Title: Another one bites the dust
Post by: Bango skank on December 22, 2019, 07:58:39 AM
Decided to take a break from the bobcat thing today and take the .243 out for yotes.  Tried out a new ( to me anyway ) calling technique and it worked like. Charm.  First attempt of the day, about 3 minutes, perfect shot.  61 yards.

Im having pelts tanned from this one and the last, just to keep for myself.  They both have such perfect prime coats.  Not shooting dogs to pay for gas money, and i just cant leave such good quality fur on the mountain.

What load did you use in the 243? At 61 yards, I would expect a narly exit.

el cheapo 95 grain federal fusion factory ammo.  I circled in this pic where the exit hole is.  Amazingly minimal pelt damage, cant even see the hole.  Last yote i shot was about 50 yards, same deal.  My lion a couple weeks ago was more significant, and was a 5 yard shot through brush.  Maybe the brush made the bullet tumble?  I dont kno, but that cats liver was outside its body clinging to some visceral fat.  Still it wasnt too terrible, my taxi has fixed way worse.  Like the yote i neck shot with a .308 a couple years ago.   :chuckle:  he made a nice rug for me out of that one, and youd never know i damn near decapitated it.

Yeah, i just dont see myself shooting any other ammo in this rifle.  Its proven to be surprisingly easy on pelts and i get 1/2" groups all day off a bench at 100 yards, and that with a 2-7x33 scope.  Why mess with what works?

I try to be.   i walk away from a calling session empty handed far, far more often than not.  What i may lack in skill, i try to make up for in persistence.

Oh its nothing secret, lots of people do it, its just something i e never tried before.  Using coyote vocals only.  Ive had a couple nice open reed howlers sitting around for a couple years (the one i used is in the pic next to the dogs face) but ive never actually used them.  I guess i just didnt feel confident that i could make the right noise, or even use an open reed call well at all.  But i decided i needed to try it out, so the night before i went out i practiced with the howler in my house, then practiced some more in my truck on the way up there.
I got there and sat in my truck waiting maybe 45 minutes for enough daylight to walk without tripping, and when i got out of my truck to put on my coat and load my rifle i heard sond howling a little ways off on the other side of a creek.  So i snuck across the creek and found a perfect spot to set up. i made 1 howl then just set the call down and waited.  Id say it was only a max of 3 minutes (i forgot to look at my watch to time it) but probably less when the yote popped up over a little terrain feature about 80 yards away, trotting in looking for me.  First time ive ever tried to call one in that way, and i nailed it.  Got skunked the rest of the day though.

Sometimes quantity over quality works!
