A few years ago, my father-in-law called me and told me that his buddy just finished an elk hunt in CO (I used to live there and I've hunted there). His buddy shot a nice bull one evening and it was in a steep canyon. He went back to camp. Him and his buddies decided to wait and go get it first thing in the morning. They got to it first thing in the morning but wolves had eaten the whole elk and nothing was left but bones.
