Here is the best I can give everyone for help on what would make him happy.
P.S. I'm not rich just a regular guy so please don't put up rifles over $1500 range.
#1 He loves My Browning X-bolt because it's weight is close to nothing.
#2 He wants something bigger that the .270 He has had for years.
#3 He hates that the Remington 270 he has doesn't have a clip and you have to unload the rounds one at a time.
#4 He's a good shot now that the Marine Corp has kicked his ass a bit. I still smoke him at long distance. (that pisses him off, LOL). Point is I am sure He will want to shoot 500 Yards +
#6 I know He wants Iron sights with his rifle and that's the reason I don't just get him a nice X-bolt.
#7 I would like an all around caliber that can be used for Elk, Bear, and Deer. (changing bullet weights of course) I shoot a .30-06 Model 760 or X-bolt depending on the weather.
#8 our family (grandpa, uncles, and great grand pa) traditionaly have shot .30-06, 270, 7mm Rem Mag.
#9 I prefer stainless but it's not a deal breaker.
So I need caliber suggestions, and rifle options. I appreciate any and all input.

My suggestion would be to give him YOUR x-bolt. Seriously. Favorite gun in my safe is a beater .22 from a family member. Just how I see it. He can buy himself whatever rifle he wants when he gets out. Except for yours. I dont know him or you, but I would bet all my guns that Its the one gun he’ll want when you are gone. Good luck!

I own the .300wm and love it. It’s my wetside brush gun for anything.
Open sights, super accurate, look though scope mounts, glass of choice for sniping and there you go.
Or your X Bolt, which may be more endearing,

You can’t go wrong with the Tikka rifles. Really reasonable priced and excellent shooters. The 300 win mag is the all around caliber IMO. You can go fairly light bullet weight or heavy with good ballistics. I love your idea of surprising your son with a new rifle. :tup:
great choice, t3x hunter comes with open sights, 300 win mag and detachable box magazine.
hard to find that combination without going into the dangerous game models

I agree he's not a boy anymore, LOL. That being said he's still young and I think the look of those two guns would have a bit of a flash wow factor I'm looking for in a special gift.
I'm not against the Tika but would like to put all three of the guns in My hands and check them out.
As for giving him MY x-bolt
#1 I have more than one boy that hunts and I could see some hurt feelings from the other boys.
#2 The boys will all end up with the guns when My time here ends.
#3 The big one My Wife would be convinced that I was just trying to get an excuse to buy a new more expensive rifle. And She would be correct. LOL
So Now that I have it narrowed down to three possible rifles I need to chose the caliber.
I like both the 7mm rem Mag and the 300 win mag. My Son and I have talked about the 300 Rum a few times and how I have never shot one and would like to. So that's also an option.
I'd like to ask for some pro's and con's of each caliber. I'm open to opinions also.

Good ballistics/flat shooting with moderate recoil.
300 WM is good too.
I started with a 300WM on my go-to rifle and had it re-barreled to 7mm RM.

Browning Hells Canyon Speed - I bought one for my son in 300 WSM and he liked it so well I bought the same gun in 270 WSM for myself. Less than 7 pounds, drop mag, three lug bolt and factory muzzle brake. Everything you're looking for. I bought mine through Sportsman's Warehouse and I think paid around $925.00 - with your budget you could top that with a nice mid-grade scope and really set him up.

Being a sort of Browning 'guy' I would lean that way but my Tikka 30-06 is my go-to for most everything nowadays. On calibers (and I know I might get in some hot water for the 7RM lovers out here (there are many).... My main point would be that if 7mmRM is your choice it is a great caliber. However, you can do most anything with an ottsix ballistically you can do with the 7RM plus you have all the range of bullet weights afforded the 30 caliber versus 7mm (but 140gr in 7RM are nasty). And for long range shooting you may want to have all those projectile options. So having said THAT, I would go for ottsix or .300WM and chose the rifle you think your son would most love. Hope it helps. This would cover any hunting in North America and most any long range shooting practce using your hunting rifle as your platform.

buy the perfect gun without iron sights then have them added on, opens up a ton of options. Then you can get a quick release scope mount setup, or shoot through scope rings.
The problem with this is he'll have to really crunch his cheek weld to see through the scope rings to use the iron sights, or he'll have to hold his cheek up high to use the scope. Or remove a cheek pad? Or get quick adjustable stock?
Most stocks are designed with a higher cheek comb for scopes since they quit coming with iron sights. I have an old interarms mark x that has a low cheek comb and came with open sights, I might just put those sights back on and make it open sights only hrmm

My buddy who shoots a $7500 gun scope combo bought a 6.5 Ruger american and scoped it up.
It shoots as good as his custom gun. (bullets in same hole basically)
His buddy bought one..............................same result.

Went to Cabela’s on the way to Deer camp last night. Put my hands on several guns.
Pulled the trigger on the savage 110 high country in 7mm Remington Magnum.
I tried to pick it apart and the only thing I wasn’t 100% on was weight but in a magnum the weight ticks up on all of them.
The made in the USA got me.
I also picked him up a nice $200 hard shell double gun case to go with it.
I think he will be happy with it.

My Ruger American 7/08 shoots sub moa with mid price ammo. Same for a guy I know with one in 6.5.
I have a $200 scope on it.
Still not sure why I am supposed to spend thousands of dollars on a rifle.

A new tika, rem, x-bolt, whatever, isn't memorable in anyway. They're just decent workhorses. If you want to get him something special, get him what is universally understood as the best hunting rifle ever made. There will be naysayers in the forum, but look up any "best hunting rifle ever" article written, and 99.9% of the time, you're gonna see a pre-64 model 70. pre-64 in 30-06 is what hatchcock used in Nam. They're well known for being extremely accurate and well built out of the box. The one I got from my G'Pa is what I use, and it's one of the most prized items I own. Once he understands what you got him, he'll understand it is something special. Get in 06 or .300 WM.

I gave my oldest son a shotgun years back, (SBE first gen). He was deployed most of this year and i retrieved from his wife to refurb/resto with cerekote, stock camo and internals. I bet he keeps this forever!

I gotta say I really miss having him with Me on hunting days. Started him out when He was 11 just walking behind Me taking it all in. He got access to facebook at some point during the late hunt last weekend. He made several comments about how much he was jealous of his little brother getting to hunt with Me this year. I'm telling you I soaked up and appreciated My hunting season with My middle boy Carson this year (Senior in Highschool). Having the oldest gone for a couple seasons now has made me realize what I have now with My middle one and what I miss about not having the oldest around.
I know it's selfish but I look forward to him coming home and returning to our little hunting group once his time in the Marine corp in finished.
Enough with the sappy stuff. Next question for the guys who have been helping. I know he's going to ask Me what scope I suggest once He gets to receive the new rifle. What are Your recommendations?

Nightforce or Leupold would be my two choices. In the nightforce scope I would go with the SHV model which is really affordable and will last a lifetime. I have 3 of them and couldn't be happier. Given the rifle you purchased, I would lean towards the 4-14x56 or 5-20x56 with MOAR reticle. I have two illuminate and one non illuminated and I would not spend the money on the illuminated again. The glass is good enough that illuminated is not necessary in my hunting scenarios. I was and still am, a leupold fan. I own many leupold scopes and love them. For the money of their higher end scopes, I would purchase the nightforce first. :tup: :tup: :tup:

I too have an xbolt 06 that I really love. Left handed hunter, wood stock. I picked up a Zeiss 3x9 Conquest that was on sale the day I bought the rifle. I added a Pelican 1750 case and a Nikon rangefinder and got out of Sportsmans Warehouse for $1650. Had the setup for ten years maybe? Best gun purchase I've made. Shoots like a dream. Still love 30-06, best hunting cartridge ever.I have to admit the .30-06 is an exceptional round. I would love to say that it has never failed me but...…

The Year I won the Washinton hunting lottery and Drew both the Peaches any Bull rifle tag and Peaches cow rifle tag it let Me down. Not the X-bolt, but the model 760. I honestly still have PTSD from it. Seriously
I had a large group of Elk on the other side of a valley at about 360 yards and could not connect. I shot 7 rounds stopping because I saw what I thought was the bull I had been targeting go down. It had dropped over a small ledge into the brush instead. I spent the next two days of that OIL (in My opinion) tag searching for blood gridding the entire area with My Dad. only to find that I had not connected. Now I would like to blame the gun or My shooting skills but My father was laying on the ground 10 feet to my right with the same tag shooting at a bull 70 yards to the right of the giant I was trying to kill. He was also shooting a .30-06 in a bolt action Winchester model 70? not 100% sure on the rifle model as He purchased it just for this special hunt and it has never come out of the gun safe since.
He is a very good shot in My opinion as I feel I am. two days searching and same result Zero bulls hit. Both of us are long time bow hunters so tracking animals and blood I would consider us both to be experts. Zero blood. as an additional note I ranged the distance later in the week and 360 was the number. A very nice hunting guide that We spoke to about the experience said that thermals when shooting across a valley like that can throw off your shot by quite a bit. I have no idea if His intent was to make us feel better or if there is any truth to the statement but I still wonder today if I was carrying a 7mm rem mag could it have made the difference.
ok to wrap up this long long (sorry) story. neither of us punched our tags that hunt (11 days?), at the time I went home completely discussed with Myself (even though I hunted HARD the entire time), years later I look back at it as one of My fondest memories with My Dad. Me and Dad getting up for 11 days strait going to work together spending the entire day together hunting like We did when I was 12. It's a priceless memory and I wouldn't change it for the world. I had a few other opportunities during the hunt but My bow instincts took over a bit and I would try to close the gap as apposed to take a longer shot like We had done earlier.
My uncle and grand father have used the 7mm rem mag for longer than I have been alive. long shots and dropped many an elk.

If you can't connect at 360 yards with a 30-06, it's almost certain that a 7 mm rem mag would have missed as well. Not a whole lot of difference at that range. :twocents: :twocents:I wonder if this is ballisticly factual or just common opinion?

How much does cross wind affect the same bullet?
I hate to be a hater here, but the miss was on you not having enough rounds at that distance, in varying conditions, with that caliber. I use 06, and regularly punch black on standard rifle targets round after round after round at 400yds. The 06 was used as the primary sniper round for ~75 years in the military first with the Springfield, and then with the M70 Winchester. Only reason I put this out there, is to encourage folks to get to out and practice, in lots of conditions with the same rifle, over and over. your story is a good lesson as to why.
That said, most important part is that these years later you have the awesome memory of getting out with your dad and going hard for 11 days. That's really what it's all about. Relish the memory.

I think He's really going to like his gift based on the fact We have been talking about how He wants to get a new hunting rifle when He gets out and is home for good. He has mentioned the 7mm mag more than once so that's a good sign. no scary stories or anything for that matter. Just says he was someplace that is real sandy and hot as you can possibly imagine.
Stupid mother in law asks him if anyone didn't make it back from his team within the first 3 hours of him being home. :dunno:
He says there is nothing to talk about and to leave it be.
I figure if He wants to talk about it He knows very well that I'm here and ready to listen. I see no reason to bring it up or push him to talk about it.
I've been focused on talking about fun stuff like hunting, the Seahawks, girls, and guns.
Lots of talk about his future plans and that He's going to be home for good next October.
I told him to let Me know when He knows for sure and I will put all those points I have been buying him after something special.
He seems very excited about us giving Bear hunting a try. Says He will need a new rifle :chuckle:.
I'll keep you guys updated on how the gift delivery goes. I'm pretty excited to hand it over and see his face. should be a memorable moment.
