If you toss them in a hot, empty fish box when it is 85 degrees out with sun beating down and troll around all afternoon, they won't be that great for sure.

Ya know ... Moving here last year, I had no desire to catch pinks after catching them in the tributaries to the Great Lakes. However, these fish look much better prior to spawning. I might just have to give it a shot. Good work guys!
Yeah, come late September and they’re a few miles up their river, they won’t be so appealing. Kind of like the swimming dead; slimy, tight scales, skin peeling off, humpback zombies.

My buddy hooked a springer on a Snoopy rod. It didn't end well. Pinks are great targets for that because it is unlikely but plausible to reel one in successfully.

The boat is loaded, two yutes and I will be headed out in the AM to drop a few pots then hit them hard. One has never caught a salmon and the other is old enough to start learning to run gear and downriggers, so it should be the perfect opportunity for all. Myself, I am hoping for at least one fish and a crab or two to whip up some spicy crab rolls for dinner.

Several years ago, I was fishing with my daughter, she must have been 6 or 7 at the time and she wanted her own pole. So, I put out the Zebco 202 rod with a small dodger and a spoon on it, no weight just trolling it behind the boat near the surface. Something, I’ll never now what, slammed it. About 4 feet of line stripped out then the reel froze, then the rod broke at the first eyelet below the tip, then it broke at the next one, and the next one, and so on down the rod until the handle finally broke and the reel, rod pieces, and everything else disappeared into the deep. I wish that I had a video of it.

Tomorrow is the last Saturday Before Black Hills flag fall football games start. I'll be taking my 6yr old grandson out trolling the mouth of the Nisqually. I was hoping to find some pinks but it might still be early down here.
Might be a bit early for the pinks, but there should be a few kings down there by now. May give a try this weekend also.

If you launch out of Everett, look toward your left as you head down there and you'll see the popular spots. Most places with crab in that area will have pots to show you where they are.

We hooked 2, landed one and missed one or two bites in an hour and a half of fishing. There were maybe 8-10 boats and I didn't see many caught. Bummer, I was hoping there would be a good evening bite so I could hit it more often.
Since fishing was slow, I took a few pics of how we take care of the fish for those that want to take advantage of this incredible resource. This works the same with most Coho, but different for Chinook and pig silvers just due to their size. As far as I am concerned, this will produce the best meat possible for any given fish.
Step 1, catch them. Usually the hardest part, except for pinks and then netting them is the hardest part.
Step 2, bleed them. You can either give them one light, well placed bonk or just cut them and they will be dead in a few seconds. With the bonk, you aren't trying to for a home run, just stun the fish. One moderately light and well placed bonk is all you want. Don't be the guy that looks like a scene from a gangster movie pounding on your fish. You can't bleed out a dead fish, the heart must be pumping to get the most amount of blood out. I use a knife to cut under the chin between the gills and take one side of the gills with me, harder to explain than do. You can also use scissors and or even tear out the gills with your fingers if you like it caveman style.
I have a 5 gallon bucket I fill half way with water and cut the fish in the bucket and leave it head first. The bucket reduces mess on the deck by at least 50%. Do this as quickly as possible after catching as the pinks will dance around and get bruised if you just let them flop all around. If you fill the bucket full, you will get wet if you stand next to it.
Step 3, gut. I give them maybe 5 minutes to bleed, sometimes even less. The goal is to not let them stew in warmish bloody water for the rest of the day. I use a Coho Cleaner which works great because the mess is outside the boat and I can just leave it there while I fish. Do a good job, get the kidneys all out.
Step 4, ice. I have an icemaker at home, so I usually start with about 20 pounds. You don't need that much, one normal 7# bag would be ok, two better. If you can use freezer ice, it will be as much as 40 degrees cooler than wet ice, I store mine in a chest freezer maxed out. Mix enough clean salt water into the cooler or fish box to submerge the fish. This icy brine will get freakishly cold, my hands hurt when I have to take the fish out and the water makes sure every part of the fish is in contact with cold. If you toss a whole fish on top of the bag of ice, it will take about six days to completely cool.
Step 5, clean. I use the bloody bucket to wash out the Coho Cleaner and then a half bucket of clean salt water to rinse it. Another half bucket to clean the slime off the deck, a rinse on the knife and then the fish is clean and cold and I'm ready for the next one.
As I mentioned, this works for most coho, but if the fish get too big they can flop out of the bucket and fling blood everywhere which sucks. In that case, I usually bleed them in the net, gut and then ice. Gutting keeps the mess at home very minimized, speeds the cooling, slows decomposition and basically leads to a better product. When I get home, I filet and the spine, head, skin and tail go into the crab bait freezer and since there are no guts, there is nothing to throw away and broil in your garbage can for a week.
It took longer to type this than it does start to finish, you can really get a good rhythm going which is helpful if you have a fish coming over the transom every few minutes during a good bite.

I usually eat what I can fresh and then either can or smoke the rest (I don't freeze fresh pinks). They are the perfect size for setting aside batches for the smoker and turn out perfect. I also can some up for use during the winter. If I'm lucky, I'll also have canned crab and razor clams that I use for cioppino as well as seafood stew. During the holidays you can use smoked and canned for some great dip.

Below is what I use on both downriggers, 16" leader length. After a couple days, the red paint gets worn off on the hooks and they are gold and get bit the same so I'm not convinced hook color matters.

I poor the fish blood on the garden. It takes the rhubarb from brown and wilted to green and perky in about 15 minutes.

Seals are starting to get pretty thick, especially around the mouth of the Snohomish, I'm guessing pinks are stacked all through there now.
Saw a seal chasing fish under the 522 bridge this morning. It's crazy how many fish are already in the river. Usually doesn't get that many for another week or more.

Realistically, I think they're trying to provide as much opportunity as possible while keeping the areas they congregate the heaviest off limits. If they're that worried about the Stilly and Snohomish fish though, just keep 8-2 closed completely and call it good. Let fish get to the rivers and then have a later season opener.

That seems the most logical reason I have heard. If so, hopefully it was a trade for some of the popular sport spots in 8-2 and 9 and not just a takeaway. If they traded south 8-2 or 9 for having north 8-2 to themselves that would be a real positive for both parties in my book.
It does seem pretty early to be making a run call on the Skagit, wonder where they are counting them this time of year?
It's also a bit strange that they announce the 8-1 closure on Facebook, but it doesn't appear in their emergency rules or on the app.

I tied up all the coho gear tonight just in case. If I see fish on the screen below the pinks, contest may be paused.

I had to go to backup Pink Pounder as Pounder #1 got pounded and lost a hook somewhere between fish 1 and 3.
I was trolling faster than normal due to the huge outgoing tide, right at 2.5 SOG for all of the bites. Play of the day was an aerial net on fish #6, I've tried it many times but this may be the first time I connected.
If you have kids or a desire to reel in pinks, this would be a real good time to go out.

Be careful with the regs down on the Puyallup.. Unless I am reading something wrong, 12" minimum.. A 12" pink is considered an adult. So limit is 2 pinks. Only way to get to 6 is with jack kings or silvers and only 1 pink on the stringer.

Anyone hook into any fish on the puyallup yet? Was down Purdy low yesterday and only seen one fish caught... no hook ups for me.

On the bad news front, I blew a trailer spring going over the bridge north of Everett. Karavan trailers in their infinite wisdom uses some type of proprietary spring you can only get from them - unlike 99% of the rest of the free world that uses normal springs you can buy locally and get back up right away. So, I'm probably 7 days out of the water while I wait for the brown truck to show up. :yike: 3 day shipping was an extra $138 :yike: :yike:

I'm tempted to find a shop that can rip the old springs and mounts off and put new ones on. The old ones are only clamped to the frame, so if I had time and knew what I was doing I would go another route. The shop in Everett I took it to had no interest in selling me new springs and clamps.

Kept 2 since i had the only catch card. They all got to reel some in then lost interest after about 30 minutes. Couldn't have asked for a better fishing experience for them! Called all but 5 hook ups while looking at the sonar, so they thought that was cool too.
All coho gear too....Purple haze flasher, PH coho killer, about 55 feet down going 3mph.

The fruit stand hole on the Puyallup was on fire today tons of pinks caught and a few kings mixed in as well. My brother got a nice 14lb king and a pink and I got 2 pinks. Between the both of us we probably hooked 40-50 fish. Everyone up and down the river were hooking up/catching fish.We fish up river from there, it was the same up where we were to. Lots of pinks, a few coho, and some Kings, all of which we lost.

Yesterday we released 3 "wild" :rolleyes: kings 12-18lbs, got 4 silvers to the boat but lost 2, and released 6 pinks while also losing a few at the boat.
If you are targeting pinks, Redondo to Browns Point is loaded right now.

I do it, although I haven't tried for humpies. And I don't run it that far back or up. Probably 3 or 4 feet above the flasher and back 7 feet from the wire. The idea is to have it about as far from the flasher as you'd typically want your gear. I haven't tried, but I assume 10 ft up and 10 ft back would put the gear a long ways from the flasher and be detrimental.

Just be warned that you'll probably have to mess with your spacing a bit. You'll have some tangles. Go slow letting it down or other things that could cause the flasher/lure lines to get crossed up.

Coho really started to flood in yesterday, I imagine after todays rain its gonna be hard to keep kings off the line. Lost one yesterday in the 15+ range - on the bank - at my feet - after removing the hook.... :bash: Thought he was done for, Literally on the bare gravel... I turned around for a second and he somehow did 3 flops, got upright, and some how wiggled his way back out. I tried to claw at him with my paws as he took off, boy was that a failure....

Who said we are having a depressed run this year? Well they should take a boat trip in Possession Sound; there fish from one end to the other. One school stretched at least half a mile long by 200 yards wide. They are starting to slime up though.

Who knows what the actual run is, but nobody can argue with a straight face that it is anywhere near that. 2015 was 3.7M when fishing was this good. 2017 was forecast for 1.1M with an actual of 480k (and likely where WDFW's conservative tilt was born).
Not all that many people fish pinks compared to chinook or coho, so there is an opportunity for WDFW to throw us a bone with a bonus limit of an additional 2 pinks when we saw the return was gangbuster. I'm all for being conservative, but sticking with the 608k forecast in the face of the wall of biomass is beyond conservative by any measure.
Anyway, getting late for that now, it will be interesting to see what the actual return number is. I would put money on at least 2M. Maybe we should place bets while we wait for coho to heat up.

Yeah, it sounds like keeping the eggs from flooding out of the river is the big key. Pinks only need 2 years, so we'll see pretty quickly. Area 9 is wide open for commercials, I'm not sure if they will target them much or not. I never did figure out why 8-2 was split, I didn't see any commercial openings up there.
I should have weighed a few, we got probably 3 or four real big toad bucks. One stripped a bunch of line and I though I foul hooked it in the side. They were not nearly as tasty as the smaller females, but they'll get eaten.
Most of the stomachs were loaded with fish, those things must eat like crazy to get that size in such a short period of time.

I had to do crap around the house today so I put this together.Lol back in the day when me and h20 were friends, we did some real intense designing and testing. H20 finally came out with a real nice gopro torpedo that actually swam really nice, no drag like that downrigger ball would have. With the downrigger setup Id worry about literally that, the drag being applied to the camera itself while in a troll. The ball does such a good job at holding in place I see that camera getting ripped off the first or second use.

Deep water 180 to 250, 40 feet on the wire.
Wife was using Purple Haze dodger and Kingfisher spoon.
I got mine on a micro hoochie with wabble head (orange) pulled it out of my Koke box.
I ran a flasher 6 feet off my DR Ball, and main line to the DR clip, with my hoochie about 4 feet behind and above the flasher.

They may have moved south, try Brown's Point or along the Tacoma Waterfront,
BUT I'm sure more are to come, they are still getting big numbers up North off Whidbey island.
If you can, go to Brown's point lighthouse park around high tide, watch the shore fisherman, if they are catching fish, then they are still in the area.
I know we seen fish surfacing, rolling and jumping around the Yellow buoy south of Vashon when we were passing by both days :tup: probably didn't need to run to Redondo, but since we did so well, we headed that way.

I got two 4-5 lbs pinks, friend with the boat got a two pound pink and a 6-7lb coho, other fried got a three pound pink. Pinks were caught on gear targeting coho green and white hoochies and the silver was on a little pink ace high fly with a 8” white dodger. All about 50-60’ down.
Best day on the water I’ve had in years!

We picked up our 3 limits today, but got out late due to a near mutiny when I went shaking bunks this morning.
Our fishing seemed a bit more challenging then yesterday, which is to mean I had to actually pay attention and get the right speed and depth instead of just dropping everything to 45' and reeling them all in. Our best rod was the middle bonus rod with a diver set out 60-75' with sockeye gear. :dunno:
We ended with only two doubles, but discovered my son is the netting champion of Puget Sound. He scooped up one mid-air as well as one that spit the hooks to finish our limits.
All softshell crab except one hard keeper, threw back just shy of 50 in two pots including the biggest crab I have ever seen - I should have taken a picture of that pig.
The fish checker said she saw 50 coho yesterday but only 5 today.
Just getting ready to fire up the smoker, I will do a batch in the canner tomorrow. This is starting to feel like work, but probably the most fun fishery I can think of.

Stein, way to go man! It’s crazy how well the diver set ups work! We’ve been having more success with those than the DR.
Tell your son he had the most important job and it sounds like he was awesome at it! These things are hard to get in the boat.
If you don’t mind me asking, what area were you guys in?

After tonight, all of the fish will be put up and I can go back out again. :chuckle: I'm hoping I can convince myself to target coho, but with all this talk about catching them on trout rods, that may win out. Special thanks again to WDFW for no bonus limits on the salt - good to be very careful to make sure they get at least 600k back like the preseason estimates.

It's amazing seeing how many people blow past me to go up river on the green when they can just move with the jumping fish. Every time I go out we all get limits, yet the fish checkers say the average is almost the complete opposite.

Then.....
1 part kosher salt.....
Mix, cover fish fully. Let sit for 3 to 24 hours. Rinse twice, cold water. Let air dry for at least 30 minutes.
Smoke low and slow until desired dryness. I like a moist fish so approx 5 hours with my smoker set at 175 which gives me a smoking temp of about 225 or so.
Once done, let sit to room temp, vac pak.
That's it. I smoke with apple, alder, or I'm also fond of pecan even for fish.

My buddy and I, and his 5 year old plus my 4 year old hit the snohomish today. We stopped at 60 fish landed in the boat. A truly amazing day on the water. All fish caught on bobber and jig.
Just remember IF you decide to retain pinks during the ultra-ridiculous THREE day season, the limit is only ONE per person per day....so generous! :lol4:

Minced Garlic- to taste
1 Tablespoon Ginger Paste
1 cup salt
1 cup white sugar
Soak for 12+ hours, then air dry until tacky

Awesome, thanks guys! I’m hoping to hit the water this week and get some more salmon to try these recipes on! I’m learning so much about salmon fishing this summer, it’s been really fun!It’s addicting that’s for sure!

You guys should try air drying longer. Like at least overnight before going into the smoker. It lets the salt evenly distribute throughout the fish and you end up with an even tastier product.I was hoping to do that this go around but didn’t have enough fridge space for it all. I definitely will with the next batch.

Things are slowing down for Pinks in the Puyallup River. Silvers are coming in though, so all is good.
Silvers are late, still haven't shown up in numbers, and these early ones are small.
