Title: Unit 505 south of hwy 12
Post by: griz_64 on September 22, 2019, 07:05:40 AM: Been doing some e-scouting and found a chunk of port blakely land north of longbell road and south of hwy 12, that I'm going to check out soon in person. My question is has anyone hunted in that general area and seen any elk or some good elk sign? It is close to winston 520 unit so my general thoughts are that there is a good possibiliity of running into some elk for the archery late season. No I am not looking for any gps locations just curious of anyones experince on the southern edge of the 505 mossyrock unit for elk. Thanks

last time I hunted it it was reallllllly brushy

Almost tagged a 5pt in there years ago but only had a down forward shot so a no go. He ran up into devils club 5ft high on me... Was just moving through towards private when I stumbled on him crossing creek draw. I will never go back..

Post by: Goshawk on September 22, 2019, 05:24:42 PM: It's thick in most places. That heard has been really hit hard with hoof rot, so the numbers are way down from just 5 or 7 years ago.

Everything i had been scouting up and disappeared a few days before early started and my area had nothing but bear and yotes showing up. Not sure what my plan will be yet but dont have much of an option at the moment to travel to far with sharing the family car with the wife right now.

I mostly use hunt stand as I can share with my dad who is not tech savy and wont buy something like onx. Yes there is port blakely out there, ive checked both hunt stand and lewis county auditors GIS maps. just did a little scouting and found some ok sign in the area. Its mostly bordered by private with a little weyco mixed in

Post by: griz_64 on September 27, 2019, 12:50:04 PM: there are plenty of elk there, im sure of that. Only issue for late bow is that south of longbell road (unit 520) will be closed. North of Longbell road is unit 505 and will be open for late season. Back in high school I knew the are pretty well but spending close to 20 years and not spending much time in the area has me far out of the loop now days

And I imagine this year with Winston creek not being open late it will be even worse with archery hunters added in. The unit is right out my dads back door and he had a rifle cow tag last year and never saw an elk all season. I've hunted the area my whole life and it is sorry with what has happened with the elk.

Any incite knowledge on the Deer around here? :dunno:

No I wasnt but all I know it your ONx maps for that area is completely off, the county gis and huntstand both have better info for the area in your pic. Like that chunk in yours that says no owner data, that is bear canyon tree farm

Im just giving you a heads up. I trust that countys map more then any app, but isnt onX suppose to use the county maps as well?

OnX doesn’t update their info very often. I have family that bought some land more than 2 years ago and OnX still shows it under the previous owner.

The owner info isn’t updated often, but the fact that it’s private or public is accurate.
