Title: Colockum Giant
Post by: blindluck on September 15, 2019, 08:12:01 AM
We slipped in on this 8x8 brute twice on our hunt, Any thoughts on score. He’s a once in a lifetime bull in my book.

Definitely a giant. Unfortunately probably perfect jerky age so I am sure there will never be a wdfw tag on him if he is in the colockum. Hopefully somebody with the big bull tag can catch up to him before the jerky factory does.

I’d go 370’s on his main frame and 390’s with the extras. That’s an awesome looking bull. Hopefully he was a ways from the road.

I know nada about scoring but if its not close to 400 class then scoring needs changed.  In my eyes that's the Bull to find.  Length, width, mass, 8pt!

Would be great if a legitimate tag holder that is actually "hunting" could get an opportunity at that guy.  Bull of a lifetime!

He is certainly a special animal, he was hanging with 2 other bulls which weren’t close to his caliber but dandy’s. Interesting he doesn’t have the deep raspy bugle you would think. Out of the three bulls hanging on the same ridge you wouldn’t think he was the one to go after by his sound.

The difference is they wouldn’t know this bull exists, now they will be looking for him high and low. You also seem to not recognize there is a race of people that don’t need “tags”. People that narc the location of trophy animals ensure that animal’s demise, poor ethics to not understand the reach of the internet.

I'm sorry to say that this will lead to the demise of that bull in addition to several others who get knocked down while road hunters are looking for him.  I always has confused me how a people who preach the sanctity and honor of wildlife and the right to harvest them, go on to claim native hunting rights over a non native species in non traditional hunting grounds.  And then how do they honor the sacrafice of their brother the elk/deer, by make jerky and sell commercially.  And corrrect me if I'm wrong, isn't the Arther Coffin Game Reserve supposed to be off limits to all hunting?  Seems to be several stories of witnessed bulls coming out of the reserve.  WTH?  Sorry, very frustrating to be out bow hunting and have someone driving around with Rifle slaying big bulls from the road.

Just another in a long list of areas

Margaret
Acme/Skagit
Wynoochee
Clearwater/Hoh

Great elk areas of the past
Decimated by uncontrolled sustenance hunting

Some are slowly coming back thanks to extensive gated  areas
Perhaps the colockum needs the same

:yeah: :yeah: :yeah:  we have a petition going on Facebook about this subject.  As long as we don’t get rude, racist, or demeaning, this post should stay unlocked!!!!!   18 bulls in one day by the natives off the reserve, sign the petition to help draw attention to this BS!  This isn’t about tribal rights, it has nothing to do with the treaty. Private property was donated to the state in agreement that no one could hunt on the property. It is frowned upon even by the tribe and those members that have respect don’t hunt there. But a few bad apples that have a chip on their shoulder do. Let’s gets as many signatures as possible.

From what I’ve been told by a very reliable source, hunting on the Colockum game reserve is legal for Yakama tribal members. Legal, but frowned upon were the words used.

Those are the words they use for everything. Bottom line is they can basically break any game  law they want and all our game officers can do is refer charges to the tribal  courts. And you must be hitting their piece pipe  if you think that their brother-in-law is  gonna press charges against them. I have talked to many game wardens who get very frustrated when they recieve credible leads to poaching cases just to find out they ended up being tribal and no charges are ever perused. Like I Have said before the respectable members really should speak out against these “bad apples”. There is a reason I hate white trash tweakers more than anyone, because they make me look bad.  I would feel the same if I were Native American about these poachers who make everyone assume that’s how they all are.

I believe in freedom.  Including the freedom to speak your mind otherwise known as free speech.  Also freedom to not read others assertion of their free speech!  Also freedom of private forum to remove/bock free speech of mine.  Problem is this forum isn't public owned so our freedom is regulated, like Facebook.  While in agreement with lots of opinions stated I do not bash as its a waste of time and foolish of me to think anything I say will change the ignorant abuses of treaty laws.  I wished an alternative action was available to implement real changes of some sort.  Yet living in Wa. I know it is not possible in todays liberal environment.  Its funny as I am caught in middle of this issue.  I do support Native treaty and rights but I don't support the blatant abuses and disrespect occurring.  Hunts for food, ceremony etc I good with.  Does not include $2000 rifles and snowmobiles on lands designated for regulation or conservation.  Horses and arrows/spears or even a old 1894 Win I could see.  Its a mess and Natives will need to self regulate or continue to fuel disdain of the public.  I for example don't give $ to all the Casinos.  Protesting where it counts, wallet.

18 bulls in one day? Jesus. Where's the link to the petition? I'm very curious to hear more about this.

What I find interesting is that ya'll are talking about this bull like its the only giant one on the mountain...….Colock, or any other elk area.  ;)

It was my understanding this was the last elk in the atate? Until this thread I didn't know Washington had any elk let alone big ones?

Now that the secret is out and the public knows the colokum has some big elk in it maybe it'll take away some of the pressure rinella put on the blues when he clued us all in that there were big elk there last year.

I have been educated-I was struggling with all the flack the op was getting for posting a bull in a controlled hunt area. I didn't see the harm with limited tags and a big area. Not having been there I didn't realize the natives could slaughter them. Makes perfect sense now to maybe post the photo but no way any kind of location ever. I wonder if someone could confirm for a fact the bull was killed by a native?

Were all native hunters unaware there were elk in the unit? I find it hard to believe they were all sitting at home waiting for someone to post a picture on the internet to remind them there were elk to be had

I believe that certain people patrol these sites to see what they can find without looking. It has happened in other areas with elk and Mule Deer.
That’s my  :twocents:

I agree they weren't all surfing the net to find out if there were any big elk there. I felt that way too but I do think the picture probably intensified the pressure and urgency to kill the bull. In a true controlled hunt I don't think the location would matter that much  but when you have a group that can hunt unregulated its not a good idea. Its not my fight anyways just following because its interesting.

This thread is awesome.

People getting butt hurt about the op posting a pic of one of the MANY giants that reside in the general area.

He wasn't specific about location. Colockum = multiple units.

Stop acting like he gave away some honey hole when he named the most applied for, coveted draw unit in the state.

 :bash:

I hunt the Colockum every year, there are always many large bulls around. We've had them in our camp at night a few years, including a week ago. The bugling starts at sunrise and continues until around 10am. Starts again at sunset and continues through the night, sometimes well into the early morning hours. Have been putting in for a bull tag every year, hopefully next year will be the one we get drawn.

Tribes can hunt with state tags too.  Some tribes are in areas that don't really have any elk opportunities and have to hunt other areas with state tags and WDFW rules.

I've seen numerous taxidermist advertise on HW then quickly get overwhelmed.

It's just too easy to go from not quite enough customers to too many customers, then $$ and outsourcing work then the outsourced work goes to crap or doesn't get returned in a timely manner or bad work...

Lot's to go wrong with too many customers

I can, i know a Taxi that does some seriously impressive work but only does it for a few select people that keep him busy enough every year and wants to keep it that way.
Some people live in different tax brackets just saying.
They dont just bring him just one animal a year

He is expensive and doesn’t want all the calls asking what he charges. It takes a long time to do work like this. He has over 100 hours in my elk and another 100 in my moose. He can’t make money spending that much time on a piece unless he charges a bunch.

He doesn’t need the work. As stated above, he has a loyal following and they keep him busy.
