Hi all,
My name is Scott Shively, I coordinate wildlife field surveys for the non-profit Cascades Carnivore Project.
I'm putting a call out for elk heads to bait our wolverine camera stations this fall and winter. Please get in touch with me if you have cow or spike heads you are willing to donate to wolverine conservation research. I am located in Naches, WA but we have folks that can collect in Cle Elum, and Trout Lake as well. We hold a valid scientific collection permit through WDFW and also collect beaver carcasses from trappers as well as harvest roadkill deer/elk.
See below and attached flyer for contact info and feel free to share.
Please visit our website: www.cascadescarnivore.org to learn more about our research projects and if you have questions feel free to email myself or our research director, Dr. Jocelyn Akins, at cascadescarnivore@gmail.com.
Thank you for your time,
Scott

It’s a pretty cool animal !

If I am blessed enough to acquire an elk head next week, it's all yours. I'm in Naches as well so hope to see you around.

What's your groups stance on reintroducing Grizzlies in the North Cascades? I don't see any mention of grizz when I research your website. Big topic here these days......

I put that question to him earlier this year and he wouldnt respond to it. Read this thread. To me, his ignoring the question speaks volumes. https://hunting-washington.com/smf/index.php/topic,236368.msg3157714.html#msg3157714
Theyre partnered with conservation northwest, the group that bought ad space on facebook to get anti hunters to send in canned emails opposing wolf management.

Keep up the cool work Scott. I've had a chance to talk with the folks camera trapping in the Methow and it's very interesting stuff.

A buddy of mine who is also a member had a wolverine in the Glacier Peak Wilderness attack a bear that he had just shot. unfortunately they didn't get any pics because they were trying to keep it from attacking the bear. this was 5-6 years ago

Most likely Scott isn’t able to take that question. That question probably needs to be directed to an administrator.

I helped Scott out last year and am doing it again this year his involvement is for Wolverine and cascade fox
He’s a good guy and some of the pics from cameras are pretty cool

Can you test all the heads for CWD while you are at it? Seems like a good opportunity to help prevent the spread.

Awesome, thanks yakimanoob, good luck out there! Likewise, drop me a line sometime regardless!

Hi MtnMuley and Bango,
CCP’s research is focused on mid-sized carnivores. We target Cascade red fox, wolverine and fisher with our camera stations but collect incidental data on marten, coyote, bobcat and Canada lynx. We have no involvement with the topic of Grizzly reintroduction. If you have any questions or would like to chat about that topic please feel free to email our Research Director, Jocelyn Akins.

Scott,
Can you take Idaho heads? Already capped my elk skull from this year but may have one or two cow heads available in December.

Thanks O. Nerka, there are a lot of great folks up there and some neat work being done! Doesn't it make the Cascades feel more wild knowing wolverines are running around out there? :IBCOOL:

Jason, holy cow what a crazy thing to witness, that is an awesome story! They are such scrappy animals and very opportunistic, not surprising one would attack a wounded bear, as crazy as that sounds. Check out this video a hiker captured last summer near Glacier Peak, so cool. Impossible to say for sure but could very well be a mother and a young of year kit traveling together:
Thanks Jake! Hope you guys had a successful rest of your hunt.

Hi dreamingbig, We don't have the capacity to do any testing but I'd imagine the state is testing for CWD? I know Oregon DFW is working hard to test for it.
-
Why would we encourage brain matter to be transported around the state without knowing if it was CWD positive? For example you can’t bring heads back from MT?

CWD testing doesn’t tell if the animal has it or not. Only if it is detected or not.
The few comments in the regs aren’t preventing transport from other states. Folks are still hauling in game, butchering, and then dumping scraps outdoors. There is no enforcement or checking.
States can’t do what would have to be done to stop the spread. To do so would all but end hunting as we know it.
We’d all be traveling to hunt just antelope and maybe pigs.
