10 days to go. Would you?
-
I
-
No one can answer that for you.
Personally no.
I would take the extra 10 days of hunting.
-
There are a lot bigger out there but he is a decent buck anyone would be proud of.
-
If that’s all the quality you are seeing, me probably
-
Not yet.
-
Doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. It only matters what you think. Why bother asking? Not trying to be antagonizing, but I think you're stressing and overthinking it, and don't think you're clear about what matters in a hunt. Good luck to you!
-
Lots of factors that aren't included but I am sure you have all the information to make the decision. Only you can decide.
Depending on area, how many years it took me to draw and what I have seen during scouting I may or may not shoot that one.
General season? Any day all day. But this is a special permit and just not enough information for me to say what I would do.
Good luck with your decision.
-
Thats a really nice Hybred, curious what unit he is in?
-
A buck like that is actually pretty good for what most quality permit holders kill in this state, however with the time left I'd pass.
-

Yes indeed all about the unit.

:yeah: but.....if you would shoot that buck on the last day I would shoot him now. You never know what is going to happen. Rut was just starting to get going this last week around my place but when it's over it gets way tougher. If it's all about the hunt I would keep hunting and enjoy it. If you would shoot that buck on the last day I would shoot him today because there is no sure thing of seeing him again or a bigger one.
-
I probably would. Then I’d regret it! Late permits are a time to go big or nothing.

Curious, what makes you think hybrid? Looks 100% mule deer to me

It would be interesting to get a better look at his tail. Looks like it has a black stripe indicative of a hybrid.
-
If he was close to the truck, I’d dust his azz.
-
Play it out, enjoy the season. Don't pull the trigger just yet.
-
looks like a nice 100% muley depends what your seeing, if I went two days and didn't see anything then saw him, my season would be over
-
I think his season started today.
-
on the first day id pass on it....
then 2 seconds late would change my mind and take him :chuckle:
-

Scrapperdude
Take a look at the first pic, he definitely has some Blacktail in him. Look at the black stripe down the tail

3nails has it right. The stripe on the tail. Muledeer have a black tip, Blacktail have an all black tail and Hybrids have different variations between the 2. Crossbreeds are a lot like people. 5 kids in a family, some look more like dad and some look more like mom. Ive hunted bench bucks all my life and they all have different characteristics but the tail is a sure give a way
-
You people have a LOT more patience and confidence than I do.
I'd shoot that buck in the first 20 seconds of legal shooting time.
-
Depends on the unit. Wenatchee or Methow Valleys I’d be passing.
-

This is simplistic, and depends what you mean by "hybrid." There is plenty of potential for small genetic variation to produce the tail seen here in a mule deer who doesn't have any blacktail in their ancestry for generations. Similarly, it is possible that this deer has a great-great-great something that was a blacktail. But I strongly doubt that it had a parent that was a blacktail, and there is nothing about this tail coloration which requires that as an explanation.

Lots of Muleys have a slight stripe on their tails, not at all uncommon.
-
What ever you boys say but to me its got some Blacktail in it. Just for fun, find me a pick of a Muley with any type of stripe from lets say from Idaho, Utah, Colorado. Montana ect where there is no chance of cross breeding. Not argueing, I have just hunted crossbreeds for 40 years and have seen pure Blacktails as far west as the Yakima River canyon and quite a ways down the Naches.
Maybe Doug will chime in
-
I doubt anybody would argue that there are blacktail influences on east cascade slopes. Doesnt mean one of his parents was a blacktail per se
-
Also, I'd like to think I'd wait until "Full Send Friday" before shooting that buck but it would depend what else I was seeing
-
Send one!!
-
I wasn't saying one of his parents were Blacktail, just that he has Blacktail in him. The parent reference was just stating that they take on different parts of each species. I have seen twin fawns that showed different amounts of Muledeer/Blacktail in both of them
-
depends on the permit!
-
All depends on the unit . If that's a late season tag around my area it's dead. Entiat , Methow , Firing Center I would hold out , then regret it later . :chuckle:

If you wait 15+ years for a Wenatchee Valley or Methow Valley quality tag, that buck is never considered...IMO...even on the last day. :twocents:
There are plenty of “buck tags” that will produce a good hunt where you can find bucks like that.
Everyone has their opinion of what a “quality buck” is, and too each their own. But if you are looking for a true “quality” buck, you have to be willing to pass bucks like this and maybe eat your tag...if you are going to find one of those special bucks you see guys post every year. :dunno:
As far as blacktail highbred, um no!
-
I'm not shooting....
......yet.
-
He'd be in the back of my Truck already if I had the tag.
-
With that much time left no way, how often do you get to hunt the mule deer rut here?! I’d be enjoying the next week and a half out hunting :twocents:

I ended up with a buck like that on my 9th day of hunting last year. I was excited about it but it wasn't the buck I had hoped for. I passed on a buck like that on day 3 and day 5-6 found a big one that I blew it on. I also saw some crazy buck fights, breeding, watched deer for 9 days and I wouldn't have had any of that if I shot a smaller buck earlier.
Its about the unit plus what you want to get out of it
-

You would be wrong on all of what you said, - except it does only matter what I think.
It was just a question, lighten up. :twocents:
-
FWIW, no I did not shoot it, but sure thought about it. I can find him again if need be. And no it is not BT related, 100% Muley.
-
Send one!!
Agreed!
-
Archery probably yes
Rifle and muzzleloader no.
But you have to be willing to eat a tag too.
-
Wait for a beast or eat the tag... my :twocents:

Sorry man it's always hard to get tone across on a forum post. I was trying to convey a sense of support for however you called it, not a "don't bother us with your questions" kind of attitude. Glad you're enjoying the tag.

No worries it’s all good. Just fired me up when ya said something about you didn’t think I knew what I wanted out of this hunt. I do exactly, getting to hunt during the rut, very few people, being able to pick and choose, that’s what it’s all about for me. Quality hunting, not quality killing..... But yeah I do want to do that too :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

I would congratulate you if you killed him, and I'm happy you passed with plenty of hunting left. I don't agree with don't pass on the first day what you would shoot on the last; I've done many hunts where I passed "better" bucks and was completely happy ending my hunt with a meat deer. Wring every drop of enjoyment out of that rare quality rut experience, I guarantee that you will enjoy every memory of the hunt and remember every buck you considered shooting when you look at that rack for the rest of your life, whether it's a masher or a fat little forky.

That's a great perspective that I hadn't thought of. Pass on day one, enjoy every minute of the hunt and fill the tag on the last day with whatever is available. Great experience, great memories and meat in the freezer at the end. Thanks for pointing that out. I had never thought of it that way.
-
Definitely pass. As hard as those tags are to get, I might pass that guy on the last day and go without getting a buck. When I've been on those hunts, it hasn't been hard to find a legal buck. If I were going to settle, I'd be just as happy shooting a small buck on the last day.

This is my plan, and having a blast.
I’m not seeing the quantity of bigger bucks like I thought I would, but I’m also not seeing a gigantic pumpkin patch.
-
Part of the fun is the quality of the hunt. You know the big one is there, rutting, and may turn up at any moment. Most hunts aren't like that.
-
Hang in there....you will find a big boy.
-
I've never killed a decent, classic 4pt. Pretty sure he would be toast!
-
Me either...….but this is prolly my last chance at a quality permit that I can put the effort needed into it (getting older sucks) So holding out for better for now. Starting the 18th he is a shooter.

:yeah:
But if I saw a masher two point, it’s all over.🤣

THIS quote sums it up for me!! I've hunted all or some part of 11 of the last 13 days, and I have the remainder of the season off (open through 11/20) for Mission rifle. I haven't seen a buck that has even excited me YET, but Istill have hope! Plus, I've been having an absolute BLAST (I should be after 22 years of applying)! Leaving early and getting home late, planning my next day, etc. I sure wish the weather would cooperate more, but it's still all good. IF I'm down to the last day I might shoot a meat buck close to town late in the afternoon, but it'll be a dink! I won't even shoot a "decent" buck, it'll be a dumb one that will probably get hit by a car anyhow. That's my theory anyway, why kill a buck that's survived 3.5-4.5 years just to settle for a "decent" one that would be tossed on the horn pile on the porch at my place, when I can shoot a tender one to eat?
I'm not judging, "To each their own". Have a great rest of your hunt fellas!
