I'm looking at a boat with a 2009 Honda 135 and a 2009 Honda 8 kicker. The main motor has 240 hours, and the kicker has 10.
I've heard good things about Honda, but have no first hand experience, and don't know if there are certain years/ models to look for or stay away from. I'm also a little concerned with only 10 hours in ten years on the kicker. Is this a concern? Hopefully he used ethanol free gas, or Sta-Bill. Any advise, concerns, or things to look out for would be appreciated.

Id check the fuel filter and fuel water separator, if the guy used ethanol gas Id avoid them
I had a 22ft Hewes with honda 150 and honda 8hp and loved them but I used Cenex ethanol free gas and had no issues

Honda outboard motors are bulletproof. They are also heavy compared to their competitors today. Just make sure you test run the boat with your normal expected payload before you buy so you know it has adequate power.

If the kicker sat with ethanol for a long time you will know it right away. Even if so, I haven't had any problem after a carb rebuild, cleaning and worst case replacing a few feet of fuel line.
I haven't owned a Honda, but they have a reputation for reliability, cost and weight.

I would ask that question on the Honda forum below. They are some real experts and can let you know what to avoid.

Honda makes good bikes, gen sets, lawn mowers and cars...not so much boat engines. Lots of cooling and oil issues. A ton of recalls a never a fix.
Yamaha is so much better with outboards they are not even comparable.
I think someone added the hour meter late or the kicker and main hour meters are swapped. 10 hours on a kicker in Salmon country is a read flag. A shop can hook them up to a computer and tell you the exact hour useage and if it has thrown any codes. Might be worth the 2 hours of labor before throwing a ton of money in on what could be someone else headache.

Love my Honda kicker, had a carb problem once from sitting[My bad] I put a new carb runs great,I put a lot of hrs on it,seafoam and run the fuel out after each use, service yearly

My two Hondas have been bullet proof. My main is an 09 90hp and kicker 2010 8hp. Neither have given me one problem.

Only Honda common issue is the powerpacks go out. Most everyone i know w Honda carries a spare. Easy change 70miles off shore just dont drop a nut.

Since the fuel has been covered. I would change out the impeller/water pump. Granted not many hours on it. Sitting for so long it might dry out and become weak. Very easy and cheap to replace :twocents:

Ran across another boat and jumped on it. Also has a Honda 150 and Honda 9.9 with about the same hours, but a lot newer. 2015Hewescraft 210 Searunner. I guess I better get busy building a shop!

Thanks. I’m pretty excited.

Congrats AP, that's a sweet ride!
No carpet, I presume? Probably better, considering the local dock's typical condition...
