Title: How to ship a rifle
Post by: lazydrifter on April 03, 2009, 06:06:04 PM: I've got a guy from out of state that wants to trade me some reloading dies, casings and lead for an old jap 7.7 rifle that I have. Anybody know what I need to do to ship this? Do I get a copy of signed FFL and copy of Drivers License and then ship to FFL address. Then do I keep copy of FFL and DL or put them in the box with the rifle and do I need to inclose a copy of my Drivers License. Thanks

Post by: Jason on April 03, 2009, 06:32:03 PM: I had a guy from Cali wanting to buy A gun from me and ship it to him, so i called UPS and USPS and they both told me that only Dealers With an FFL can ship it to other dealers with an FFL.

The catch is, you need to make sure the buyer is using an FFL holder that agrees to accept from a private party---many won't (not sure why!?!?!).

I would definitely ask for a signed copy of their FFL (in ink, though a fax is "acceptable").

It's easy just to go to a shop that will ship for you. Bring a copy of the FFL it's going to or bring contact info and they can set it up by e-mail or fax. That way it's all done right with no worries. I just shipped one and it was easy other than it took forever for the recieving FFL to fax over his info thats why you should get it before hand.

I believe a copy of the sending FFL goes with the rifle.

It cost me $25.00 for the transfer and $29.00 for shipping with $1300.00 ins through fedex.

This gun I don't think is worth 50.00. I would wind up having more into this than what the reloading stuff would cost if I went to the store. Thanks for the info. Now I know why I don't sell guns

Go to this sight, https://www.atfonline.gov/fflezcheck/fflSearchDisplay.do , follow the instructions to make sure the FFL is legit, C&R is different. Box and ship your package through USPS or UPS, I use USPS. I do all my shipping online, I pay for the postage and print it out. Walk it into your post office and hand it to them. Go home and watch TV.

Make sure the package is sent with NO ammunition, if it is the receiving FFL is legally obliged to call the BATF and you will have a knock on your door. Only send it with adult signature, if you do not some idiot post man will leave it on the back door. Make sure the FFL has a contact name to call. You can do it the exact same way through UPS, I just use USPS because the PO is a 30 second drive from my house and the UPS is 20 minutes. Insurance is your option with USPS, buy why take the chance.

USPS requires that you bring the box in to have the post master check it to make sure it is unloaded. I do not do that, I do not want anyone to know what I am shipping. You cannot purchase shipping from one of the UPS stores, the stores all over the place, they are NOT UPS, they just bought the naming rights, they will not ship ammo or firearms through them, they do not check if you just walk in and drop off a package, however ;)

It is very easy, I do it a lot. Once you figure out the basic laws it is super easy, just like shipping a car part.
