Title: Round 1 Oregon Archery elk
Post by: Crunchy on August 25, 2019, 08:23:00 PM
Just got home from Eastern Oregon archery elk hunt.  Legs are tore up as one would expect.  Arrived Friday, the day before the opener, and ran out to our usual haunts to hang some cameras.  Bulls are usually  not in these areas this early in the season but appears from years past to be a breeding area(s).  Woods are silent, with no bugling as expected. Did see a herd of elk crossing the mainline at about 200 yards.  Not sure if they were any bulls in the herd.

Day 1 the opener which was Saturday.  Got into an area I have killed two bulls in the last few years.  Let out a single cow call and had a herd of elk heading our way.  Turned out to be 4 cows, and a small spike.  They came into about 70 yards before they winded us and took off.  No big, too early in the season to kill cows or small bulls.  Evening hunt hung a few more cameras, and looked for fresh sign.  Lots of fresh track, but not much else.

Day 2 AM hunt.  Put on some miles in a big circle, decent track, not much elk.  Hung a camera on a new wallow we found.  On the way back to camp bumped a herd at about 20 yards.  Only saw one of the elk which was a cow, the rest took off in different direction.

Headed home after the morning hunt.  Saw elk every day, hung cameras, got stung by a hornet twice under the arm (ouch)! Nothing like sleeping in the wall tent with the wood stove going.  Best sleep I have had in a while.  Headed back down soon.

There is a few moving around down at the coast. More fresh rubs this year than i can remember seeing this early in the last few years.

It's always nice to get back to hiking with a bow in hand. Things will definitely be changing over the next few weeks.

We didnt see any fresh rubs, but that isn't unusual for the  early early season.  Bulls typically are still in the back country.  I'm certain the rubs will be everywhere when we get back.  Big thing was to see cows, which is our live bait for the bulls.

If you guys get in a pinch on your hunt feel free to get a hold of me. Having an alternate exit plan could be a necessity for you this year.

Gonna get hot again looks like. Although I'd rather be up in the woods than staring at the Caps from work everyday.

I was surprised at the number of rubs that we saw, 35 plus.

Not sure where everyone will be but be aware of this closure.

Oddly enough, I don't see any fire restrictions, though it has been a wet year and there is lots of green grass everywhere, I still expected to see fire restrictions.  Maybe I am so used to Washington and having restrictions yearly.

No complaints about opening weekend for me.  I only saw one fresh rub.  I still saw living velvet and heard no noise besides fawn bleats talking with momma.

Hitting the road tomorrow night, trailhead in the wee hours of the morning for a few hours of sleep then heading in for 10 days. Forecast looks to be mid 60's as highs and upper 40s for lows. Not ideal but we will give them heck

That sounds like perfect temps to me.  You prefer colder?

I like upper 50's in day and upper 30's at night. Just enough to see your breath and just warm enough in day to be able to take a mid day nap  :chuckle:

Lucky you guys! Our forcast is looking mid 80’s for highs and mid 50’s for lows at least for the first week. I’m praying there’s a drastic change, but not looking like it as of yet.
