My oldest Boy is a Marine over in whatever hell hole they send the elite guys to do their work. He can't talk about it or where it is, but He's finally coming home just before Christmas. My Wife and I want to pull a fast one on him and only have him unwrap a few small nothing special (most likely clothes, socks, and underwear) gifts. Then surprise him after He thinks he's gotten the shaft. I will come down the hall a few minutes later with His new hunting rifle. I want it to be something special that He remembers forever and carries with him in the hunting woods for life. Help Me pick it out
Here is the best I can give everyone for help on what would make him happy.
P.S. I'm not rich just a regular guy so please don't put up rifles over $1500 range.
#1 He loves My Browning X-bolt because it's weight is close to nothing.
#2 He wants something bigger that the .270 He has had for years.
#3 He hates that the Remington 270 he has doesn't have a clip and you have to unload the rounds one at a time.
#4 He's a good shot now that the Marine Corp has kicked his ass a bit. I still smoke him at long distance. (that pisses him off, LOL). Point is I am sure He will want to shoot 500 Yards +
#6 I know He wants Iron sights with his rifle and that's the reason I don't just get him a nice X-bolt.
#7 I would like an all around caliber that can be used for Elk, Bear, and Deer. (changing bullet weights of course) I shoot a .30-06 Model 760 or X-bolt depending on the weather.
#8 our family (grandpa, uncles, and great grand pa) traditionaly have shot .30-06, 270, 7mm Rem Mag.
#9 I prefer stainless but it's not a deal breaker.
So I need caliber suggestions, and rifle options. I appreciate any and all input.
Thank You Hunt Washington members.

My suggestion would be to give him YOUR x-bolt. Seriously. Favorite gun in my safe is a beater .22 from a family member. Just how I see it. He can buy himself whatever rifle he wants when he gets out. Except for yours. I dont know him or you, but I would bet all my guns that Its the one gun he’ll want when you are gone. Good luck!
-
I know you said stainless...but a nice pre 64 model 70 featherweight 3006 can be had in that price range with open sights

My dream rifle was the Browning BAR (safari) model. I finally got one in 30-06 cal. I love it.
-
Find a clean used Remington Model 700, get a carbon barrel from Hells Canyon Armory, maybe a decent aftermarket stock and have a semi custom built. :dunno:
-
My Dad got a Tikka T3 Lite in 7mm Rem. Magnum a few years back. He bought it because it is inexpensive, and light. He's always said, "you pack 'em alot more than you shoot 'em". Using the load he had worked up for his other 7mm, and with no barrel break- in, and stock rings, it shot a .27" group. He said that, including his time on the rifle team in the military, that's the best group he's ever shot in his life. (Of course I had to buy one too, but mine will shoot 1/2" moa...no better). If you are looking for a no frills rifle that shoots well, give them a look.
-
You really limited yourself with two requirements.....1. 500+ yards and 2. Iron sights. Most modern rifles that are chambered in calibers for 500 yard shots do not come with iron sights.
If you want iron sights I would vote Savage Brush Hunter in .338 win mag.
https://www.savagearms.com/content?p=firearms&a=product_summary&s=57044
If you can forgo the iron sights looking for a longer range caliber I would vote Savage 110 high country in 300 win mag

I count the firearms my father has given me among my most prized possessions...
Can a good Smith add iron sites to a rifle?

Was hoping the CZ 550 safari Magnum came in the small stuff, but they all start at 375 HH and up. Great rifles but 375HH is a bit much for the states, and they are heavy rifles.
I did a search on Gunbroker for ideas. Looked for "7mm Rem Mag open sights"
couple that looked interesting:
https://www.gunbroker.com/item/844085709
https://www.gunbroker.com/item/844746222
Could do a similar search in other cartridges that would be acceptable and see what pops up.

Browning Hells Canyon Speed - I bought one for my son in 300 WSM and he liked it so well I bought the same gun in 270 WSM for myself. Less than 7 pounds, drop mag, three lug bolt and factory muzzle brake. Everything you're looking for. I bought mine through Sportsman's Warehouse and I think paid around $925.00 - with your budget you could top that with a nice mid-grade scope and really set him up.
-
I did not see a price listed, So I would go with Sako Finnlight, in 300 Win mag.
https://www.sako.fi/en-us/rifles/sako-85/85-finnlight#technical_specifications
I have two (65 and 85), incredible rifles, tack drivers you will not be disappointed with.
-
im looking at getting this one. https://www.sportsmans.com/shooting-gear-gun-supplies/rifles/tikka-t3x-superlite-rifle/p/p46876 wont find a lighter better shooting gun out of the box. Leaves you with more cash for a scope
-
Another vote (2) for the Browning Safari either 30/06 or .300wm.
I own the .300wm and love it. It’s my wetside brush gun for anything.
Open sights, super accurate, look though scope mounts, glass of choice for sniping and there you go.
Or your X Bolt, which may be more endearing,
but he’ll own that one, some day, anyhow right?

Big gun for big boy is Ruger Guide gun in 375 RCM :)
-
You can’t go wrong with the Tikka rifles. Really reasonable priced and excellent shooters. The 300 win mag is the all around caliber IMO. You can go fairly light bullet weight or heavy with good ballistics. I love your idea of surprising your son with a new rifle.

great choice, t3x hunter comes with open sights, 300 win mag and detachable box magazine.
hard to find that combination without going into the dangerous game models

So much info. Thanks to everyone.
I agree it's hard if not impossible to find everything He would want. I think I will have to accept letting the iron sights go.
At this point I'm impressed by the savage 110 high country and the x-bolt hells canyon.
I agree he's not a boy anymore, LOL. That being said he's still young and I think the look of those two guns would have a bit of a flash wow factor I'm looking for in a special gift.
I'm not against the Tika but would like to put all three of the guns in My hands and check them out.
As for giving him MY x-bolt
#1 I have more than one boy that hunts and I could see some hurt feelings from the other boys.
#2 The boys will all end up with the guns when My time here ends.
#3 The big one My Wife would be convinced that I was just trying to get an excuse to buy a new more expensive rifle. And She would be correct. LOL
So Now that I have it narrowed down to three possible rifles I need to chose the caliber.
I like both the 7mm rem Mag and the 300 win mag. My Son and I have talked about the 300 Rum a few times and how I have never shot one and would like to. So that's also an option.
I'd like to ask for some pro's and con's of each caliber. I'm open to opinions also.
Thanks to all that have taken the time to pass along their recommendations. I appreciate it.

X-bolt 300 wsm will take deer / elk to 700 yards and is light and moderate recoil with the brake. Put on turret scope.
-
I personally have settled on the 7mm for my go-to rifle. big enough for everything in North America - moose might be a stretch...
Good ballistics/flat shooting with moderate recoil.
300 WM is good too.
I started with a 300WM on my go-to rifle and had it re-barreled to 7mm RM.
either are solid choices.

My $.02 - I have owned many of the rifles and calibers mentioned and the 'right' rifle/caliber is always a personal thing. Either of the three you are considering are great choices. Being a sort of Browning 'guy' I would lean that way but my Tikka 30-06 is my go-to for most everything nowadays. On calibers (and I know I might get in some hot water for the 7RM lovers out here (there are many).... My main point would be that if 7mmRM is your choice it is a great caliber. However, you can do most anything with an ottsix ballistically you can do with the 7RM plus you have all the range of bullet weights afforded the 30 caliber versus 7mm (but 140gr in 7RM are nasty). And for long range shooting you may want to have all those projectile options. So having said THAT, I would go for ottsix or .300WM and chose the rifle you think your son would most love. Hope it helps. This would cover any hunting in North America and most any long range shooting practce using your hunting rifle as your platform.

Here's another option on open sights
https://www.newenglandcustomgun.com/sight-and-scope-mounting.php
buy the perfect gun without iron sights then have them added on, opens up a ton of options. Then you can get a quick release scope mount setup, or shoot through scope rings.
The problem with this is he'll have to really crunch his cheek weld to see through the scope rings to use the iron sights, or he'll have to hold his cheek up high to use the scope. Or remove a cheek pad? Or get quick adjustable stock?
Most stocks are designed with a higher cheek comb for scopes since they quit coming with iron sights. I have an old interarms mark x that has a low cheek comb and came with open sights, I might just put those sights back on and make it open sights only hrmm

My tikka ottsix is my bread and butter gun, it just gets it done and I can find a box of ammo at just about anywhere and it'll shoot it just fine day in and day out. If I could only have *one* gun, it would be this. It ain't sexy, it ain't modern, it doesn't scream look at me!
but it puts animals down

Just gonna throw this out there.
My buddy who shoots a $7500 gun scope combo bought a 6.5 Ruger american and scoped it up.
It shoots as good as his custom gun. (bullets in same hole basically)
His buddy bought one..............................same result.
His buddy bought one..............................same result.
Cheap, durable, etc.
-
Add one more to that list of 6.5 Creed on a Ruger American Predator that shoots sub MOA with anything it is fed...
-
Pretty hard to come up with a rifle that meets all your criteria. Personally based off your description of his likes & wants, I’d get a X-bolt HCLR or MaxLR in a 7 mag or one of the 30’s offered. If you want something with the capability to build on in the future but light & accurate, get a Tikka. :twocents:
-
Savage 110 bear Hunter comes to mind. 300wsm should do it
-
One more thing to consider that hasn't been mentioned, and I don't know if it matters to your son or not, but I'm thinking since he's a Marine maybe it does. The Savage High Country you're looking at is made in America, the Browning is not. Now I have nothing against Browning, my primary rifle that I've hunted for the last 22 years is a Browning A Bolt. But if I had it do over again I'd buy American made if I could. Savage makes a great rifle and they're known for their accuracy. That's what I'd go with. Cartridge doesn't really matter much, it's just personal preference. In the High Country I'd suggest looking at a non magnum, just because it is a relatively heavy rifle and the magnums are listed at almost a half pound heavier than the standard cartridges. I'd be really tempted to go with the 280 Ackley Improved. Ballistics nearly as good as the 7mm Remington Magnum, with less recoil, and another advantage being the magazine holds 4 instead of only 3. Or you could go with 7/08 Rem., 308 Win., or the 30/06, ALL good cartridges. But just to be different I'd seriously consider the 280 Ackley.

Went to Cabela’s on the way to Deer camp last night. Put my hands on several guns.
Pulled the trigger on the savage 110 high country in 7mm Remington Magnum.
I tried to pick it apart and the only thing I wasn’t 100% on was weight but in a magnum the weight ticks up on all of them.
The made in the USA got me.
I also picked him up a nice $200 hard shell double gun case to go with it.
I think he will be happy with it.
Solid gun
Wow factor look
Great caliber
Bonus gift of hard case $200
Made in the USA
Very reasonable price $800 after rebate
I think I made a good decision
Time will tell
I’ll update this when he receives it and when We try it out.
I’m excited to see what scope he picks
Thanks to all that helped with the selection options

I came home from overseas around this time of year after being gone for a year and the best gift I got was a sympathetic ear from my friends parents. They would not let leave until I told them what had happened to me. After that I was able to sleep in a real bed again and the nightmares ceased.

Still not sure why I am supposed to spend thousands of dollars on a rifle.

I know you said stainless...but a nice pre 64 model 70 featherweight 3006 can be had in that price range with open sights
:yeah: You said "something he'll remember forever". A new tika, rem, x-bolt, whatever, isn't memorable in anyway. They're just decent workhorses. If you want to get him something special, get him what is universally understood as the best hunting rifle ever made. There will be naysayers in the forum, but look up any "best hunting rifle ever" article written, and 99.9% of the time, you're gonna see a pre-64 model 70. pre-64 in 30-06 is what hatchcock used in Nam. They're well known for being extremely accurate and well built out of the box. The one I got from my G'Pa is what I use, and it's one of the most prized items I own. Once he understands what you got him, he'll understand it is something special. Get in 06 or .300 WM.

My first deer riffle was a savage model 110 .270, I loved that gun and ended up shooting my first deer with it. I now use a tikka t3 lite in 7mm mag and aboslutley love that gun. I managed to knock down 2 deer with it this year alone. A couple years ago, my family got my dad a tikka .300 winmag for Christmas and he is absolutely in love with that gun. from my experience, you can't go wrong with a savage 110, remington 700, tikka t3, browning xbolt or a ruger m77. I am sure your son will be happy with anything he gets from his parents. have a merry Christmas!
-
I am zero help on picking a rifle...shotguns are another thing. I just wanted to extend a big thank you and happy holidays to your son for his service...and to you and your wife as parents. My holidays are happier because of people like him. Enjoy your time together...he will love whatever you decide on because of who it is from not for what it is

I gave my oldest son a shotgun years back, (SBE first gen). He was deployed most of this year and i retrieved from his wife to refurb/resto with cerekote, stock camo and internals. I bet he keeps this forever!

I appreciate all the kind words. We are very proud of him and can't wait to have him home even if only for a short while.
I gotta say I really miss having him with Me on hunting days. Started him out when He was 11 just walking behind Me taking it all in. He got access to facebook at some point during the late hunt last weekend. He made several comments about how much he was jealous of his little brother getting to hunt with Me this year. I'm telling you I soaked up and appreciated My hunting season with My middle boy Carson this year (Senior in Highschool). Having the oldest gone for a couple seasons now has made me realize what I have now with My middle one and what I miss about not having the oldest around.
I know it's selfish but I look forward to him coming home and returning to our little hunting group once his time in the Marine corp in finished.
Enough with the sappy stuff. Next question for the guys who have been helping. I know he's going to ask Me what scope I suggest once He gets to receive the new rifle. What are Your recommendations?

Nightforce or Leupold would be my two choices. In the nightforce scope I would go with the SHV model which is really affordable and will last a lifetime. I have 3 of them and couldn't be happier. Given the rifle you purchased, I would lean towards the 4-14x56 or 5-20x56 with MOAR reticle. I have two illuminate and one non illuminated and I would not spend the money on the illuminated again. The glass is good enough that illuminated is not necessary in my hunting scenarios. I was and still am, a leupold fan. I own many leupold scopes and love them. For the money of their higher end scopes, I would purchase the nightforce first.

There is a NF in classifieds that I believe just had a hundred dollar price drop.

I prefer first focal plane scopes. I'm using a Vortex Razor AMG currently and really like that scope, but they're spendy. Two others that I like are the Nightforce SHV F1, in a 4-14x50 I've seen them new for $1,290; the other is a Burris XTR II 4-20x50 for around $960. If you don't want first focal plane or that much money spent, look at the Leupold Vx3i or Vortex Viper options.

Not the same but similar, Bear with me long story. Few years back I drew a late tag for mule deer but I still had my brother couple good buddies and my 15 year old that I planned to pack in horse back to our favorite spot for general season. Well took some convincing and a little sacrifice to get my 15 year old to want to go, at the time with football and all the girls chasing him he just wasn't sure he wanted to miss any of it for a weekend trip into the wilderness with the guys. Well the time was getting near so I asked one last time! Getting packed up you going or what? Well you See I bought a new Browning X bolt just due to this tag I drew that summer and put a nice Zeiss on it. My boy was using a rem 7600 pump at the time and of coarse he ask Dad since your just going along for the ride what would you say to me using that nice new shiny rifle you bought this summer!! I instantly replied heck yeah and would give up way more then a $1600 Rifle to spend the weekend hunting with my youngest son who is growing so fast. Well as we get camp set up one of my buddies says hey corbin how the heck did you get out of the house with your dads new rifle?? Of coarse he explained to the guys some one that could really hunt should prolly use it any way. ha ha. So as the guys laughed and threw a few more jokes at me I suddenly replied, Tell you what corb and these guys are your witness. You kill a buck tomorrow and tomorrow only with that rifle and its yours!!! Guess what? I had to borrow my rifle from my son for my late tag ha ha. Short time later bought a new one. With that said I believe the first response you got here was to give up your rifle? I have a similar experience with what that means not only to my son but to myself as well. I could recite to you the entire week leading up to that weekend the hunt we were on and the memory of everything to do with that rifle since. I would agree with who ever made that suggestion that that rifle of yours would mean more to your boy then any others that could be bought. Thank him for his service from the rest of us as well please and have a great Xmas.

Thank you.
I enjoyed reading that very much.
Can’t wait to see him soon.
His flight lands on the 20th.

I too have an xbolt 06 that I really love. Left handed hunter, wood stock. I picked up a Zeiss 3x9 Conquest that was on sale the day I bought the rifle. I added a Pelican 1750 case and a Nikon rangefinder and got out of Sportsmans Warehouse for $1650. Had the setup for ten years maybe? Best gun purchase I've made. Shoots like a dream. Still love 30-06, best hunting cartridge ever.

I have to admit the .30-06 is an exceptional round. I would love to say that it has never failed me but...…
The Year I won the Washinton hunting lottery and Drew both the Peaches any Bull rifle tag and Peaches cow rifle tag it let Me down. Not the X-bolt, but the model 760. I honestly still have PTSD from it. Seriously
I had a large group of Elk on the other side of a valley at about 360 yards and could not connect. I shot 7 rounds stopping because I saw what I thought was the bull I had been targeting go down. It had dropped over a small ledge into the brush instead. I spent the next two days of that OIL (in My opinion) tag searching for blood gridding the entire area with My Dad. only to find that I had not connected. Now I would like to blame the gun or My shooting skills but My father was laying on the ground 10 feet to my right with the same tag shooting at a bull 70 yards to the right of the giant I was trying to kill. He was also shooting a .30-06 in a bolt action Winchester model 70? not 100% sure on the rifle model as He purchased it just for this special hunt and it has never come out of the gun safe since.
He is a very good shot in My opinion as I feel I am. two days searching and same result Zero bulls hit. Both of us are long time bow hunters so tracking animals and blood I would consider us both to be experts. Zero blood. as an additional note I ranged the distance later in the week and 360 was the number. A very nice hunting guide that We spoke to about the experience said that thermals when shooting across a valley like that can throw off your shot by quite a bit. I have no idea if His intent was to make us feel better or if there is any truth to the statement but I still wonder today if I was carrying a 7mm rem mag could it have made the difference.
ok to wrap up this long long (sorry) story. neither of us punched our tags that hunt (11 days?), at the time I went home completely discussed with Myself (even though I hunted HARD the entire time), years later I look back at it as one of My fondest memories with My Dad. Me and Dad getting up for 11 days strait going to work together spending the entire day together hunting like We did when I was 12. It's a priceless memory and I wouldn't change it for the world. I had a few other opportunities during the hunt but My bow instincts took over a bit and I would try to close the gap as apposed to take a longer shot like We had done earlier.
My uncle and grand father have used the 7mm rem mag for longer than I have been alive. long shots and dropped many an elk.

If you can't connect at 360 yards with a 30-06, it's almost certain that a 7 mm rem mag would have missed as well. Not a whole lot of difference at that range. :twocents: :twocents:

I wonder if this is ballisticly factual or just common opinion?

30.06 180gr 2800 fps b/c .507 dead on 100 yards roughly 22" low at 360 yards
7mag 160gr 3050 fps b/c .531 dead on 100 yards roughly 17.5" low at 360 yards

Lots of variables though...

This is interesting? I feel Like I should have asked this info earlier.
How much does cross wind affect the same bullet?

And if you zero at 200 yards the difference in drop at 360 yards would be even less.

A 10 mph side wind on the 30.06, point of impact is off close to 10 inches at 360 yards

I hate to be a hater here, but the miss was on you not having enough rounds at that distance, in varying conditions, with that caliber. I use 06, and regularly punch black on standard rifle targets round after round after round at 400yds. The 06 was used as the primary sniper round for ~75 years in the military first with the Springfield, and then with the M70 Winchester. Only reason I put this out there, is to encourage folks to get to out and practice, in lots of conditions with the same rifle, over and over. your story is a good lesson as to why.
That said, most important part is that these years later you have the awesome memory of getting out with your dad and going hard for 11 days. That's really what it's all about. Relish the memory.

I can honestly say that this is a true statement. I only practiced shooting out to two hundred yards at that point of my rifle hunting career.
Many years as a bow hunter with only a few years of rifle experiance at that stage.

Kids home, He seems to be in good spirits from what I can tell.
I think He's really going to like his gift based on the fact We have been talking about how He wants to get a new hunting rifle when He gets out and is home for good. He has mentioned the 7mm mag more than once so that's a good sign. no scary stories or anything for that matter. Just says he was someplace that is real sandy and hot as you can possibly imagine.
Stupid mother in law asks him if anyone didn't make it back from his team within the first 3 hours of him being home. :dunno:
He says there is nothing to talk about and to leave it be.
I figure if He wants to talk about it He knows very well that I'm here and ready to listen. I see no reason to bring it up or push him to talk about it.
I've been focused on talking about fun stuff like hunting, the Seahawks, girls, and guns.
Lots of talk about his future plans and that He's going to be home for good next October.
I told him to let Me know when He knows for sure and I will put all those points I have been buying him after something special.
He seems very excited about us giving Bear hunting a try. Says He will need a new rifle :chuckle:.
I'll keep you guys updated on how the gift delivery goes. I'm pretty excited to hand it over and see his face. should be a memorable moment.

As for scopes, Leupold VX3i 3.5x10x40 with maybe the cds would be the way I would go, great scope and also made in the USA. Glad your son made it home safe and sound and have a great Christmas. You made the right choice on the rifle.
