Title: US 97 Blewett Pass Liberty Road
Post by: jared p on October 04, 2019, 10:39:09 AM
Heading out there this weekend with my buddy who is going for muzzy elk, i'll have my eyes out for bear, was curious if anyone knew tips/tricks to the area? Looked on OnX and seems to be mostly public everywhere once you get past the township of Liberty itself with a lotta decent hills/valleys. Figured on driving up some of the random forest roads, walking a few draws, driving up another couple miles, walk a few more miles etc. Never gone in from this side before so just wondered if anyone had any advice about it. Thanks.

Turns out that weekend was the Boyscouts outdoors shooting camp out. So there was dozens of kids target shooting on a roped off hill starting at first light and going all day.

Spotted a few little does hanging out, found some of the more swampy areas littered with fresh scat from deer, elk, bulls and cows, and more bear droppings than I've ever seen. Found many stumps torn up where they were feeding, found bear hair on the snow in some spots. Found elk scrapes on some small trees. I went from 3500 to 5500 ft elevation in different areas however the lower areas couldn't really get to because the noise from the Boyscout shooting echoed so hard through the lower elevations I doubted anything would be down there. 4100ft is where the most sign was seen in some swampy secluded steps which was right at snow level. Not sure if they're all pushed down the week prior due to the heavy snow, or if the human noise ran everything off. Couldn't get into a couple areas because of campers and ran into a handful of hikers randomly.

Found a ton elderberries, rose hips, some little white berries I didn't know what they were. All the other berries are gone. Figured everything has moved down but nada. Chatted with some nice hunters muzzy hunting elk from Chelan at the campground in Liberty, said they ran into wolves not a mile away to the south recently.

The snow from the week prior hadn't melted away yet but iced up pretty hard, elk and deer tracks headed up and down to Table mountain, some roads impassable due to snow. Talked to a few other hunters we came across who also noted lack of activity anywhere as they walked some of the dirt roads.

Lotsa sign, but no aminals to shoot. Not sure where to go for bear, this is my first year so still figuring it all out. Probably gonna try lower elevations without snow next.
