Title: Mule deer or whitetail
Post by: baldopepper on November 01, 2019, 12:22:55 PM
Late hunt coming up in our unit 121 so PEASE make sure you and those hunting with you know the difference. Last year I came across two different small mule deer bucks that were shot during the late whitetail only hunt. Stopped another young Hunter who was putting a sneak on a mulie buck not far off the road.  When I asked if he knew it was a mule deer he only responded with a "oh, it is?" Lot of small mulie bucks down around hwy 25 right now, so make sure you and those you're with know what they're shooting at.

From my experience hunting turkey around Kettle falls north on 25.  I am in a lot more white trail than mule deer.  Driving on 25 it seems today the spokane river seems to me a split between the 2.  Traveling on 25 i have seen more white tail than mule deer north of the Spokane river and south of the river I have seen nothing but mule deer.

I think the ratio is different.  Mule deer herd around my place has done very well the last few years while the whitetails seemed to have steadily declined. I think the doe hunt restriction this year will help, seemed to be less hunters around for the early hunt.  Deer seem to be still pretty much in their summer areas and I've seen no sign of the rut yet. Colder weather does seem to have them moving more during the day and coming out earlier. Bank fishing on the lake has been red hot if you want to kill some time. Turkeys are everywhere with some huge flocks around.
