only way to get to 6 is with jack kings or silvers and only 1 pink on the stringer.
SALMON Aug. 15-Dec. 31 Min. size 12". Daily limit 6. Up to 2 adults may be retained. Release chum and wild Chinook.
Adult Salmon In freshwater and Marine Areas 2-1 and 2-2, Chinook 24" or more in length; coho 20" or more in length; and pink, chum, and sockeye salmon 12" or more in length, are adults
-
OK, the verdict is there is no verdict. 6 in the boat, 3 from each. We had two pop off before I got to the rod and lost a couple on the reel in. I would say White Lightning maybe had a slight edge of a bite or two, but it was one of the few times both rods were getting slammed about as equally as I remember. Almost all the time one rod will significantly out perform the other.
I had to go to backup Pink Pounder as Pounder #1 got pounded and lost a hook somewhere between fish 1 and 3.
I was trolling faster than normal due to the huge outgoing tide, right at 2.5 SOG for all of the bites. Play of the day was an aerial net on fish #6, I've tried it many times but this may be the first time I connected.
If you have kids or a desire to reel in pinks, this would be a real good time to go out.
-
On the bad news front, I blew a trailer spring going over the bridge north of Everett. Karavan trailers in their infinite wisdom uses some type of proprietary spring you can only get from them - unlike 99% of the rest of the free world that uses normal springs you can buy locally and get back up right away. So, I'm probably 7 days out of the water while I wait for the brown truck to show up. :yike: 3 day shipping was an extra $138 :yike: :yike:

Anyone hook into any fish on the puyallup yet? Was down Purdy low yesterday and only seen one fish caught... no hook ups for me.

Are they leaf springs?
-
Yeah, 1500# slips. Like this but not broken.
I'm tempted to find a shop that can rip the old springs and mounts off and put new ones on. The old ones are only clamped to the frame, so if I had time and knew what I was doing I would go another route. The shop in Everett I took it to had no interest in selling me new springs and clamps.

The fruit stand hole on the Puyallup was on fire today tons of pinks caught and a few kings mixed in as well. My brother got a nice 14lb king and a pink and I got 2 pinks. Between the both of us we probably hooked 40-50 fish. Everyone up and down the river were hooking up/catching fish.

Good deal, wonder how decent it is higher up yet, hate fishing shoulder to shoulder. So many rude people now a days. Not worth the fight! Cannot wait for the carbon to open!

:EAT:
Fish and chips turned out great.
-
Nice. Gear all rerigged, fresh hooks. Smoker going now with fresh mear, salmon carcasses on hand. Water is calling....gotta run out this pm, fish and drop pots. Got some hoochies and a few spoons tied up.
-
Fish and chips with pinks is much better than I expected, we did tempura last night. Pinks seem to be much milder and the family can't get enough.
-
Launched out of Everett with 2 buddies at 5:00 this morning. The plan was to troll coho gear and see what happened. Green and white spatterback hoochie on one rod and a kingfisher spoon on the other. Tried to fish the baitbox but to much grass in the water. Moved over toward shipwreck and started hitting fish here and there. Once we had 4 pinks in the boat we moved to the west side of possession bar to search for coho. Had a nice one on that we lost about 20 feet from the boat. Classic coho arial acrobatics. Released a couple pinks so were could keep fishing. Didn't seem to get anymore coho action so we kept the next 2 pinks we caught for our limits and called it a day.
-
Decent quick trip....only about 2 hours on the water......went 1 for 5 with the rookie wife on the rod for them all. Bonked a nice buck, pulled 5 nice crab, all good. They are imo running bigger this cycle. Lots of jumpers and schools visible on the surface. Fun quick trip, back out in the am.
-
Reports out of Edmonds dry dock was a hot day for pinks around kingston and jeff head. Took my 2 and 4 year olds out for their first trip ever after the noon tide change. My 2 year didnt want to go over about 8 mph so cut the plans to crab and fish around point no point for coho and went to the oil docks instead. Into immediate fish and caught 6 pinks in about 45 minutes trolling around the same area. Only had 1 shake off the line.
Kept 2 since i had the only catch card. They all got to reel some in then lost interest after about 30 minutes. Couldn't have asked for a better fishing experience for them! Called all but 5 hook ups while looking at the sonar, so they thought that was cool too.
All coho gear too....Purple haze flasher, PH coho killer, about 55 feet down going 3mph.
-

We fish up river from there, it was the same up where we were to. Lots of pinks, a few coho, and some Kings, all of which we lost.
-
All white coho killer getting hit the most this am.
-
Limits easy. Spent last 3 days and yesterday running rivers with the sleds. Launched the nisqually flats and shot up to the nisqually hatchery. Lots of rollers, very few hookups but the kings are for sure in there. Puyallup - obviously a zoo. Waters really low so lots of fishing holding at the mouth. 5th street was trash 0/4 for hookups. Old river road was the producer. 2 hours went 8/12 on pinks lost 1 king about 8-10lbs. Basically thats it.
Outside the mouth of nisq fish are holding mostly 8ft. Schooling no deeper than 25 in 75-100ft.
-
Tell you what though, Ive probably caught over 100 spiney dogs in my life and this thing was by far the largest. Couldnt even get my hand around its tail. SOLID.
-
Got my first Pink Salmon ever yesterday. We were part of a Greenriver class.
It put quite a fight. We were fly fishing pink flies (of course) and stripping it in.
FYI... That's a Hunt-WA hat :)
-
Very cool. I'll type up more later but what a day. Went 13 for at least 35. Couldn't keep the 2nd of the last double so ended up with 12 and 7 crab as a bonus. My hot lure was al all white coyote killer. Never fished deeper than 35, trolling east to west back and forth working south between muk and just past shipwreck.
-
A few from the boats out there 👍
-
Area 11 is loaded with them, can't keep them off the lines. I've been targeting kings and silvers the last couple days and been hooking a lot of pinks.
Yesterday we released 3 "wild" kings 12-18lbs, got 4 silvers to the boat but lost 2, and released 6 pinks while also losing a few at the boat.
If you are targeting pinks, Redondo to Browns Point is loaded right now.
-
Yup
-
Almost can't wait for winter time for some seafood stew.
-
Yup
Can’t get much better than that, fish and crab, yum!
-
Heck yeah. Love seein the fish. I got alittle welding to do on my klamath then Im gonna have it out for salmon next year. Im excited.
-
So I'm thinking we are likely at peak humpy migration in area 8-2, 9, abd 10. Thoughts? One more weekend?
-
Pretty easy limits at the shipwreck Friday and Saturday mornings. That, of course, after wading through the wild silvers. We released 9 between the 2 days I have NEVER caught anywhere close to that while targeting pinks only.
-

Y'all still have a couple weeks. My buddy said the pinks were thick this morning at Sekiu
-
Still alittle early, even with the "expected low returns." :eyeroll: Another week and id say its closer to the peak for the sound guys. Early/Mid September for us river guys "for pinks" is typically our peak. Leaning more toward early Sept.
-
They are thick in the shipwreck area. You can’t drop your gear down to chase chinooks without catching a pink.

Ill be in the puyallup literally all day today on old river road. Come say hi if you see me or SG
-
I spent 5 days out at Neah Bay last week with Searun and the Pink fishing was odd...
Day 1: 90% pinks
Day 2: 75% pinks
Day 3: 20% pinks
Day 4: 10% pinks
Day 5: 25% pinks
Regardless the fishing was spectacular for Coho. Saw seals, sealions, sea otters, porpoise, and humpbacks were everywhere. One blue shark was sighted and even caught 3 mackerel.
-
When fish are thick anyone run a spoon just above the flasher? I'm thinking of running the flasher off the ball and clipping in about 5 feet above.

Tacoma waterfront had nice schools swimming by shore. Got this one and lost two others on ultra lite trout rod with 4lb test. :chuckle:

Called ace in the hole I believe. Run your spoon/bait at least ten feet above ball and at least that far beyond the flasher.

I do it, although I haven't tried for humpies. And I don't run it that far back or up. Probably 3 or 4 feet above the flasher and back 7 feet from the wire. The idea is to have it about as far from the flasher as you'd typically want your gear. I haven't tried, but I assume 10 ft up and 10 ft back would put the gear a long ways from the flasher and be detrimental.
-
Roger. Ty. Think I'll give it a go. Standard pink hoochie on one side, run the white coyote killer above the flasher opposite side....see what happens.

Think I might run kiddos up for some shore time up north.

I'd say we were picking up one clipped for every 6 or 7 wild.

Area 7 is closed to all salmon fishing @Buckewe. It opens up again September 1st

Just be warned that you'll probably have to mess with your spacing a bit. You'll have some tangles. Go slow letting it down or other things that could cause the flasher/lure lines to get crossed up.
-
-
Or, maybe you're better than me and will have no issues! It sure is nice to fight the fish with no flasher.
-
Oh, i forsee issues! Vis has beem so good out there i think a little space wont matter.
-
You don't need the flasher, just use the spoon. Put a flasher/hoochie on the other downrigger and set them at them same depth. Set the spoon farther back from the boat than the hoochie so they reach it first.
-
Duh! Didn't even consider it. Thanks!

It says bellingham bay is open starting august 16 I just checked and there are no special closures for the area.i could be missing something.

I had six hookups in 6 casts today on pinks from the shore :IBCOOL:
But I'm also in Sitka right now. :chuckle:

Picking up some pinks around Redondo this weekend
Also seeing reports of decent pinks coming off Dash Point pier.

NICE Pink
-
Ok ok lol you want pinks, me and a guy both hooked the same fish in the mouth at the same time.
-
I finished the day with 3 jack coho, 1 hatch king and a pink.
The rest were Sg, moms, and her friends.
Coho really started to flood in yesterday, I imagine after todays rain its gonna be hard to keep kings off the line. Lost one yesterday in the 15+ range - on the bank - at my feet - after removing the hook.... :bash: Thought he was done for, Literally on the bare gravel... I turned around for a second and he somehow did 3 flops, got upright, and some how wiggled his way back out. I tried to claw at him with my paws as he took off, boy was that a failure....
-
I'm still praying they open the Snohomish system!!!
-
3 limits for us on the lower Green/Duwamish yesterday.
-
I'm going to try trolling the Nisqually area again this Sunday. Hopefully some pinks have moved down this far south. Times running out to get the kids on some fish before hunting starts and the boat get put up for the year.
-
the nisqually is SLOW... been down a handful of times and usually have a full card by now. Only have seen 3 fish banked this year and I'm a fat 0.. A pink and jack king last night hit the banks and that was it with the rain and tide in our favor at sunset. good luck, hopefully they are stacked at the mouth and you'll find some out there. I'd target silvers out there, I know people are getting into them.
-
Skipped out of work early yesterday, got in trouble this morning for not finishing a report, but it was worth it. Landed 9 pinks, lost a nice coho at the bank, in about an hour and a half of fishing. :chuckle:
-
Might head down to the puyallup tonight again, i shall report.
-
Anyone out in 8-2 or 9?
-
Bro in law out just N of shipwreck. Bonked a few, sight casting with rotators.
-
Did really well on the Puyallup on river road yesterday afternoon. Hooked one on my 5th cast, couple back to back hooks ups, all pinks tho. I went slow for the last 30min I was there but the guy just up river from me didnt go more than 5min in between hooks ups (he must have had the right color corkies :chuckle: :chuckle:) Ill be back down there Friday after work.
-
I hit the Nisqually this AM. Nets out and some fish are in. Caught and released 4 pinks. A few decent kings were caught but fishing isnt red hot yet.

Yeah just alittle early, I went and scoped it out a few time and only seen fish rollin but no hookups. I just usually wait till september.

Anyone out in 8-2 or 9?
Who said we are having a depressed run this year? Well they should take a boat trip in Possession Sound; there fish from one end to the other. One school stretched at least half a mile long by 200 yards wide. They are starting to slime up though.
-
WDFW. They closed 8-1 and didn't give the bonus limit because of the low returns. :chuckle:
Anglers will also have limited opportunities to fish for pink salmon in Puget Sound due to projected low returns this year. There are no "bonus bag" limits for pink salmon in 2019.
This is one of those areas where they could be doing a much better in season job. On both sides, they are reluctant, unwilling, or just not putting enough effort into looking at in season runs to adjust things up or down.
It's all anecdotal, but for me in 8-2 and 9, fishing this year was every bit as good as the monster run a while back.
-
Everyone bitches when the runs get over-fished (rightfully so). The flip side of that coin is that you have to be willing to have some excess escapement (read less opportunity and less fish caught) when the runs come in better than predicted. It's an imperfect science and they are unlikely to ever get it 100% right.
-
I'm fine with reduced limits to ensure that more than enough fish make it to the gravel. I agree that we need better in season monitoring and adjustments, but I think they should always err on the side of caution and making sure ample fish spawn than trying to maximize harvest.
-
All I am saying is that the limit of 2 total salmon was set on a preseason forecast of 608k pinks returning to Puget Sound (all rivers including hood canal).
Who knows what the actual run is, but nobody can argue with a straight face that it is anywhere near that. 2015 was 3.7M when fishing was this good. 2017 was forecast for 1.1M with an actual of 480k (and likely where WDFW's conservative tilt was born).
Not all that many people fish pinks compared to chinook or coho, so there is an opportunity for WDFW to throw us a bone with a bonus limit of an additional 2 pinks when we saw the return was gangbuster. I'm all for being conservative, but sticking with the 608k forecast in the face of the wall of biomass is beyond conservative by any measure.
Anyway, getting late for that now, it will be interesting to see what the actual return number is. I would put money on at least 2M. Maybe we should place bets while we wait for coho to heat up.
-
I hope you're right that there turns out to be way more than predicted!
-

I do as well. Banner years ahead if 2 million showed and tons make it to gravel with the river closures.
-
I was going to go last weekend and ended up not. Kinda bummed because I was looking forward to getting the kids out. Hopefully it’s great in the years to come.
-
Boats hooked up, early to bed, early to rise. Gonna hit em at sun up.
-

Yeah, it sounds like keeping the eggs from flooding out of the river is the big key. Pinks only need 2 years, so we'll see pretty quickly. Area 9 is wide open for commercials, I'm not sure if they will target them much or not. I never did figure out why 8-2 was split, I didn't see any commercial openings up there.
I should have weighed a few, we got probably 3 or four real big toad bucks. One stripped a bunch of line and I though I foul hooked it in the side. They were not nearly as tasty as the smaller females, but they'll get eaten.
Most of the stomachs were loaded with fish, those things must eat like crazy to get that size in such a short period of time.
-
Stein,
I concur. We had a couple last Friday and Saturday pushing 7 lbs. Maybe the biggest we ever got. But yes, the smaller hens are much tastier.
-
Pretty good am. Did some downriggering, did some sight casting. Got my fish and five fat crab. Back out tomorrow for a final humpy hurrah.
-
Did alittle time at the nisqually, pretty slow still - about 1 king an hour between 20 people. September and some rain ill be there daily.

2 limits in my boat, 3 in a buddy's boat and 4 in uncle Rich's boat.
Broke my X11 on the first fish I mn the day pulling the line out of DR clip, but got the fish.
Also boated a 13lb king, fished Redondo.

Boat.
We also had two limits earlier in the week. WDFW fish checker said the average that day was 1.5-2 per boat.

Fishing solo of the shipwreck I caught and released 7 vertical jigging an 1 ½” buzz bomb on a trout pole. They are a hoot on 6 lb test. I actually lost less fish this way then I usually do on trolling gear.

Yup, two man limit before 8 this am. Two on the rigger, two on the sp8nning spotting and casting. Light to medium action, 10 lb line, good times.

I had to do crap around the house today so I put this together.

Lol back in the day when me and h20 were friends, we did some real intense designing and testing. H20 finally came out with a real nice gopro torpedo that actually swam really nice, no drag like that downrigger ball would have. With the downrigger setup Id worry about literally that, the drag being applied to the camera itself while in a troll. The ball does such a good job at holding in place I see that camera getting ripped off the first or second use.
Like he said the thread is listed here somewhere.

Deep water 180 to 250, 40 feet on the wire.
Wife was using Purple Haze dodger and Kingfisher spoon.
I got mine on a micro hoochie with wabble head (orange) pulled it out of my Koke box.
I ran a flasher 6 feet off my DR Ball, and main line to the DR clip, with my hoochie about 4 feet behind and above the flasher.
-
Gasman, thanks for the info! Gave it a shot this morning and it was slow going. Lost one at the boat and that was it. Most fish I saw caught were shakers. Talked to a handful of boats and all said it was a slow day. Again, thanks for the info

They may have moved south, try Brown's Point or along the Tacoma Waterfront,
BUT I'm sure more are to come, they are still getting big numbers up North off Whidbey island.
If you can, go to Brown's point lighthouse park around high tide, watch the shore fisherman, if they are catching fish, then they are still in the area.
I know we seen fish surfacing, rolling and jumping around the Yellow buoy south of Vashon when we were passing by both days  probably didn't need to run to Redondo, but since we did so well, we headed that way.
-
Fish are still there in 9 and 8-2. Easy limits the last few days.

it's better than the complete closure it was scheduled for..
I agree their numbers were way off this year. "low pink return" turned into a great run..."reduced kings" turned into a great season... to be honest i think the coho run might be garbage if we got off this logic :chuckle:

For all you fishermen of the Puke:
Anglers allowed to retain 2 additional pink salmon in the lower Puyallup River on days open to fishing
Action: Anglers may retain 2 additional pink salmon as part of the salmon daily limit.
Effective date: Aug. 31 through Oct. 31
Species affected: Pink salmon.
Location: Puyallup River, from the 11th St. Bridge to the East Main Bridge.
Reason for action: 170,000 Pink salmon have been passed above the Buckley trap, exceeding the preseason forecast and the escapement goal for the Puyallup. The higher than expected return supports additional harvest opportunity for recreational anglers.
Additional information: Salmon: Min. size 12”. Daily limit 6. Up to 2 adults plus 2 additional pink salmon may be retained. Release chum and wild Chinook.
A reminder: Pink salmon over 12” are considered adults. Anglers may not continue to fish for salmon after the adult portion of their daily limit has been retained. The lower Puyallup River is closed to all recreational angling Sundays, Mondays, and Tuesdays during the months of September and October.
-
Good. They had conservative regulations until they reached their escapement goals and now they are opening up a little. This is the way it should be. Start slow, make sure you get the fish you need, and then let people have a more liberal crack at what's coming.
-
Actually going tomorrow. Fishing Mukilteo to shipwreck area. Any recent reports?
-
Yesterday and today were still pretty hot. 1/2 mile north of the shipwreck to a 1/2 mile south. We're done for now.
-
I’ll be out as well. 3 hr drive home from the airport foiled my Friday trip.
I’m hearing of a reasonable number of coho being caught and the pink cloud is very much still present.
Tons of trailers at Everett this afternoon.

6 in the bag, 3 triples. We got 2 on one of them and lost the third at the net. Fish seemed to be really inhaling the hooks today,

Any Coho?
-
No, but I didn’t try hard. Suspicious fish on the graph at 60’ first thing.

Last hurrah tomorrow for humps and crab. Running koke rods and spoons above the flasher and soaking salmon carcasses for crab. Black RH boats center console. Give us a wave.
-
Two out of three limits today!
I got two 4-5 lbs pinks, friend with the boat got a two pound pink and a 6-7lb coho, other fried got a three pound pink. Pinks were caught on gear targeting coho green and white hoochies and the silver was on a little pink ace high fly with a 8” white dodger. All about 50-60’ down.
Best day on the water I’ve had in years!
-
Anyone else notice tons of soft crab? I threw back 5 soft keeper sized ones in 2 pots today. Seems way late for that.

We threw back some of the biggest crab I've ever seen that were soft this year. I'd bet we threw back well over 100-150 soft keeper sized. But there was still hard ones out there. Limited every day except yesterday, but still went 8 for 10.
-
Why so many soft crab?
-
Wish I knew. We’re lazy and throw 2 pots on the way to fish. Most years that gives us 5-10 keepers. This year we get the same number, but 90+% are still soft.

Lots of soft crab out at Westport too, a couple of weeks ago.
-
We started fishing at 2 or 230 and fished until about 5. Ended up with seven pinks and got about eight crab on the way in. 2 trolling and the other 5 twitching a white hootchie jig.
-
Picked up two pinks last night near fox island jigging pink darts.
-
S of muk m, lots of schools.
-
Easy limits. Didn't even bother with downriggers much. Sight cast to huge schools for easy limits.
-
What lures did you use?
-
Rotator brand buzz bomb with a pink hoochie over the hook. Sight cast into schools, hard twitch, the hot the hoochie on the fall. Very aggressive fish this year. We had a 5 man limit in less than an hour. Just run and gun looking for schools.
-
Just finished washing the boat, it smelled and looked like a bad crime scene baking in the sun for a week.
We picked up our 3 limits today, but got out late due to a near mutiny when I went shaking bunks this morning.
Our fishing seemed a bit more challenging then yesterday, which is to mean I had to actually pay attention and get the right speed and depth instead of just dropping everything to 45' and reeling them all in. Our best rod was the middle bonus rod with a diver set out 60-75' with sockeye gear. :dunno:
We ended with only two doubles, but discovered my son is the netting champion of Puget Sound. He scooped up one mid-air as well as one that spit the hooks to finish our limits.
All softshell crab except one hard keeper, threw back just shy of 50 in two pots including the biggest crab I have ever seen - I should have taken a picture of that pig.
The fish checker said she saw 50 coho yesterday but only 5 today.
Just getting ready to fire up the smoker, I will do a batch in the canner tomorrow. This is starting to feel like work, but probably the most fun fishery I can think of.
-
H2O, where did you get your rotators? Just found out about them on Friday!
-
Gregs in lake Stevens.

Thanks, a little out of my way but good to know!

Stein, way to go man! It’s crazy how well the diver set ups work! We’ve been having more success with those than the DR.
Tell your son he had the most important job and it sounds like he was awesome at it! These things are hard to get in the boat.
If you don’t mind me asking, what area were you guys in?
-
I picked one pink this morning off the moth of the Nisqually. A few were caught down here today
-
I was in 8-2.

4 man limit in one stop on a school. 20 min, done.

That’s how our action was once I convinced everyone to stop trolling

Your killing them man! Save some for us 🤣🤣.
-
Cast into the schools rolling and jumping. Done.
-
Exactly. So many fish still coming. All bright and aggressive.
-
My buddy and I, and his 5 year old plus my 4 year old hit the snohomish today. We stopped at 60 fish landed in the boat. A truly amazing day on the water. All fish caught on bobber and jig.
-
I have one more batch in the canner and I'm done. I did a big smoked fish load on the Little Chief that were vac packed and frozen and canned another limit. I realized that with crab closed I don't have a use for the bones, so I made up a big batch of fish stock and am canning that up now. I'm starting to feel like those people on the Alaska shows preparing for winter.
After tonight, all of the fish will be put up and I can go back out again. :chuckle: I'm hoping I can convince myself to target coho, but with all this talk about catching them on trout rods, that may win out. Special thanks again to WDFW for no bonus limits on the salt - good to be very careful to make sure they get at least 600k back like the preseason estimates.
-
Today's smoked batch with yesterday's fish as well.
-
First batch with a new brine, turned out great. Did about half the pinks that I had cut up in the freezer.
-
Nice
-
Nice
Yours looks real good, got a secret brine recipe??
-
Cast into the schools rolling and jumping. Done.
:yeah:
It's amazing seeing how many people blow past me to go up river on the green when they can just move with the jumping fish. Every time I go out we all get limits, yet the fish checkers say the average is almost the complete opposite.
-
H20 and Buck Rub, looks delicious, care to share the recipe and smoke temp/time? My son did his first batch ever, good texture, ok color but was to salty for my taste. You guys look to have it down!!
-
Mine is top secret and not for sharing.....
3 parts dark brown sugar....
Then.....
1 part kosher salt.....
Mix, cover fish fully. Let sit for 3 to 24 hours. Rinse twice, cold water. Let air dry for at least 30 minutes.
Smoke low and slow until desired dryness. I like a moist fish so approx 5 hours with my smoker set at 175 which gives me a smoking temp of about 225 or so.
Once done, let sit to room temp, vac pak.
That's it. I smoke with apple, alder, or I'm also fond of pecan even for fish.

Just remember IF you decide to retain pinks during the ultra-ridiculous THREE day season, the limit is only ONE per person per day....so generous! :lol4:

I did one I found online just to try it out.
1 cup low sodium soy sauce
4 1/2 tsp rice vinegar
1/3 cup dark brown sugar
Heat that in a sauce pan all together then add
Minced Garlic- to taste
1 Tablespoon Ginger Paste
1 cup salt
1 cup white sugar
Soak for 12+ hours, then air dry until tacky
Smoked on traeger with alder @ 180 for 2.5 hours
Cool to room temp. Turned out great.
-
Didn’t turn out salty at all, I was worried about that. I don’t like stuff that’s too salty.

Oh and I forgot, light rinse with with cold water and pat dry before air drying

Awesome, thanks guys! I’m hoping to hit the water this week and get some more salmon to try these recipes on! I’m learning so much about salmon fishing this summer, it’s been really fun!

I've done that recipe for a while, simple and works great. I have to disagree with you on one point though, The let sit to room temp..... NO way, I can't eat enough of that stuff when it's right off the smoker!!!! :chuckle:
-
You guys should try air drying longer. Like at least overnight before going into the smoker. It lets the salt evenly distribute throughout the fish and you end up with an even tastier product.

I was hoping to do that this go around but didn’t have enough fridge space for it all. I definitely will with the next batch.
-
I just do it on the counter. There’s enough salt that it’s fine.
-
Anyone fishing 8 2 or 9 between now and Sunday targeting pinks? Looking for reports.....may schlep a guy around looking for a bent rod.
-
I’m looking at Friday but will probably start in search of coho. I can’t imagine the pinks will be gone.

Things are slowing down for Pinks in the Puyallup River. Silvers are coming in though, so all is good.
-
On the water report from today in 8-2 and 9. One school of pinks spotted, bro in law went one for two. Few jumpers here and there, stragglers late to the party.

Silvers are late, still haven't shown up in numbers, and these early ones are small.
-
Plenty of pinks spawning in Goodell Creek right now. Looks like the next generation is off to a good start.
-
A pink caught yesterday looking delicious lol

I would burn the net.

Sweet! That will smoke up great. Use a lot of spices. :EAT: :chuckle:

Bumping this up. There's a lot of info in this thread that may be useful for this year's season.
-
Caught just 1 last weekend trolling near Redondo.
I should correct myself my wife caught one...... nothing for me.
