Title: Information on where to hunt ground squirrels.
Post by: fowl smacker on February 02, 2020, 02:21:19 PM
Hey guys, looking for a place to bring my girls (ages 12, 9) to shoot some ground squirrels/prairie dogs.  I don't mind paying a little bit, but not looking to spend a bucket load on shooting varmints.  I found some commercial places online that wanted $700 a shooter for a weekend, LOL!  That's not what we're looking for.  Any help is appreciated.   Thanks!

Up here we have the Colombian ground squirrel(believe that’s the name) so come on over to ferry county in about June or so and we’ll go kill some. I think our best day was 150 squirrels. They’re up in the mountains though so it is a bit of walking old logging roads and such not like prairie dog shooting. 100% free and all on forest service or our free to use Hancock land.

Burns/Crane Oregon has multiple different sage rat guide services and is one of the better areas for good shooting.  Unfortunately, like many things, it has become a business so the vast majority of land gets tired up and rented by the different guides.  If you're looking for somewhere to go so you can do your own thing, best of luck to you because unless you already have somewhere to shoot, it's tough to find places and the ones you may find, probably won't have that great of shooting.

I've shot sage rats in Crane with No Off Season, a few times.  Tim provides a good service and the sage rat shooting is generally pretty good, although, it seems like there are a few less rats every year.  I haven't been for a couple years so I'm not sure what it's like now.

We went to Crane a few years ago, without a clue as to who to ask, or where to go.  Went to the feed store, and they sent us to the cafe.  The owner made a couple calls for us, and got us some fields to shoot.  Needless to say...we bought every meal at his cafe in appreciation.  His fields had been shot quite a bit, so it wasn't the most active shooting I've seen, but beggars can't be choosers!
