Anyone use them instead of open sights? Any downside?

If you are using a muzzleloader during modern firearm season you could use a red dot. If you are using a red dot during muzzleloader season it would be illegal. From pg.96 Muzzleloader regulations 3c (It is unlawful to have any electrical device or equipment attached to a muzzleloading firearm while hunting).

Pretty much limited to open sights unless you're using a ML during modern season.

I think I had another state in mind initially... ordered a new rear sight, the Williams ghost sight. One i have now just covers up too much of the target, don't care for it. Will try the new one when it gets in and see how i like it.
